Please build the i5 bridge already. How much wasted money coming up with ideas and having conversations about it. Just get it done! Never seen a project take so long to get off the ground.
From one that grew up in the mid willamette valley; When they put I-5 through, we lost connectivity on several roads that now you have to detour 2 or more miles out of your way to get to the same road on the other side of the freeway. So for Washington to lose an intersection or two and Oregon one, oh well, people will get used to it and adjust their access to the freeway. There is not an endless supply of money. But then Oregon seems to think so with their not so great idea of tolling I-5 through Portland. We are going to be captive drivers as there is not another similar route. I occasionally need to go to the VA medical center and with what they are proposing there will be no way of getting there without paying the toll. There will still be the idiot drivers through the Terwilliger curves, both smaller vehicles and large trucks that cannot seem to stay in their lane because they are doing well over 50 MPH.
Backing up your strong opinions and turning them into reality requires financial backing, and thus far WA hasn't been willing, so minor inconveniences such as automated tolling will have be gotten used to if this will ever work.
@@funnyfarm5555 the Terwilliger curves are a whole bunch better than they used to be. Believe it or not, they are now wider and straighter than they were in the past. And they can carry a bit more traffic. But it’s still a fairly steep, curvy and hindered visibility stretch of freeway. However, the current I-5 Columbia bridge design proposal is still a terrible design and configuration tolls or no tolls. And idiot drivers are still abundant with no extinction threat to their population. They keep making more of them.
That Hood river bridge needed this. I have driven across in the day and REALLY late in the dark. So, any improvements would be welcome. Portland... sigh... ;)
The toll on the Hood River Bridge will go towards paying the cost? Is that why they continued charging a toll LONG after the old bridge was paid for? And why is it that of the thirty plus bridges over the Columbia River in the US the only two (as far as I know) with tolls are in my fair home of Hood River County? Its a rather transparent racket, but one that people have come to accept since its been happening for so long. The other bridges seem to find ways to fund maintenance/repairs...
Refusing to spend to rightsize the freeways a generation ago is why the traffic congestion is so bad on rhem now. Don’t make the same mistakes on the new interstate bridge.
In 2023, China built approximately 46,100 new road bridges, bringing the total to nearly 1.08 million road bridges by the end of the year. Here we struggle to make 1.
Uh, no. That bridge is for freight, not transit. Functionally two totally different incompatible critters. I would find installing the rail transit bridge near by an acceptable configuration. The rail bridge also is in need of a big update. Vancouver is a huge choke point for rail traffic moving in and out of Washington.
The light rail line should be combined with the bus lane, but it doesn't have to be installed initially, merely anticipated. Then Vancouver can get it when they are ready.
How much of that is Washington paying for? After its all said done its still going to be a bottle neck crossing back and forth. Perfect example, the redesign of the I-5 curves in Tacoma. I'd bet these engineers and city planners would have a different attitude if they had to foot the bill for rework if their ideas didn't work as they claimed. Must be nice to experiment with other folks money.
You mean the construction project that NEVER ends ?? They have been messing with Tacoma for years and I don't see any improvement. But, the I-5 bridge needs to be built and the peeps in Olympia and Salem need to get off their arse and get it done already !
Gonna jam the public with a toll to pay for it, why not make up a supersized wish list. Are mass transit passengers going to pay a toll, or is this going to be a sweet gigantic expansion of local mass transit that everyone else gets to pay for? How much of this travesty is Olympia going to pitch in? Didn't Oregon do all the necessary pre-prep years ago just to wind up shelving the project because Washington didn't like the size of their share? Is there going to be any assurance that any of this is going to get traffic across the river any faster? 205 backs up all the way past Oregon city going north on weekdays because of the stupid that happens at the north end of the Glen Jackson where sr14 turns that freeway into a 15 mile long parking lot. That new bridge didn't do any good for Oregon traffic. Beyond the current bridge not falling into the river, I'm struggling to find the upside here. .
Looking at this bridge plan brings out a giant NO! This configuration is the worst of all configurations proposed so far. Resurrect the Portland river freeway and the Seattle Alaskan way viaduct in Vancouver? Want a talk about ugly, expensive and non functional? Both are here in full eye and wallet searing display. At the end of the day you get a $25 billion, that’s billion with a big B bridge that’s a total eyesore and does not do one thing to improve actual traffic flow but brings an electric rail transit choo choo train across the river. And at the end of the day say good bye to the historic Vancouver airport and Fort Vancouver stockade at the same time along with a number of the remaining historical features of the fort. While you’re at it, tear up the revitalized down town Vancouver city center community. And we are still stuck with only 3 traffic lanes and only a bus lane plus Hayden Island gets cut off with a totally limited access design. This is totally terrible.
haa ha this is all about attempting to convince the public that its ok that some mega gog puts that over paid project fundage in there pockets....lol. yea! yea! makes perfect scents,,,lol

I want light rail to Vancouver, and as the man said: Fed money (2 billion ) is conditioned to having it

We need a third bridge first! Troutdale to east Vancouver.
Soft soils and water depth play a major role in foundation design. Which are a significant cost of bridges.
That Hood river bridge needed this. I have driven across in the day and REALLY late in the dark. So, any improvements would be welcome. Portland... sigh... ;)
This bridge will never be built, engineers, and planners. Need to get a grip and realize we need a tunnel not a bridge.
Ever heard of an "Earthquake"?

are these the same people that complain we need more roads, now are complaing about building more roads
The FACT is that the last improvement that they did was building the Glen Jackson Bridge completed 1982 and they have done NOTHING since.
Got to remember. There's a lot more kickback to the politicians in the Portland bridge. That explains at least 2 billion of it

If it cost that much, there better not be any tolls to cross. The train companies should pay for their own tracks
they do
So, 6 Billion + 1, carry the 3... 15 Billion! Voila!
dont forget the tolls!!
Too short ... a TikTok would have conveyed the info provided here.
Why build light rail as an add on? I see a railroad bridge already exists just down the river... use that.

it at full cap

@@eric_d4073 Good luck.
The bridge sucks as it is now. The onramps and offramps on either end are way too short for modern freeway behavior. Take it from a trucker.
It’s also because they want to shove light rail over it!!
LRT transit reduces traffic overall it makes a more sustainable transportation sector watch the whole video than it will explain why thy are doing it

.
And nobody in Vancouver wants light rail. We've spoken over and over and over. But do they listen?
And people in Portland don't want to pay for a bridge without light rail.
All the money in the world?
Crony capitalism.
I say ditch the car lanes and build the light rail.
Your idea is not helpful.

This I 5 bridge is going to destroy the economy of both Portland and Vancouver. The choke point is pretty serious! Put in a fairy
You think she can wave her magic wand to fix this?
