I hope we see him in Psychonauts 2 because it's clear he hitched a ride on the plane as they were escapeing so chances are this isn't the last time we're going to see Dr. Loboto, I actualy want to see him regain his psychic powers as it's clear he was a naturaly gifted even as a baby and maybe as his mind heals from the mental scars his powers may return too.

The kid has a unique talent for something that the parents don't like. The kid wants to develop that talent whereas the parents want to supress it so the kid can work on something they consider more useful. Often ending in extremes and no one is happier for it.
The way this presents it is that Psychic abilities come from a mutation in the brain that can actively be removed or worse, damaged. So not only is Loboto’s brain exposed under his cap but it’s been mutilated as well.
That imagery of the stuffed animal's heads opening and fluff spilling out is so dark and powerful! I don't remember them outright saying his parents forced him to get a lobotomy, at least not in Rhombus, but that imagery alone is powerful enough to tell Raz and the player. In short, that part made me realize that I wish VR allowed you to hug characters...
It's cool that Dr Loboto returned in this game. He was an awesome villain in the first game. Shame I can't really see myself playing this game. I'm not into that VR stuff.
It's a blast if you have VR, but legit one playthrough is all you need. I often tell people to just watch a no-commentary since as a hardcore fan even I can bearely justify the short gametime and price tag. But I'm a Tim Scafer simp so I will always throw money at DF.
A detail that blows my mind is that unless he’s remembering something, Loboto is NEVER inside his house. He’s always outside looking in the house, that has obstacles that blocked off the memories in some way. So not only did Loboto block out those memories, he never actually felt at home here, he was extremely uncomfortable, so much so that he doesn’t want to be in that house even in his own mind. These games are so COOL!!
Notice how all of the viewpoints inside the dollhouse are hiding from his parents, excluding the crib where he had no choice. He never felt safe in his own home.
Reminds me of that one line from the Constantine movie. "My parents were normal. and, they did what any normal parents would do..They made it *WORSE.* "
I never realized this before, but the ship's design is based on his house. You can see the red paint and flower patterns, the picket fence, and the pointed roof with the same tiles. The windows also have slats and the pedestal for the compass looks like a doorknob. I wonder if the bathtub was the only place in Loboto's house where he ever truly felt safe and 'at home.' It would've been the one place where he had complete privacy and where he could just be himself, letting his imagination run free without any judgement. That might explain why he felt so violated by Raz's actions as shown in his second memory vault in the sequel.
There's also the factor to understand that Oleander's mental image of his father is filtered through his own perception. We never actually meet the guy, we only get a vision of him through the trauma he caused his son. With Loboto, what we see is a real and actual memory of what he went through.
Yeah, Oleander's father might have been just insensitive but at least he didn't rejected him as his son. He just wanted to teach him, a lesson in his own way.

But that's exactly the family you need to grow up Raz, the brave guy who just saw the chance of getting his physic education, and took it, and took on any challenge. Yes, he's borne genius, but talent is nothing without character to put it into use, and you sure bound to get it living with this crazy family. Oh, and they allowed him reading True Psychic Tales no matter how much against the idea they were.

2 years late, but i agree. this scene fucked me up the first time i saw it - it got inside my head and i couldn't stop thinking about it for days. i love dr loboto and hope he's redeemed somewhat, or atleast switches sides in the second game, which looks likely.

THE WAY THIS SERIES DOES MENTAL DISORDER IS NOTHING SHORT OF AMAZING. I love psychology, and this is literally one of only two games I didn't skip through the story, the other was more of an interactive novel and I went out of my way to play it, What Remains of Edith Finch. Man that was a great story. Another game that handles mental disorder well. Usually games handle it disgustingly like a Life is Strange.

It’s to prevent people from suffering and being endangered by others. Remember, the game takes place in the 1980s-1990s, a time where racism was at its boiling point, ready to tip with so many riots happening due to racial tension that had built up over the years before. If a race of Psychics was suddenly discovered, the normal masses would go nuts, treating the Psychics as abnormalities and try to ‘fix’ them like what Loboto’s parents did. In this time and age, the world isn’t ready for the knowledge that Psychics exist, hence why the Psychonauts were formed and why they seek out Psychics in secret. Not only to deal with unregistered paranormal activities, but to protect Psychics from the world and train young psychic children how to control their powers. If people are willing to hurt them like what Loboto’s parents did to Lobot just for existing, then the children would be in horrific danger has Whispering Rock not been formed. The world needs Psychics, but they aren’t ready for them just yet.

Pyschonauts, put bluntly, is about mental illness and divergence. Psychics could be a stand in for autism, people who are gifted but lack other things that make someone "normal". There are many organizations and people trying to "cure" (read: torture) them either from ignorance, apathy or straight up malicious intent. Problem is that the negative stereotypes persist longer than positive ones due to media groups and foundations trying to make a quick buck out of the suffering of those they don't understand or refuse to understand.
These two caused the events of both games if it weren’t for them loboto wouldn’t have stolen Truman’s brand or helped Gristol or Oleander so we have them to blame for everything…on the bright side if they hadn’t done anything we wouldn’t have gotten the line “the insanity of a MANATEE!”

I kinda think it's more of a metaphorical thing. Many forms of deformity, mental illness, or other undesirable traits tended to have children treated as if a supernatural force was involved. Myths such as the changelings, devil children, or others believed children were taken in the night and replaced them with their own. Which would justify any cruel action against the child (as they could say it wasn't human). With how the parents treated him it's safe to assume this mentally is something close to what they were thinking (especially how the mother didn't care if the procedure hurts him or not).

I kinda think it's more of a metaphorical thing. Many forms of deformity, mental illness, or other undesirable traits tended to have children treated as if a supernatural force was involved. Myths such as the changelings, devil children, or others believed children were taken in the night and replaced them with their own. Which would justify any cruel action against the child (as they could say it wasn't human). With how the parents treated him it's safe to assume this mentally is something close to what they were thinking (especially how the mother didn't care if the procedure hurts him or not).
