  • Easy to follow video to Mod your ZD30. The swirl mod will keep both air flow valves open on the butterfly. And give maximum oxygen. Notable changes in power. And keeps oil nice and clean even at 5000 km.

    New Zealand. First time watching was a bit confusing but I went bit by bit through a second time as I did the mod and it worked out exactly as you said. One person below also mentioned leaving the brown connector unplugged as well to disable the last butterfly. So I will do that too. Ideally I will take the manifold off and clean up all the intake system, as my engine has done 260,000 in the factory state. Thanks for your help

    Question i just did this thanks to your video tho i am finding it nkw has a slight ringing type nosie of exhuats fumes hitting the plate i use a bjt of stainless steel that was laying around any thoughts

    Exellent video and tips, thanks. Did your fuel consumption improve much after the EGR block and swirl mod? I've just done both to my ZD30 but I did notice that our models here in South Africa doesn't have the 3rd solenoid with black plug on....

      Ok I would just ignore that one if its a blank. The fuel has no great change. Power though is increased allot.

      Thznks Sean. My pick-up is a little bit more responsive but not much. Will check if the CAT is still in. My pick-up does have 374 000km on the odo now and is a 2003 model.

    Thanks for the video mate. Easy to follow. Is the swirl mod essential when blanking egr or will engine run fine with egr blank alone?

      The swirl mod will open up the second port. So you will get two of pure oxygen all the time. Normally the second port opens at so many revs when the egr is activated. I recommend the mod.

    Just a side note. Use a bit of goo on the block plate. There is a slight leak if you dont which really does make a big difference. But like most diesel owners it may drive you crazy knowing its there lol. Again not a must.

      I stumbled across this because my egr pipe broke so i bloked it and done the swirl mod ..absoulutly love it .. i runnin 32s and plenty of power th get them big wheel motivated .. cheers bro

    I ripped the entire egr system out and capped it off at the exhaust manifold. Works much better. And creates a good place for the egt probe

      I've heard it can produce errors. You can buy some block plates with a small hole in it to prevent this. However this kind of defeats the whole purpose. The workaround is to purchase a scan tool (EDS from 4wdsupacentre $70 AUD) and clear the error codes every once in a while.

    I have so much dirt inside engine its unbelievable and no power. Will do what you advised tomorrow and let you know if there is any difference.

    unfortunately thats not actually the swirl mod, thats the egr butterfly mod. the swirl mod is simply unplugging the brownish valve. that stops the swirl valve from working and stops it restricting air flow in the low rpm.
    the vac pipe rearrange is to disable the egr butterfly while still keeping the "anti shudder" valve working. it is required to do if you block the egr, otherwise the egr butterfly reduces air flow which can cause lower effective compression.
    other zd30's like patrol/terrano do not need egr butterfly mod because they do not have it.

      I'm a bit confused. I have a Patrol with a ZD30DI ENGINE I blocked off the EGR and recently I bogs down really bad lots and lots of black smoke no power what's so ever and I mean NO POWER. what do I need to do .please help . Thank you so much..

      the patrol egr and turbo setup is different to the navaras. i suggest asking on the patrol forums.

    I have a Nissan Patrol with a ZD3.0 DI engine and I did the EGR block and it works great!!
    I have a question can I do the swirl to my patrol? My motor seems a little different I have an intercooler on the top of the motor

    Are there different types of zd30?
    Mine has brown and black solenoids only, no green.

      Old comment but yes they are all similar but they vary between the patrol and the navarra and 2007 (in Australia at least) the patrols got a common rail version which the navs didn't as far as I know the CRD version ran better and was more reliable but still not a great engine overall. Pretty sure they started as a Renault truck motor.

    You mentioned you get pure oxygen into the intake after the egr block off. Did you add an oxygen generator somewhere too?

    If you own a ZD30 and expect the engine to last and its done a lot of kilometers then its too late to block off the EGR as the soot is already in the engine, when i rebuilt my ZD30 i had 3, ZD30 engines to look at internally, after my rebuild i found the soot starts as soon as you drive it for the first time, what you have to do is take off the inlet manifold and clean it free of soot, there is no need to carry out the swirl mod because its an old wives tale, i have done 6000 klms since my rebuild which included a new complete head and my engine's oil is clean because the EGR was blocked off from new, there is no issue with the ZD30 heads apart from that they all crack between the valve and glow plugs on all 4, this crack has no effect on reliability of the engine as its just relieving stress in that area, this has been tested and proven by cutting heads up to find out, i work on diesel engine rebuilds my last engine project was a 2010, 4500 John Deere Powertech engine, common rail, cost $7500 in parts and machining, I have had no problems with my engine rebuilds as they are all done with 100% attention to detail.

      actorzone so if your gonna block it later on you best be cleaning it at the same time, or is there no point at all if its not blocked from new?
      Haven't gotten around to doing mine as I thought it was done when I got it, it's at about 260k now. Getting to the inlet manifold is a cunt of a job isn't it?

      He sort of indicated it comes from another source, but really it's all coming from the turbo. It just opens that side of the throttle body and doubles the airflow

    Warning to anyone that does this ….. zd30 is know for heads cracking and either piston 3 or 4 cracking aswell the main cause for this issue is having a EGR block on your d22 causing the back of the block to overheat and warp then leading to blow head or piston

      Can you confirm this or is it just a rumour. I believe this on its own would not cause the overheating required to crack things. More likely it’s due to thrashing the engine, plus poor maintenance and poor cooling. Eg towing heavy loads up hill in a high gear relying too much on torque. If all the mods are done properly, including crankcase breather with a catch can venting to the atmosphere and the egr block, plus a final retune of the engine professionally, the engine will run MUCH cleaner and therefore cooler. A dirty engine is a sick engine
