Hi everyone! 👋 We hope you enjoyed this episode! Don't get hung up on the grits part. They really are tasty but you have to know what to put in them to eat them right. Either way, Americans fight over them. Please Like the video & let us know what you would like to see for Wednesday's episode 😀

I love this Grits thing " you have to know what to put in them" lol. We in Scotland DONT put anything in except water and salt, LOL To be serious, I have a feeling you use another type of oats to us . I do think sometimes its one persons opinion on these vids. I am 74, never been to U.S.A but I know what jaywalking is from europe. You girls take care. Stay safe.

hey girls from a dreich Scotland xx hope you had a lovely birthday Natasha xx i’m sure that Debbie spoiled you rotten xx Look at being 40 this way…. you’ve spent 40 years trudging up this humongous hill but now you’re finally at the top and just about to go over… and it’s a helluva ride down the other side!! i’m going to be in the US when I turn 49 in March and can’t wait xx Anyhoo, you know that the countries of the UK have patron saints, St.George for England, St.David for Wales, St.Patrick for Ireland and, keeping the best for last,St.Andrew for Scotland. St.Andrew’s Day is on 30th November so why not do a video on the various saints of each country? xxx love you guys to bits and,as always, looking forward to seeing your next video xxxx🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

I’ve had ‘elephant ears’ whilst skiing in Canada, but in Canada they’re called ‘beaver tails’. In England / UK, if you ask for a beaver tail, you’ll have a very interesting weekend.

More for Debbie for words that would confuse. If a uk menu would say grilled as in a grilled bacon sandwich. Grilled is a different thing in both countries. Grilled in the UK would be broiled in the USA and broiled is a word that does not exist here. Grilled in USA would mean barbecue in the Uk

So enjoy the next decade to the fullest. I was going to suggest to you Over the Pond as I love Laurence's dry humour. I've been looking for a recipe for cornbread as I'm curious about it. A British supermarket chain, Tesco, briefly issued "Rain-checks" on sold-out sale-lines...this was about ten years back IIRC and soon ceased...but apart from that it's not something I've really come across in the UK...I'd heard the phrase "taking a rain-check", in a somewhat different context, (deferring something to a later date), in various american films though, and was also aware both of the left-pond shopping usage and it's sporting origins...

On a trip to the west coast me and my cousin stopped at an hotel in Santa Barbara. We went down to breakfast there were a number of senior citizens and from thier accents were from the southern states. When one of their companions entered one of the seated ladies called out "Maisy-Jane! Get some of those grits, they're the best I've tasted the whole trip."

With the carhops yea I diddnt think that was a thing anymore like we have drivethroughs but the closest I've seen to a carhop is when the microphones break at the mcdonalds and someone takes your order in person or when they are busy enough that you have to park and wait for someone to bring out your food after you've paid and ordered in the drive through

My Auntie took us to a fish camp when we visited. The Catfish and the Hush Puppys were amazing. The Hush puppy's came in a basket, that they kept replacing with a full one and had a cheese dip. We also had the breakfast biscuits which were amazing with egg and bacon.
The two things I couldn't get onboard with were biscuits and gravy, and grits. The white gravy tasted weird and coming from Scotland we love salty or sweet porridge, but the grits not so much. American barbecue on the other hand was amazing.

In terms of carhops (I have been to a great one in Indiana - but not Gene’s) you have to remember that the US was largely built around the car, whereas Britain’s towns and cities were well established and had to fit the car in - the layout of my town centre is exactly the same as it was almost 1000 years ago - even has the same street names
I’ve never seen a Sonic in Indiana (which is where Lawrence also is) so maybe that’s why he thinks they’re rare?

Yep. Come to Bath if you want to see a city that was designed around the horse, not the car. Visitors from London believed no one else knew what real traffic could be like - until they visited Bath.

So ladies most of my adult life when I hear the word Grits connected to food in the USA I have always assumed like America does with (pork belly slices) Bacon fry the crap out of it I assumed a corn based thing that was fried in a skillet whereas it is actually a porridge Okie Dokie just adjusting the Galactic Translator ;-))

Regarding Jaywalking, pedestrians have right of way in the UK once they have stepped on to the road, hmm.... I think, it is something like that anyway, it is a long time since I read the Highway Code.

Saw a "carhop" at a McDonald's last week when the drive thru was a car park and he was sent out to help clear the queue, not referred to as a rain check but some stores will sell you stuff they haven't got yet and send it to you when it's available

As a 63 year old Brit I knew all these words quite well. Probably due to tv and movie influence. Spent 6 months backpacking across the US - and do think "grits" are disgusting! Personal taste. Syrup on bacon - and breakfast - would be another OMG moment. Would argue with him about "rain check" - I think that is not at all uncommon and heard it, and used it myself for many years. Again - maybe it came with movies etc. Pretty sure we have more words in common use that would baffle most Americans - mainly due to the condensed regional variations.

I grew up in California from 1953-1973; now back in England.
    (1) elephant ear - never heard of.
    (2) grits - heard of, never tried - associate with the south
    (3) butte - didn't know that one
    (4) s'mores - never heard of whilst in America
    (5) carhop - I thought they died out in the distant past - never seen a place using them
    (6) jaywalking - this one I do know!
    (7) raincheck - heard of, but not when shops run out of "on sale" stock
    (8) hushpuppies - only recently encountered the word (other than shoes) - never tasted

In the UK we call a weed wacker a strimmer. I like grits & grape nuts but the first time I tried grape nuts I didn't realise that they seem to procreate in the bowl. Took me ages to finish them & then couldn't walk for an hour.

I tried grits when I visited Georgia in the early 2000s. Ugh... never again... I can't believe they're actually considered as food! Don't get me wrong though; in general I think the cuisine of the southern USA is absolutely delicious. Grits were literally the only thing I tried which didn't work for my taste buds. :)

Been there done that, got the tee shirt. Had them recommend to me. Unfortunately without the instructions on how they should be dressed in the dish. Had them plain. The waitress was impressed and asked if I enjoyed them? I was going to say Very American but went with Very Southern. See literally cooed with pride
