Coolgardie - Western Australia

The Coolgardie of today is a pleasant inland town, which has retained many aspects of its rich and colourful past.
The Shire of Coolgardie has a population of approximately 5,000 people and encompasses an area of 30,400 square kilometres, incorporating four townships namely, Coolgardie, Kambalda, Kambalda West and Widgiemooltha.
The township of Coolgardie is situated 558 kilometres from Perth and 38 kilometres from Kalgoorlie. The townsites of Kambalda and Kambalda West are situated approximately 640 kilometres from Perth and 50 kilometres from Kalgoorlie.
The local industries within the Shire of Coolgardie consist of Gold Mining, Nickel Mining, Pastoral, Tourism, Commercial/Retail and Light Industrial.
Coolgardie's real attraction today is to give visitors an insight into early pioneering life. The many heritage listed buildings combined with a well signposted heritage walk around the town make it one of the 'must see' places in the goldfields.

Another one of those little towns with an amazing story that most people just drive through without stopping. Use to be an old bloke in town that did tours of the town and cemetery as well. Some interesting stories in there.

What does "water was more expensive than gold" actually mean? Do you mean weight-for-weight so that 1 litre of water was costing more than 1kg of gold? I find that hard to believe.

It depended on the scarcity of water during the dry months. It has to be remembered that in the early days of the goldfields, gold was relatively plentiful but water (drinkable water) was very hard to come by. Water was mostly obtained with condensers, the condensers needed vast quantities of timber and the timber was brought in by bulding rail lines out in to the woodlands. Alluvial gold was picked up on the surface and was relatively easy to obtain to begin with and so was not anywhere near as valuable as it is today. While I can't give you exact dollars and cents values for each, the historic literature often claims that water could sometimes cost more than gold or at least be as expensive.
