About two months ago, I did the same thing with a few of my rigs! It turns out that my RocHobby Fire Horse (unlicensed Jeep JLU) is really the advertised 1/18 scale. My MN Model MN99S-A (Land Rover D90) is really the advertised 1/12 scale! My SCX24 Chevy C-10 is 24.24th scale (close enough). All of my other rigs are either a bit more off or totally off in scale compared to what's advertised. 🤦‍♂️ Math really is cool when you're figuring things like this out! 🤣🤣🤣

FMS doesn't use off-the-shelf parts for their 1:12 line of vehicles, and of their 3 vehicles, 2 share the same platform ... they can make true-to-scale as they are more into motorised model kits than RCs for this line. As an obnoxiously anally retentive person, the sloppy use of a clearly defined technical term by the RC car community has always been one of my pet peeves. It's like we don't really care what terms mean. 1/10 means "about yeah big!"
It does make a little sense when I imagine it comes out of the racing regulations, where the size if a model is more important than the exact scale to ensure fairness. So you'll end up with 1/6 Minis racing 1/12 Ford Mustangs, all on more or less the same chassis.
When I scratched an AEC Matador on an SCX10 platform, I first calculated the scale, using the overall width of the chassis as a baseline. On a trail truck, the wheel base can be rather easily adjusted to whatever it needs to be. Furthermore, a full size truck like the Matador, with a separate bed, there is quite a range of wheelbases one can use before it starts looking weird.

Full scale trucks exist in many wheelbases and we don't consider our full size trucks to be off scale. I don't know if you can come up with a fits all rule for determining scale from even a ratio of wheel base to track, best that multiple factors go into determining scale. Truly only a 1 to 1 (measure to measure), comparison for each vehicle to it's full size counterpart can determine true scale.

Do your SCX24s have the same body and different wheelbases because one is modified? Or are they two entirely different bodies? Or same body different configuration? 2 door Jeep vs 4 door? I’m basing all of my measurements and explanations on stock and factory configurations in an apples to apples case. I never implied all vehicles have the same wheelbase in real life. I mentioned in the video that wheelbase is only one way and you should find another known measurement and take your average. I think I also said the body has to be proportionally accurate.

@@turksandjerps If I had a rule of thumb for Scale it would come down to Chassis measurements (unmodified) and then determining correct size to scale for the body and wheels, tires, etc. Anything falling outside those parameters would be either over or under "Scale" for that vehicle, i.e.: monster truck tires on a Volkswagen or vice versa, (even this is a bad analogy because Volkswagen tires and Monster truck tire are still both 1:1 in the real world, but I think you'll get the point). Now we are talking strict scale here and applicable mostly to scratch builds or Scaler replicas, as witness by the many variations of "Mini's" to hit the market this year. In the end not every RC is going to be true to scale in all aspects due to the availability of parts, unless like FMS scale is the primary goal. How different MFG's determine the scale of their vehicles will probably remain a mystery.

@@turksandjerps As for the SCX24's the body doesn't determine the scale, and to my point on wheel base, there are 3 ? wheel bases for the SCX24 and all are "24th" scale, changing out the body, wheels, tires doesn't change the base vehicle scale, the chassis does, and everything is either over or under size to the chassis. My Take ✌
