This thing about redefining characters, from the beginning of the video, it is bit twofold in its nature. I do not think they need to be redefined in a traditional sense, main character and villain/antagonist, better say, are excellent poles/opposites and natural way of thinking of humans, bur there are cases/exceptions when story needs different approach to representing characters, not to mention literary fiction and its great opportunities.
Maybe redefining what a protagonist/average Joe can do in modern world. How much Average Joe can be heroic and in what way? Is the time of Greek heroes gone and what is a modern myth, what should it offer?
Can a person have conflict when there is none and what is epic conflict in 21st century and epic journey for young men and women today?
    Brilliant questions, as usual

Well, about Russian literature and their writings in general, history, circumstances, philosophy, and let's call it politics, are so different in Russia and were different in such amount that it is completely unapproachable for average Western reader. I assume Gogol's play about a fraudster who comes in small Russian village and a book about travellings from Pushkin, if someone is willing to read about stealing of wives in villages, and alcholism, are probably the only approachable ones, guaranteed. It took me a while to understand Russian ideas, and I can positively say I could have done something else and better use my time in study German writers, for being more approachable. Russian culture, circumstances, and lifestyle are really different, Asian, nomadic, I can go on and on, but I will not.
What I thought about Dost.work, is completely different from what he wrote and thought about life. He allegedly despised West, so I do not have to read works of man who automatically despised me and my values, I do respect myself. Nor do I have to praise him, he was maybe the darkest writer, due to inevitable suffering, but I do think The Gulag archipelag is similar, if not overtopped him in depictions of horrors, if that is something a human being should compete about. About his geniosity, I do not dispute his skills, however some of his solutions are definitely not the best, some are really naive, some parts are overwritten, due to fashion of the time, but still are, he found no courage to work for less money and care about his readers first, some conclusions do lack philosophical background and there are better psychological portraits than he wrote.
Not to mention the difference between his poverty, experiences in prison and his sufferings in prison and the average life circumstances of average western reader, who will probably never go to prison for expressing his/her opinion.
Russian literature, big skip for me, and I read a lot. Nevermore.

About the ideas behind creating an ahistorical construct such as Third Reich and lots more, French do have great literature on the subject, with a brilliant approach. Surprisingly, but they do.
But there are probably more similar things and more interesting. German militarism from the past cannot be the same and is not equal to a period of time when darkness in Germany prevailed, and regular people got militarised and overwhelmed by evil by cunning techniques and deceptions.

Definitely, awkwardilly different is she, and probably the bestest choice. I do like your choice of characters.

What do you think of a game?
Or, can you imagine that you are in a world, where things you hear, experience, however interesting they may be, are actually not interesting at all? Where aubergines are more interesting than death threats, and where threats from maniacs and hostages or great shopping deals are just a sort of Matrix hook to keep you engaged and force you to continue look into shadows and entertain viewers instead of going out of Truman's show?
A blurb of my possible novel, as a reaction to changed rules of behaviour in certain amount of time. Possible, but still not sure.

I got myself a copy of the Enoch Powell book you shamefully discarded at a book sale next to Southbank Centre on my way from watching a play. One day I will actually read it.

@@DressyCrooner the opening hundred pages on Powell’s bland and studious youth are very enjoyable! From there it gets sticky with all the cabinet meetings and fiscal policy!
