      Dear Cherno,
      although there are more than 15 years of age between us I completly understand your situation. As a father of 3 kids and as the head of development in the machine tool sector I also stand at the point: Where shall I go to job wise. What keeps me going and motivates me. Sometimes I little cut helps to gain more.

      My take is this: make a slight shift over time to see what hits the sweet spot.
      as a start, focus way more on the Hazel engine. since this is the main job.
      make more content about hazel, and make it less edited. just film yourself. make less content that doesn't revolve around hazel.
      over time, change the amount of youtube to non-youtube work you do, but also try to change the amount of youtube-hazel to youtube-other-content work you do.
      I believe you'd find the perfect sweet spot at some point, and youll get more freedom.
      also, make more time to spend with family and friends. no questions. otherwise you'd just reach burnout. we don't want that.

      Dear Cherno, your problem may be how to achieve self-realization. It seems that you have some things that you have to do in the process of self-realization. Then I think, follow your own ideas, you know that sometimes some things cannot have both sides. .Or let them all go to hell when faced with a dilemma. Hahaha

    Statistically there's a lot of TH-camrs that make frequent devlogs, but almost all of them rarely make progress on their projects that isn't superficial. Honestly I think you'd need someone else to make devlogs while you actually focus on developing (ex. Blender & Unreal do this). It's too easy to get distracted with trying to make good content vs actually making progress.

    • @KyleHarrisonRedacted
      @KyleHarrisonRedacted 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      This. Either someone rolling B-roll footage or just hiring a part time video editor.
      Most devs through history aren’t doubling and tripling their work load as a filmmaker, someone else is doing all that work while you make the magic happen

    • @peezieforestem5078
      @peezieforestem5078 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think not spending 100% of time on a single problem area is actually beneficial. I found that the biggest productivity killer for me was focusing exclusively on a single job. I would never take multiple responsibilities, because I thought: "well, if I cannot do this one thing, how can I manage multiple?".
      But it turns out that having multiple things to do actually lets me get a clean look at the problem, and that solves 99% of the problems I'm stuck on, because it's always me forgetting to account for something, or getting overly fixated on some tiny aspect.
      I don't know how applicable this advice is, but I think it's at least worth considering.

    • @GiantSlothGames
      @GiantSlothGames 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Speaking from personal experience here. This is easier said than done. Lately I've had someone else edit my devlogs, but we're starting to realize now that there are serious limits to this. You almost need an editor that is also a gamedev themselves and intimately familiar with the subjects, otherwise the only thing they can add is memes and some generic footage. When I talk about a subject, they often don't have any idea what I'm talking about, so I end up having to 'pre-edit' some explainer stuff in anyway, to the point where I could just as well start editing it myself.
      It still helps a little bit ofc, but I feel like devlogs are probably the hardest videos to outsource editing for, as you need a LOT of domain-specific knowledge to edit them well.
      If I just give you a bunch of footage, then somewhere in the script I mention "oh I also added the ability to generate signed distance fields from meshes so I can blend them into my voxel terrain", the editor is not going to have the slightest clue what I'm talking about. So you end up having to babysit them most of the way through. In the end they save you a *little* bit of time, and cost you a whole lot of money.

    Just small videos with quick tips is very helpful, doesn’t need to be a 10+ part tutorial or even 10min videos. Like, when you’re coding, I assume a lot of us have those realisation moments like “man, this is so much better’ and all the video could be a telling how a 5 row function works compared to before or the common way of solving it.

    I've always liked your content a lot. It's both something I want to watch/listen to.
    Feels to me like you're talking what's on your mind and not planning to "catch the audience with it" which is rare and valuable imho.
    On the other hand there's videos where one can see more effort been put into editing and general composition of the finished video - they turn out great!
    It's probably when you put more time into videos than development I think... I believe core of your audience will stay there for the content which they love.
    TH-cam being a video platform though I think you might want to try and get some help editing, not to change the style but rather lift some weight of your shoulders and to let you focus on the dev side more.

It was daunting to see that what I learned from C was just going to be cast aside because everyone was saying it wasn't "relevant". But you are showing me the relevant practicalities of it. In 2021, I was just graduated from the university, working as a junior software engineer for a company which I hate. I was planning to search for a better job.Just a knowledge to C++ grammar and a few working experience was not enough at all to pass the interviews. Then I found you and your videos about c++ and game engine. From those videos I learnt how to build a project from zero, rather than just writing toy programs like a student. With your videos as reference I learnt more about graphic programming stuff and finally got a better job.
    I saw this video just now and found that you have done so much for your game engine, which is unbelivable and, inspiring because you have insisted on one thing for so long.You have had your tiny team aggregrated by guys with the same interest, and also have had a family, which is so great.
    Keep on sharing programming things, we love it.

    Hello Cherno!
    I've been following you for a while. I can say that you are one of the most talented people I have ever seen in my life. You and your videos inspire me to be a better programmer. It's really hard to find good videos to learn about game engines, C++, and graphics programming at your level of quality. I learned more from your series on C++ and OpenGL than I did in my undergrad. I just want to thank you for your time, I really appreciate it. If you need to take a break, leave the internet, or reduce the amount of videos during the time, I will continue to support you once you return.
    Greetings from Spain.

    As a developer I very much like these "overview / explanation" videos about things that you are working on in Hazel. For example, one of my favorites was the Entity Component System. It was something you've been working on on Hazel, which you then explained the ins-and-outs of and drawing these fine details about memory management and stuff. The code-review series is nice, but if I had to choose, it's those "zooming in on one particular subject" that are very helpful, since they can be applied to other languages as well, rather than just C++.

    Wish I had some great advice to offer. How are your goals, are they clearly defined? How's your progress on achieving them, like...where are you at? I know you're making a game engine, is that the end game, and are you concerned about funding, and/or viability of the engine? Just trying to understand better what you are struggling with, I do hope you find a clear path and motivation to succeed and find encouragement!

    The Cherno: "...there is no more Cherno on the internet..."
    me: Inconceivable!
    As a content creator myself that puts more time in than is financially reasonable, I say its totally ok to optimize your time in regards to ROI. Your content is great. It will continue to be great as long as you're not pumping out meme reaction videos, doing dance move shorts, putting out robo-content, or shrieking your way through play-throughs. One thing that you have going for you is your delivery. You don't have hugely audible breathing, you don't 'um' or 'uh' very much, you don't constantly flub words or say what you don't mean. I spend huge amounts of time editing voice over. It seems like setting a camera up and just talking is totally viable for you as a production process. By shifting a little bit of time to pre-production, you can probably eliminate huge swathes of your post-production and all that combined cut out most of your time in with essentially the same result.

    I think you're honestly doing a good job juggling those 3 jobs you have. Family is the most important one ;)
    With regards to ideas; I feel like there is a lot of different things going on at the moment. Dev logs, game engine series, code reviews, raytracing and other educational videos. To be honest, I like them all, but it would be very understandable if you would cut back on some to focus on others. You can also always come back later to those you cut back on, content for years! I don't know the plans, but maybe something like the raytracing series also has a certain endpoint, where you can wrap it up to have more time for other projects.
    Whatever the choice may be. The most important thing is that you should enjoy it and if that's the case, I don't think any choice can be the wrong one.

    The Cherno can only churn out so much.
    You've provided many a polished video on how to write using C++. When i saw the title i thought, i know what this is about. In short, lack of time. Was i right? Those C++ videos are great they work, now let them see a bit of what it is really like to dev.
    I don't do videos but I've kept a dev diary of a personal project, that only includes simple descriptions of what i did. It was hard enough describing what i had done that day, never mind producing videos of that work. Dev work on a game (or engine) even at it's most enjoyable is/can be hard work, you just do what you can.
    Not exactly similar, but... I recall David Braben (Frontier Developments) when asked about things he may have done differently with Elite:Dangerous. I recall he said something to the effect, he wished we had built up more content and the like before they revealed the game. My words not his but the jist of what he said at the time. The reason... They no longer had the time to produce additional content to show it off, as every effort was now going straight into the game.

    What if you were to join another team and bring your structure / systems to build another product? Ultra Engine is a very viable engine. When people divide you take huge risks and increase the risk of failing. However when people work together, you can increase the odds of success.

    I've been subscribed to you for ages. I don't know when exactly, but before that I watched your how to make a game engine series when it was like, I don't know, a decade ago or more? And i honestly don't spend anytime coding in C++ these days, I'm making my game in Godot and exclusively I'm just coding in C#, but if it wasn't for you I would have given up a decade ago probably. Now I just pop in when you post new videos because you're entertaining, and I enjoy your intelligent reviews and such. I also really like to see where Hazel's at because game engines are also entertaining...for me anyway ha.

He likes to do most of his content on Serenity with interesting coding videos tackling features and bugs as an uncut coding session (e.g his Browser hacking videos that he did recently). I enjoy watching his purely technical vids along with his thought process and I don't mind seeing more raw uncut/unedited content from you

    Honestly videos about Hazel would be pretty cool to see.
    The game engine looks awesome for 3D projects, and even potentially tutorial videos on how to use certain features from the development's POV would be neat.

    You're doing so much already, I have no idea how you managed all this time honestly. It still is beyond me how many game Devs manage to make high quality devlogs about their games, on top of working on the game itself. It's tough. That's it. But I think you've already shown you're more than capable to juggle all of that...I think you just need to try new things and it seems you already set out to do just that. Whatever you'll end up doing I'm quite confident you'll be successful and will soon regain enthusiasm :)

    Hello Cherno, love your videos, and they help me a lot with my profession. Though I am a web developer, I love games and computer science in general, and recently I started diving deeper into math. Your videos are an inspiration, and I can see the love you give into each one of them.
    You probably considered most possibilities on how to deal with this situation, specially since you are already leading a team to leverage the quality of Hazel, and one of the things you probably are already doing is delegating work. This is the key for when there is a major goal.
    Consider training someone not only to improve on achieving the project's major goals, but to take the same responsabilities and visions as you do. Teach them the love and the vision you have. This could also be applied to your channel. Hire an editor to help you out with youtube.
    I hope this stage of your life continues to bring more friends and family together, and that you get to enjoy the results of everyone's hardwork, specially yours.

    Have you considered seeing if someone would like to be a volunteer Agile team lead? That would take a lot of the "directing the team" load off you and let you focus more on the technical heavy lifting. That person might be able to take over some of the devlog as well? (Btw - I have been a heavy consumer myself of your C++, OpenGL, and ImGui videos. So helpful!)
