  • Well you never learn if you don't try new things, and this time it worked out! Mammoth molar and ivory is some of the coolest material for knife handles and i'm glad I figured out how to cut it properly without causing any damage to it or myself!

You should post all your experimental videos that failed. I think we would all live to see them and they would help us see what doesn’t work. Alex Steele posts his mistakes and that’s part of what I like about him

I have that same exact saw for doing tile work before I retired, so that's cool because I want to purchase some mammoth soon, anyhow, thanks!

Interesting video. Mammoth teeth are very hard to work with if not properly stabilized, this material consists of three types of layers which are all different in texture that's why it's so easy to break. The white layer, very similar to quartz in term of texture , is the hardest and most brittle part of the tooth, it is always this layer that causes the breaks and ruin the work. Glad you got some really beautiful slabs out of the big chunk

$130 for that mammoth tooth is actually cheap!!. We've been mining and selling lapidary materials for 22yrs and typically mammoth tooth sells for $1 per gram ( $454 per pound) up to $2 per gram. Just depends on the piece. YOU REALLY NEED TO GET AN ACTUAL DIAMOND LAPIDARY BLADE!! Tile blades will do the trick but the rims are so wide they tend to build up too much heat and sometimes crack your material. Especially tusk and teeth!! Plus with such a wide blade your loosing almost half your material by the time you slab a rough tooth up into slices so an actual lapidary blade is well worth it!!

Do you have a site where you sell your lapidary materials?

I have seen two times guys using a band saw. Not a good idea. This material is very hard and it can crack easy if you drill a hole in it. Since some years if have also a block mammoth tooth but I fear to use it.

It is very fragile material to use. Sharp drill bits and wet saw is key!
