Thank you for this. I toured Belle Meade yesterday, and was left feeling hollow. You helped to flesh out some of the things I wanted to know. I’m increasingly annoyed at how we, as a culture, are enamored by wealth, and what it can buy. The stories of these grand homes are usually told with a focus on how the family gained, maintained, and then lost their wealth. Our docent was an exception, and quite amazing. She brought in so much more to the Belle Meade story, but it has me wanting even more. We stood in the slave’s house, and it was almost more than my sensitive spirit could take.
