    Rob,
Liked your review of "The Uninvited", which was the first classic film of the supernatural. It shouldn't be compared to todays haunted house film with all the modern special effects and gratuitous gore. Plot, direction, production values, and even acting are all that really make a great film, and "The Uninvited" has all of that. You should tell your viewers that if they get a chance to see this film on the big screen at a cinema retrospective,as I did in 1973 at the Nuart Theater in West Los Angeles, they will truly appreciate what a chilling film this was,and still is. Charles Lang Jr.'s black and white cinematography received an Academy Award nomination, and was instrumental in adding to the eerie atmosphere of Windward House, and to the film in general. Loved your analysis of Gail Russell, and the contribution she brought to the character of Stella Meredith. You might be interested to know,as well as other classic movie star fans, that JC Publications has just published my biography of Gail Russell,"Fallen Star". It is now available on Amazon Books, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers. Again thanks for your review on "The Uninvited".

Thanks for your comment and glad you liked the review. It is a shame about Gail Russell. She was attractive and had a nice presence, but I don't think she could cope with fame.

My favorite all time ghost story. The acting was first rate and yes, no gore or bodies or ghosts jumping out. Just a ghost story that grabs your attention. As for Gail Russell, only her 2nd or 3rd film and her first major role. Very shy and had great stage fright which she got over by using alcohol. The beginning of the end, dead at 36 in 1961 from alcoholism.

As much as I loved this movie, for my money the most terrifying ghost movie of all has to be "The Haunting," with Julie Harris. Like "The Uninvited," it NEVER showed even a single ghost, which this film actually did, when they showed the ghostly apparition materialize during the seance scene, if you will recall.

Actually checked this one out earlier this month, thoroughly enjoyed it. As for whether or not it's scary, you do kind of have to make allowances for the time it was made. The ghost effects, which of course are kind of laughable now, probably scared the hell out of people back in the 40's.

I've always liked Ray Milland and one very late night after work years ago I happened to catch this movie on a station out of L.A. I was really surprised when it turned out to be a ghost story. I remember liking it a lot. The clips you played were giving me the chills.

I LOVE this classic B&W thriller, but am I the only one to have watched it four times before I could finally figure out the plot line?? Today, no film would have ever even survived opening night with so many confusing twists and turns. And like you, I thought that Milland was far too old to be the leading man to Gail Russell. Again, today they would have called him a "dirty old man," and thrown him into jail for statutory rape. Still, a classic film well worth watching.

Definitely. Personally, I had no problem following the plot. The book on the other hand was a little harder for me.

You're far smarter than me, I had to watch it a dozen times before I finally got everything straight. Still, a lovely film, especially the theme song, "Stella by Starlight."

Greedy Criterion Collection took it off of a Roku channel I watch.

Kind of ridiculous to call them greedy for doing that

@@123rockfan No it isn't. Some people can't afford to sub to the Criterion Collection channel to watch the movie. They could have struck a deal with the channel to at least put up a link to where the movie could be bought.
