Last year I ordered the 35mm f/1.7 and that was a big mistake. I couldn't get the adapter off and the lens felt so u sure in function. I recently received the 35mm f/1.6 and I love it. Much easier to use. One really needs to watch your videos several times and take notes, because they have so much information. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
Great tips. Personally I like the f1.7 the most for its form factor, focusing/aperture rings placement etc. Judging from its effective focal length I just shoot portraits and shrug off not able to focus to infinity.
I just get a second hand OM-D E-M10 mk2 camera with 40-150 mm . Now I'm looking for a wide angle lens. This video encourages me to hit the purchase button on an online store for this lens. I paid around 17-18 USD included shipping. thanks for all of your review videos.
Having tried all sorts of large cumbersome lenses (Helios 40, Petzval and such) these look great! The key word here is 'fun'. I'm sure none of these lenses are used by crime scene investigators but for an autumn day amongst the thistles they're perfect. I love how M43 gives so many option to experiment. I'd be happy to add one of these to my arsenal of TINY lenses!
Just found this video. The Fujian cctv lens does have a filter thread. It is 30mm. I have one and have used a stepup ring to mount ND filters and a hood.
Hi Rob, saw this and remembered how your into a sensible frugal aspect, there’s a guy on TH-cam who is a lens guru and you’ve probably checked them out, but just in case, the Industar and Jupiter lens, I think they are even cheaper in you neck of the woods, the latest Industar 50 it’s ugly but the results are really good! I have the 25mm Fujian lense. It's my boring light lense, when I'm in the mood to take pictures, but the light is boring and no interesting motives available. But you are the first one except me who likes this look.

Thanks for this video. I have a Fuji APS-C camera, but these lenses will work for any mirrorless camera equally, I think. Finally bit the bullet and got the Fujian F/1.6.. I know.. $30-34, what was I waiting for, right?.. Looking forward to trying this and having some fun. I have and have had many fast 35mm prime lenses, but even the most compact ones are either a relalitvely heft build and size OR not quite faster than F/2. This seems like a great alternative to get probably the most compact 35mm f/1.6 lens with little to lose and so much to gain.
Let me know how this works out on your Fuji. I'll have to try it on my Sony. I've yet to put this lens on anything but m4/3. Enjoy and thanks for watching!
People. This is what happens when when you don't listen carefully. I ordered the 35mm f/1.7, about which, Rob specifically advised to avoid. I can't do anything now, because it's already on it's way. I will try it and if it is not at par with the 25mm f/1.4 (which I already have) then I will order the 35mm f/1.6. The problem with the 25mm f/1.4 (and I believe 35mm 50mm also) is that the maximum focusing distance is limited to a few feet and there is no infinity focus. Nevertheless...it is a great lens and I love shooting headshots and head and shoulders portraits with it.
Your 24mm should focus to infinity! Do you have the tiny extension tubes attached? You should only be using the adapter, not the rings. Otherwise you may have gotten a defective lens.
Hi Rob, I have this lens too. I understand swirly bokeh when I see it, but I still can not tell when photographers say such and such lens has “bad” bokeh right off the bat like it’s clear as day. I’d love for someone to explain what the differences are in spotting what is good vs bad bokeh. I can’t see the difference yet and it makes me kind of sad inside.
I know what you mean. My video on the 50mm lenses compares the bokeh and you might be able to see the subtle differences there. Personally, I like the swirly, bubble, and donut hole bokeh effects. Those are very deliberate.
I think it's the first thing people want to try when they get their first real camera, especially if they're coming off a cell phone or point and shoot.
If I remember correctly, the 35mm f/1.7 didn't focus easily and I felt the bokeh was nicer on the f/1.6. On the f/1.7, the focus ring would "slip" when going back and forth, so it was hard to nail focus. Might be just my copy of the very cheap lens.

Thank you so much for the kind comments! The 25mm you mentioned is probably the exact same lens as the 25mm in this video. It has better swirly bokeh effect than the 35mm. I like the field of view on the 35mm focal length better although it's swirly effect is much more subtle. On the 25mm, just make sure it's the f/1.4.
Great suggestions! I was looking for cheap alternatives to the Lensbaby and got the 25mm f/1.4 CCTV lens you suggested, I am very pleased with the swirly bokeh and the soft focus effect I get with it. I have seen other people suggest the 58mm f/2 Helios-44 along with these, I was wondering if you had any experience working with it?
Don't have the 58mm helios, but have it on my short list of lenses to get. Only thing stopping me is the 58mm focal lenght is a bit long for street. Would probably make a nice portrait lens though. Glad the 25mm is working out for you. I have fun with mine.

You need an extremely fast lens. Try 25mm and 15mm on the kit lens and see which one gives you the composition you want.Then decide if you want manual focus or autofocus. The Mitakon is a manual focus but gives the best bokeh (shallow depth of field). The Panasonic 15mm is autofocus and best for hand holding, the Panasonic 25mm is a nice compromise if you can work at 25mm. The 25mm CCTV lens is a cheap manual focus with good bokeh. Hi, I've a Olympus OM-D E-M1 and from my very old Pentax MG I also have the following lens: - Pentax 1:1.7 50mm -Tokura 1:3.5-4.5 28-70mm and -Tokura 1:4.0-5.6 70-210mm So my answer is, is it possible to use these lens in my Olympus, if yes, how and is it worthy? Thanks
Hi. It's possible to use those lenses. The Pentax you would set the IBIS to 50mm. The Tokura are zoom lenses so I would turn IBIS off. I think the Pentx 50mm will be worth it but not the Tokura zooms.

I just received my new Meike Nikon-F to MFT adapter. I have 2 questions: 1. When using my 50mm Nikkor lens... should I enter 50mm as the lens's focal length, while manually calibrating the IBIS for it or multiply it by 2 i.e 100mm? 2. Will the vibration control of my Tamron (for Nikon) lens work, when mounted on my Olympus O-MD EM10 II with the adapter? Thanks a lot for your time and effort. 1. Set the ibis to 50mm. Always use the focal length of the lens, not the equivalent. 2. The vc on any non-native lens will not work. I should have some time now to get back to making videos. I had a rough couple of months this summer.
@@RobTrek Thanks a lot. Just played with my Nikkor 50mm and my Tamron 90mm VC attached to my Olympus O-MD EM10 II via the adapter. I am loving it. With the magnify feature in Olympus...manual focus is a charm.
Today I received the 25mm - I liked it's effect better than of 35mm, at least on your photos. I put it on my Olympus pen, then the olympus omd em1, but nothing is happening. It seems that the adapters fit alright but no view and the shutter button would not press. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?🤔
Most likely the lock pin on the camera mount is still depressed and you need to turn the lens more until you hear it click. Turn the lens adapter, don't turn the lens by it's barrel as you might twist it too much.
Usually, the problem is the rear element is not close enough to the sensor. Try to screw the lens in tighter into the lens adapter. If you have another c mount adapter, try that. Otherwise, you may have to try an exchange with Amazon. I've bought two of them and don't have any problem, but the build quality questionable, so it doesn't surprise me. Let me know how it works out!
Thanks for your reply. Tried it out. Not working... Since I m living in Switzerland, sending it back to Las Vegas is kind of too much of an effort for the price I payed. Seems to work for portraits though. Will still play a bit with it.

Thanks! I'm sure you'll enjoy those lenses. I would avoid old zoom lenses with very few exceptions. The biggest problems are they generally suck and tuning the stabilization. You can only set stabilization to a specific focal length, and zooms cover a large range. If you turn the stabilization off and go old school techniques (focal length x 2 shutter speed), then okay. But then you have to be in really good light because you'll be at f/5.6 or higher with a shutter speed at 1/400+. I'm going to do a video on some prime telephotos soon (after I finish my taxes). The Olympus 40-150mm for $100 is excellent and lightweight. I'd get that over any old school zoom. For telephoto primes, the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AIS $100, Nikkor 200mm f/4 AIS $100, and the bargain Minolta 135mm f/3.5 $40. Also, any of the Vivitar Series 1 lenses are nice. If you can find a Vivitar made by Cosina, even better. I'll get into that in another video. I've just had so much on my plate this month, no time to make any new videos.
Sorry for another question. Actually I watch your videos several times and every time I learn something new. I shot the moon with my Tamron 18-400mm VC at 400mm adapted to my Olympus O-MD EM10 II and while manually focusing on it through the LCD...it showed horrible ghosting and flare, but the final image didn't have any ghosting or flare. What can be the reason for that? BTW...I had the lens hood on it. I always do...on all my lenses. Thank you very much for your time and effort. P.S. I am patiently looking forward to your tutorials for the video features of the Olympus cameras, specifically for the Olympus O-MD EM10 II.
Only thing I can think of is either the camera is correcting the issue in jpg or the software you are using is correcting for this. Are the raw files looking okay too? Another reason could be the live view is operating at a different aperture and shutter speed than how you've set the camera. Try programming a button for preview and then see if you still get ghosting/flaring when in preview mode. Let me know. THanks!
@@RobTrek The RAW files came out really nice and I am very happy with the result. The camera LCD and the EVF...both showed severe ghosting...as if showing two moons...both as blobs of light...with no definition at all. Only after magnifying the image for manual focus... everything was sharp and clear.
I'm gonna try and do some moon shots and astro this winter. I've had good success with my Nikon d750 and 20mm f/1.8. Curious how my Olympus gear will do.

It's tough to find a vintage wide fast lens. I don't have the 12mm f/2.0 rokinon, but have heard great things about it. Check out th-cam.com/video/SdpeV86yuFo/w-d-xo.html He has a laid-back style like me so you might like that video over others.
Hello, I was wondering about the crop ratio when these lens are mounted. The Micro 4/3 system has a crop factor of x2 when it comes to full frame, will it be the same with these lens?

I always recommend a lens hood. An ND filter is used for cutting light so you can shoot at slower shutter speeds or lower apertures. Lens hoods help reduce glare and increase contrats.
Thank you Rob ! I just bought a Mondpalast CCTV lens on EBay for my OM10 Mk2, but I cant focus on a distance larger than maybe 60 centimeters... So the lens is useless... They offered me 10€ back but I'd really like to make it work... Is there any tip out there for helping a poor photographer with this cute but useless lens ? Lens adaptater issue ? If it's the 35mm 1.7, that is the one lens I don't recommend. The quality control and/or design is very poor. You might want to try screwing the lens in tighter to the mount so that the rear lens element is closer to the sensor. Infinity focus is lost when the rear lens element is just a hair too far away. Try a different adapter if you have one, it may let the lens screw in a bit closer. Other than that, it will probably never work.

Sorry, the feature is not available on the em10, or em5. em1 and PenF has it. You can add it back in Lightroom using a plugin called Lenstagger. Thank you for your question!
Thanks. That lens didn't give the same swirly bokeh effect and was difficult to focus due the focus ring being sloppy. I would turn it one way, then back the other way, but it wouldn't change focus until I overshot the last stop. I never use now. Might be just my copy, as quality control is non existent.

I love your intro with the fujian 35mm and the 37mm silver lenshood. I've looking everywhere to find that silver 37mm lenshood but I can't find it. Do you know were can I find it?
My update (if anyone is interested)...I just received the Fujinon 35mm f/1.7 lens and now I understand why Rob advised to avoid this one and go for the 35mm f/1.6 ONLY. The adapter wouldn't come off and the build quality is one of the poorest, I have ever seen. Two really long extension tubes were also included, which I didn't really care about. Undoubtedly...It is the worst lens, which I have ever used and I own many lenses from several brands. So...I am going to order the 2nd one now. Let's hope this one turns out good enough. Thanks Rob
Thanks. let me know how it works out. these lenses are very cheap, so I get reports of bad copies time to time. I've ordered two. My first one worked great. Some screws came loose and it fell apart. Totally my fault, I should have tightened them when I had the chance.
Dear Rob, I have received exactly the lenses you suggest from the same eBay vendors, with adaptors that fit the bayonet mount of my OMD E-M10 Mkii. I have, however, failed to mount the adapted lenses as, having attached the adaptor first to the camera body, then slowly and gently screwing the lenses into the adaptor thread (for safety reasons), the the rear of the lenses' screw mounts seems to protrude a fraction of an inch beyond the back of the bayonet adaptor resulting in a rather loose fit. I am also not getting any image at all (i.e., black viewfinder/rear screen, even when the camera is set to manual and I move through all aperture settings. I should point out that the camera has been set up for rear button focusing. Do you have any suggestions, as I'd love to try the bokeh effects? Many thanks!
I prefer to screw the mount onto the lens before mounting to the camera. If the fitting is a little loose, you can put a try a thin peace of plumbers tape on the threads to add some friction. As far as the balck screen, that would imply that you haven't turned the lens mount all the way to the locking position. There is a little pin that protrudes from the camera that sticks out through a hole to lock the lens into place. Please keep me posted!
Dear Rob, Many thanks for your very swift and full reply to my enquiry. I did, initially, attach the adaptor to each of the lenses, in turn, first but on trying to attach the adaptor bayonet to the camera, was unable easily to couple the two and noticed the slightly protruding end of the lenses' screw threads at the back of the adaptor plate. This prompted me to 'play it safe' and instead mount the adaptor first to the camera. The adaptor did then engage fully and snugly with the body seating, clicking into place and depressing the pin. I have tried both the recommended lenses but each is a rather loose fit to two supplied adaptor plates, as I'm afraid to force the screw threads. In both cases, there is no image despite the lens mount engagement pin being depressed and the lenses being reasonably tightly screwed in. Frankly, I am mystified, as the immediate substitution of a 4/3 lens, without any resetting of the camera, returns imaging to normal!
Dear Rob, 'Apologies for the post below. I've now been a bit more brave, firmly screwing the lenses into their adaptors as a first step and then persevering with the coupling of the adaptor to the camera and -- success! I'm not really sure what I've done this time that I failed to do before, apart (possibly) from not rotating the adaptor fully into the camera body, despite thinking I'd done so. Images are now appearing as expected for both lenses. Very many thanks again!
I got swirly bokeh with my full frame camera using duct tape. I'll do a quick vide on it with pictures. However, you can search youtube and find others who have done this.
mitsumika look for Mathieu stern. flippijg Front elements or using enlarger lenses can do. a bit diy Theres. and yeah helios 44 has nice swirl and is cheap

You can also slap Helios on a speedbooster, or use the TTArtisans 25mm which apparently has swirly bokeh.

The full swirly bokeh effect makes me queasy! However I do love the vintage look with the soft edges; for such a low price I'm very tempted!
The 35mm is not as swirly as the 25mm. I think it's quite nice.

Thanks. True, it really is more of a close to medium distance focal length. Nobody would probably shoot landscapes with it.

I used to have a Nikon 1 and used the lens with its C mount. worked well and was fun. I will have to get an adapter for m4/3.

[one question; I see that there is also now a 25mm little brother to the 35mm (the one with the silver hood) you've shown: "Pixco Mini 25mm F1.8 APS-C Television TV Lens CCTV Lens for 16mm C Mount Camera"... would you still recommend the 35mm that you show in the video or would the 25mm version of it be a better focal length?]
Thank you so much for the kind comments! The 25mm you mentioned is probably the exact same lens as the 25mm in this video. It has better swirly bokeh effect than the 35mm. I like the field of view on the 35mm focal length better although it's swirly effect is much more subtle. On the 25mm, just make sure it's the f/1.4.

I was looking for cheap alternatives to the Lensbaby and got the 25mm f/1.4 CCTV lens you suggested, I am very pleased with the swirly bokeh and the soft focus effect I get with it. I have seen other people suggest the 58mm f/2 Helios-44 along with these, I was wondering if you had any experience working with it?
Don't have the 58mm helios, but have it on my short list of lenses to get. Only thing stopping me is the 58mm focal lenght is a bit long for street. Would probably make a nice portrait lens though. Glad the 25mm is working out for you. I have fun with mine.

You need an extremely fast lens. Try 25mm and 15mm on the kit lens and see which one gives you the composition you want.Then decide if you want manual focus or autofocus. The Mitakon is a manual focus but gives the best bokeh (shallow depth of field). The Panasonic 15mm is autofocus and best for hand holding, the Panasonic 25mm is a nice compromise if you can work at 25mm. The 25mm CCTV lens is a cheap manual focus with good bokeh. Hi, I've a Olympus OM-D E-M1 and from my very old Pentax MG I also have the following lens:
- Pentax 1:1.7 50mm
-Tokura 1:3.5-4.5 28-70mm and
-Tokura 1:4.0-5.6 70-210mm
So my answer is, is it possible to use these lens in my Olympus, if yes, how and is it worthy?

Hi. It's possible to use those lenses. The Pentax you would set the IBIS to 50mm. The Tokura are zoom lenses so I would turn IBIS off. I think the Pentx 50mm will be worth it but not the Tokura zooms.

Yes, they are great because they are generally smaller than other similar brands of that era. Optics are top notch too.

Set the camera to aperture priority, then the camera will meter from there.

I just received my new Meike Nikon-F to MFT adapter. I have 2 questions:
1. When using my 50mm Nikkor lens... should I enter 50mm as the lens's focal length, while manually calibrating the IBIS for it or multiply it by 2 i.e 100mm?
2. Will the vibration control of my Tamron (for Nikon) lens work, when mounted on my Olympus O-MD EM10 II with the adapter?

1. Set the ibis to 50mm. Always use the focal length of the lens, not the equivalent.
2. The vc on any non-native lens will not work.

Today I received the 25mm - I liked it's effect better than of 35mm, at least on your photos. I put it on my Olympus pen, then the olympus omd em1, but nothing is happening. It seems that the adapters fit alright but no view and the shutter button would not press. I wonder what I'm doing wrong?🤔
Most likely the lock pin on the camera mount is still depressed and you need to turn the lens more until you hear it click. Turn the lens adapter, don't turn the lens by it's barrel as you might twist it too much.

Just got the 35mm F1.7 from Amazon with the c mount for M4/3. I can not focus to infinity! Very frustrated. Anybody an idea what the reason could be?
Usually, the problem is the rear element is not close enough to the sensor. Try to screw the lens in tighter into the lens adapter. If you have another c mount adapter, try that. Otherwise, you may have to try an exchange with Amazon. I've bought two of them and don't have any problem, but the build quality questionable, so it doesn't surprise me. Let me know how it works out!

Thanks! I'm sure you'll enjoy those lenses. I would avoid old zoom lenses with very few exceptions. The biggest problems are they generally suck and tuning the stabilization. You can only set stabilization to a specific focal length, and zooms cover a large range. If you turn the stabilization off and go old school techniques (focal length x 2 shutter speed), then okay. But then you have to be in really good light because you'll be at f/5.6 or higher with a shutter speed at 1/400+. I'm going to do a video on some prime telephotos soon (after I finish my taxes). The Olympus 40-150mm for $100 is excellent and lightweight. I'd get that over any old school zoom. For telephoto primes, the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 AIS $100, Nikkor 200mm f/4 AIS $100, and the bargain Minolta 135mm f/3.5 $40. Also, any of the Vivitar Series 1 lenses are nice. If you can find a Vivitar made by Cosina, even better. I'll get into that in another video. I've just had so much on my plate this month, no time to make any new videos.

Sorry for another question. Actually I watch your videos several times and every time I learn something new. I shot the moon with my Tamron 18-400mm VC at 400mm adapted to my Olympus O-MD EM10 II and while manually focusing on it through the LCD...it showed horrible ghosting and flare, but the final image didn't have any ghosting or flare. What can be the reason for that? BTW...I had the lens hood on it. I always do...on all my lenses.

Only thing I can think of is either the camera is correcting the issue in jpg or the software you are using is correcting for this. Are the raw files looking okay too? Another reason could be the live view is operating at a different aperture and shutter speed than how you've set the camera. Try programming a button for preview and then see if you still get ghosting/flaring when in preview mode. Let me know. THanks!
@@RobTrek The RAW files came out really nice and I am very happy with the result. The camera LCD and the EVF...both showed severe ghosting...as if showing two moons...both as blobs of light...with no definition at all. Only after magnifying the image for manual focus... everything was sharp and clear.
I'm gonna try and do some moon shots and astro this winter. I've had good success with my Nikon d750 and 20mm f/1.8. Curious how my Olympus gear will do.

I haven't tried it yet. The 60mm focal length is holding me back, nevermind the price. If I did more portrait work, I might be tempted.

Hello, I was wondering about the crop ratio when these lens are mounted. The Micro 4/3 system has a crop factor of x2 when it comes to full frame, will it be the same with these lens?
Yes, you will need to multiply by 2 for FF equivalent.

I always recommend a lens hood. An ND filter is used for cutting light so you can shoot at slower shutter speeds or lower apertures. Lens hoods help reduce glare and increase contrats.

They offered me 10€ back but I'd really like to make it work... Is there any tip out there for helping a poor photographer with this cute but useless lens ? Lens adaptater issue ? If it's the 35mm 1.7, that is the one lens I don't recommend. The quality control and/or design is very poor. You might want to try screwing the lens in tighter to the mount so that the rear lens element is closer to the sensor. Infinity focus is lost when the rear lens element is just a hair too far away. Try a different adapter if you have one, it may let the lens screw in a bit closer. Other than that, it will probably never work.

Sorry, the feature is not available on the em10, or em5. em1 and PenF has it. You can add it back in Lightroom using a plugin called Lenstagger. Thank you for your question!

Thanks. That lens didn't give the same swirly bokeh effect and was difficult to focus due the focus ring being sloppy. I would turn it one way, then back the other way, but it wouldn't change focus until I overshot the last stop. I never use now. Might be just my copy, as quality control is non existent.

My update (if anyone is interested)...I just received the Fujinon 35mm f/1.7 lens and now I understand why Rob advised to avoid this one and go for the 35mm f/1.6 ONLY. The adapter wouldn't come off and the build quality is one of the poorest, I have ever seen. Two really long extension tubes were also included, which I didn't really care about. Undoubtedly...It is the worst lens, which I have ever used and I own many lenses from several brands. So...I am going to order the 2nd one now. Let's hope this one turns out good enough.

Thanks. let me know how it works out. these lenses are very cheap, so I get reports of bad copies time to time. I've ordered two. My first one worked great. Some screws came loose and it fell apart. Totally my fault, I should have tightened them when I had the chance.
Dear Rob, I have received exactly the lenses you suggest from the same eBay vendors, with adaptors that fit the bayonet mount of my OMD E-M10 Mkii. I have, however, failed to mount the adapted lenses as, having attached the adaptor first to the camera body, then slowly and gently screwing the lenses into the adaptor thread (for safety reasons), the the rear of the lenses' screw mounts seems to protrude a fraction of an inch beyond the back of the bayonet adaptor resulting in a rather loose fit. I am also not getting any image at all (i.e., black viewfinder/rear screen, even when the camera is set to manual and I move through all aperture settings. I should point out that the camera has been set up for rear button focusing. Do you have any suggestions, as I'd love to try the bokeh effects? Many thanks!
I prefer to screw the mount onto the lens before mounting to the camera. If the fitting is a little loose, you can put a try a thin peace of plumbers tape on the threads to add some friction. As far as the balck screen, that would imply that you haven't turned the lens mount all the way to the locking position. There is a little pin that protrudes from the camera that sticks out through a hole to lock the lens into place. Please keep me posted!
Dear Rob, Many thanks for your very swift and full reply to my enquiry. I did, initially, attach the adaptor to each of the lenses, in turn, first but on trying to attach the adaptor bayonet to the camera, was unable easily to couple the two and noticed the slightly protruding end of the lenses' screw threads at the back of the adaptor plate. This prompted me to 'play it safe' and instead mount the adaptor first to the camera. The adaptor did then engage fully and snugly with the body seating, clicking into place and depressing the pin. I have tried both the recommended lenses but each is a rather loose fit to two supplied adaptor plates, as I'm afraid to force the screw threads. In both cases, there is no image despite the lens mount engagement pin being depressed and the lenses being reasonably tightly screwed in. Frankly, I am mystified, as the immediate substitution of a 4/3 lens, without any resetting of the camera, returns imaging to normal!
Dear Rob, 'Apologies for the post below. I've now been a bit more brave, firmly screwing the lenses into their adaptors as a first step and then persevering with the coupling of the adaptor to the camera and -- success! I'm not really sure what I've done this time that I failed to do before, apart (possibly) from not rotating the adaptor fully into the camera body, despite thinking I'd done so. Images are now appearing as expected for both lenses. Very many thanks again!

I got swirly bokeh with my full frame camera using duct tape. I'll do a quick vide on it with pictures. However, you can search youtube and find others who have done this.
