Arcaungues was really 133 to 1, not because he wasn't good, it's because the betters here don't know much about him, he's got good pedigree and his trainer is one of the best in Europe
"As the years have gone by, so many people have told me they bet Arcangues. If all those people had bet him, he wouldn´t have paid US$269. It was a strange race to win because I had no history with the horse, and at the time, I hadn´t developed a relationship with Fabre or the Wildensteins. It was like a one-night stand. It turned out pretty good for me. It´ll probably never happen again, but it was great that time Jerry Bailey (1957- ) Arcangues´ jockey. Greetings from Venezuela.
Shortly before the race went off, Arcangues' owner put an $80,000 win bet on his horse. Given the long odds, he got over a million back for the bet plus what he got from the purse. That horse paid for his retirement many times over.
+qhsperson The win pool was 1,660,216. I don't know how it would have affected the odds if 80k had been plonked in.. but he might have still made good money!
+Spicetruck (Nari) I'll say this--the three guys who were doing the commentary were down at the track, and when the cameras came back on them after a commercial, they all had their backs to the camera because they were staring at the tote board. One of them was saying, "Did you see that? The odds? What's going on?" Live on tv. Brilliant moment. Then they realized they were on live, turned around and tried explaining what was going on. The tote only went up to 99-1, and the horse paid off at 133-1, so perhaps the tote lit up like a pinball machine for a while. Oddly, it's one of my favorite racing moments because it was so real.
Imagine Cigars resume if they would have kept him on dirt after breaking his maiden 2nd time out. Instead he spent the next roughly 16 months mostly toiling on turf. I know he had breeding the leaned turf but usually they will try to stretch out on dirt and if the connections think the horse is good enough they will try stake races. Stakes races on dirt in America are more prestigious and lead to much higher stud deals than turf horses would get. Still has a great resume but he might be talked about as an All Time Great.
I had gone to Keeneland to bet the days races with my brother in law, Blaine (RIP) who introduced me to horse racing. We owned a duplex and came home and were watching the races downstairs in his bar. I was betting J D Bailey at the time a lot. Arcangues had back problems off and on. When he warmed up like his back was feeling good and loose, I picked him to win. Wish I had been at the track that day!
I had heard from a source close to the Wilderstein's thatr Arcangues had a disk problem in his back and when Andre Fabre tried him on a flat, hard surface he blew away his work mate. Fabre had saddled Jolypha, a three year old filly, to run third behind A.P Indy and Pleasant Tap. Arcangues was better than Jolypha and there was no A.P. Indy in this field. It was the biggest score of my life. The exacta with Bertrando paid $1,800 for every deuce.
I think Arcangues would have beaten AP Indy quite easily because he beat Jolypha by more than 20 lengths in training on the sand. AP Indy beat Jolypha only by 3 lengths ...
It's like they were all mocking Arcangues including the jockey, why didn't they be serious and talk about his finishing kick and coming from a long way back to win the race pretty easily in the end, ignore the price any horse trained by Fabre has got to be taken seriously and its a shame the American commentators just laughed about it, great performance Arcangues 👏👏
I was out there that day, but I couldn't see Arcangue that day. My partner bet everything over Best-Pal & Bertrando and he also bet a $2 exacta Best-Pal & Bertrando over the field. Well, he got paid a thousand & something that day.
Over here his best price I could find was 50/1 . I put £5 n let it ride on the American odds , he paid 134.6/1 Although the crowd fell silent I think woke the whole street up with my cheering .

He was win less that day until the Classic. Bet Bailey...The horse was the class of the field, but Americans barely know about French horses. If you would have saw Jolypha run against AP Indy in the Classic you would know the class of Arcangues. Jolypha wasn't even close to as good as her stablemate Arcangues. If people knew the class horse he was, his odds would have been around 10-1 or lower.

this horse race changed horse racing history
Arcangues had back problems off and on. When he warmed up like his back was feeling good and loose, I picked him to win. Wish I had been at the track that day!
