Thank you! Yes, Coop was definitely on my mind. Thank you. To paraphrase a phrase spoken by Cooper in the limited series, rollzroyce21, I am witness to the fact that you have a heart of gold. Best regards.
Hey Daisuke, I would love to see a Criterion of Sunset Boulevard, and more Wilder films in general. Memories of Murder by Bong Joon-Ho would be amazing addition too. It would be amazing to get more Kubrick and Hitchcock, for example Vertigo, Rope and a Clockwork Orange. The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer would be couple of contemporary films I'd love to see added to Criterion Collection. Taxi Driver, The King of Comedy, Network, Fail-Safe and The Verdict would be great too.
SJSFilms, how are you doing today my friend? MEMORIES OF MURDER... this would be great as Korean films are sadly under-represented in the Criterion Collection at the moment. I would love to see VERTIGO go to the Criterion Collection as it is my favorite film ever. I think I watch that film at least once a month. I love your mentioning too of films like FAIL SAFE and THE VERDICT and NETWORK. I love Lumet very much. Speaking of which, I recently saw the MoC release of THE OFFENCE, with Sean Connery. Have you seen it? It was a mind-blowing experience.
I'm good buddy, how are you? I totally agree on Korean films being under-represented, there are many great ones, I'd love to see some Park Chan-Wook films like Joint Security Area and The Handmaiden in the Criterion Colllection. You watch Vertigo once a month wow I love the film, but I couldn't watch it that often. Only film I rewatch several times a year is my favorite film of all time The Shining (I'd love to see this on Criterion). Sidney Lumet is a top 5 favorite director for me. I haven't seen The Offence, but I'm aware of it and I saw your comment on it on Letterboxd. I need to buy the Masters of Cinema release sooner rather than later. Have a nice weekend mate!
SJSFilms ooh... I just saw the HANDMAIDEN actually! Wow, what an experience 😃. And I too would love to see THE SHINING as well. Same to you, have a great weekend my friend.
Hello Daisuke, I came back to this video simply to comment that I just had the absolute pleasure of watching what I think is the most uncut version of "The Devils", I really am lost for words. But your words here are simply perfect, we need a release! This needs much more attention and love and hate! I love your passion for it so much, slowly but surely I too am falling in love with it.
Great video buddy! I agree we need to see more Hou Hsiao-hsien in the Criterion collection, I would love to see Kurosawa's Stray Dog and Red Beard have bluray upgrades. I also think they should release some Tsai Ming-liang titles.
Tsai Ming-liang.. you are so right and I am already regretting not mentioning that in the video! Which film do you think would be a good candidate? I would say What Time Is It There, but if you had to pick one, what would it be? Stray Dog and Red Beard... those are fine DVDs but yes you are right there too, in that they would be so well served as upgraded blus. I suppose that if we are speaking of Kurosawa, it would be nice also to have THE QUIET DUEL in the collection as well, as well as breaking out MADADAYO from the huge AK box set and making it its own release. What do you think?
Honestly, you are one of the best movie-focused channels on TH-cam! I love your videos and how polite you are. Keep up the amazing content. I would love to see Béla Tarr, Zhang Yimou and Alejandro Jodorowsky get some representation in the collection as well as some more Kaufman/Jonze and Haneke like Synecdoche, New York, Adaptation, Her, The White Ribbon, and Caché.
Dear Gannon K., what a really nice thing to say. Thank you so much! That is so kind of you. And, oh my gosh... BELA TAR! I should have mentioned this but I didn't. And another viewer commented to me about ZHANG YIMOU... To Live utterly transformed me when I saw it.... and JODOROWSKY... of course... this would be fantastic. Would it be too cliche of me to say El Topo?? I remember my friend took me to see that and the HOLY MOUNTAIN when they were re-released in theaters some years ago, and we saw it in a theater in NYC, with Mr. Jodorowsky there taking questions. It was such an amazing experience.
Thank you, and it was a really wonderful experience. But perhaps we together can hope for these films to get the Criterion treatment one day. Cheers from Tokyo!
Also another technical point that the Criterion Collection does really well: Including a high quality mono track as a supplement when a film has revived a multi channel remix . The newest example I can think off is Barry Lyndon.
For those who are interested in The Trial (1962), there is also the UK/France/Germany Blu-ray from Studio Canal (Region B locked). And considering the relationship between Criterion and Studio Canal, it might not be easy to be released in the US, I'm afraid. (for those who don't know, Studio Canal retrieved the rights of their catalog titles from Criterion in recent years, including such major titles like The Third Man, Army of Shadows, Ran, to name a few. Now Lionsgate seems to control SC catalog in the US, but they don't care for 'old' and/or 'foreign' films.) If Criterion releases The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987), I hope they make it a double feature with the director's another major achievement, Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 (1974). Yes, they should release A City of Sadness (1989), one of the two best Taiwanese gangster epics (haha), along with A Brighter Summer Day (1991). I heard the copyright issue for the film is a nightmare, but I do hope someone's restoring it. While I don't mind your choices themselves at all, some of them feel a bit redundant Blu-ray-wise, frankly. I mean, I will welcome Criterion edition of The Exotcist (1973), The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) or Ciritzen Kane (1941) as much as the next guy, but the current Blu-rays are good enough for me that I'm in no dire need of new editions. No offense, of course. Oh, and just in case if you missed the news, Kino Lorber just announced the new 4K restoration of The Atomic Cafe (1982). It will be screened in select theaters in the US and after that, Blu-ray too. Here's the trailer for the re-release: th-cam.com/video/AymBFIo2-sM/w-d-xo.html
This is such a fantastic comment. Thank you so much, Jiro Hong! This is the kind of comment that I truly cherish: you are so well-informed and clear, and you have your own views that differ from mine. And yet you are respectful and to the point, which I really appreciate. It is such a thrill to read your comment. Thank you so much for giving me the privilege of doing so. And let me say at the outset that I am not at all offended about your views on redundant releases on blu, regarding titles like the TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE, etc. You have an excellent point. One of the great things about Criterion releases is of course the release of titles that have not yet gotten a better release or any release at all. And your comment really makes me appreciate this point more. However, I still think these "redundant" titles are still worth having in the Collection, if for anything than as a kind of sign or indication that these films are "important" or "worthy". And of course Criterion has, or is going to, release titles that have had releases in the past, like THE PRINCESS BRIDE (I am not sure how you feel about that one, but I am welcoming of it), and so I suppose it is good to expect these sorts of releases as well as the rare or novel ones. But that is still my way of totally agreeing with you and really appreciating your comment! On that point, yes, there is already a great blu ray set of CITIZEN KANE... but there is just something about the notion of having CITIZEN KANE "back" into the Criterion Collection... for one like me who is an unashamed Criterion fan, my desire to seen this film as a Criterion disc is unavoidable. But, yes, please, feel free to disagree and I am again totally cool with that. As for your updates about other titles like THE TRIAL, and ATOMIC CAFE, etc., this is great. Thank you! I am usually not on top of my blu ray news like most people, though I try to be as up to date as possible. I suppose though that, even for a film like the ATOMIC CAFE, seeing how it was once a Voyager Laserdisc, I would still love to have it be in the Criterion Collection, as a kind of another link to Criterion's laser days, but that is not to say that I dislike KINO LORBER... on the contrary, I love that label as well. And your comment about Kazuo Hara... YES!!! What an absolutely fabulous idea!!!! It never occurred to me before, but reading your comment about it makes me so excited about that! EXTREME PRIVATE EROS: LOVE SONG 1974 was also released by Facets on a DVD, which I also own. I should have mentioned that in my video but I failed to do so unfortunately... your mentioning it to me now has rekindled my interest and love for that intimate and astounding film. And I am thrilled to hear of your endorsement of my feelings about CITY OF SADNESS... I admit to not knowing too many details, but I also suspect something akin to A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY with respect to rights issues.... but it needs to be seen by as many people as possible. Jiro Hong, I would love to talk with you more, my friend. You truly are a great cinephile and one with excellent tastes in cinema. Best regards from Tokyo.
Great comments, Jiro Hong. You are well informed. Nice explanation of the controversy between Studio Canal and Criterion. I'm sure that a lot of people don't know about that unfortunate situation.
I recognise the feeling about Blu-rays already out there. But on the other hand, and apart from the Criterion extras/print quality, I guess a lot of people don't have region free players which must be really aggravating - along the same lines I know I get frustrated at releases that lack English sub-titles (especially French TV stuff or the occasional Korean movie).
The Trial is magnificent. Other titles I'd love to see on Criterion include Performance, Stroszek, Nostalghia, The Conversation, Chinese Roulette, Hud, Old Joy, Wendy and Lucy, and Barton Fink
Dude yes, Tie Xi Qu on Criterion would be incredible. I'm really hoping that they restore any Tsai Ming-liang film, and probably my favorite film from Japan, Eureka (2000).
Oh yes, Tsai Ming-liang! I agree. And Eureka... I remember I saw this in the theater 3 times when it was released. The soundtrack CD is also one I revisit many times. It is a great suggestion.
Strange Days by Kathryn Bigelow, A Face In The Crowd by Elia Kazan, The Witches by Nicholas Roeg, Lolita by Stanley Kubrick, Bullet In The Head by John Woo, Eat, Drink, Man Woman by Ang Lee, Derzu Uzala by Akira Kurosawa, Tremors by Ron Underwood, Nankyoku Monogatari or Antartica by Koreyoshi Kurahara, Lost Highway by David Lynch, Dune by David Lynch, Election by Jonnie To (any Jonnie To in fact), any Werner Hertzog film, any Jackie Chan (Hong Kong era only, Empire of the Sun by Steven Speilberg, The Long Goodbye by Robert Altman , and finally Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A Space Odyssey needs to return to the collection just off the top of my head .
These are all fantastic, ComicBook Ninja! I notice that you have some titles that are Criterion laserdiscs, like Lolita or Dersul Uzala. You also mention Jackie Chan whose Supercop was also a CC LD. Also 2001 was a CC LD as well.. I am of the belief that Criterion will try its best to have most of its LD catalog return to the current collection. So I hold out hope for these titles. What do you think? As for the other titles you mentioned, I remember watching the WITCHES and just being so scared and marveled by it as a kid. But you are the first person who has mentioned this film in the context of what films should be included in the Criterion Collection. And you should be applauded for this. I am really happy to read this!
Daisuke Beppu, yes I bought many of the laser discs back in the day. They were an important part in developing my film aesthetics. I never bought Supercop because the CC release was only the shorter American cut. I do believe Criterion is slowly trying to match its laserdisc catalogue with the recent releases/ anouncements of The Princess Bride and Shampoo as an example. I base my choices on the filmmakers they already have in the collection like Roeg and Kurosawa and some that have never been but should be like Kathryn Bigelow. Did you know that you could make suggestions for future titles at Criterion's website? I used to do that and many have come to the collection. Since they redesigned their website recently I'm not sure if that is still the case. You should check.
Oh my goodness! These are fabulous recommendations, ComicBook Ninja. I agree with all of them. Bullet In the Head is one of my all-time favorite films, and so is A Face In the Crowd. Empire of the Sun is such an underrated Spielberg film, too. The Long Goodbye has no definitive edition that I know of either. You have excellent taste! And more Werner Herzog should go Criterion...Thank you!
I would love to see some Hungarian movies in the collection so the world could see some of the masterpieces. My personal favorite is Abigél (1978). It’s actually a mini series. Or another very intriguing wonderful movie is On Body and Soul (2017). I could go on!
filozsofia thank you so much for this great comment! It truly is wonderful because it shows how inexperienced I know of Hungarian cinema... so, if you don’t mind, please go on! What are the titles that one should have? Of course I and many others will mention Bela Tarr cinema, or István Szabó, etc., but for me at least my knowledge and experience with Hungarian cinema ends there I’m afraid. So I am so curious and happy to hear about what other recommendations you have! If you have a moment, please let me know! After reading your great comment I looked online about ON BODY AND SOUL and it looks very intriguing!! As for Abigel, this too looks intriguing and also the source novel as well. Have you read the novel?
Daisuke Beppu You are such an inspirational person! Thank you for your interest! I just found your channel recently and I am amazed. Every one of your videos shows your wide knowledge about cinema and you are so humble about it! One can learn a lot from you! So as you mentioned some of the critically acclaimed directors it shows that you are more knowledgeable than most people! Yes I read the book Abigél by Szabó Magda and it is one of my favorite books also! I would be so happy to see it in the Criterion Collection I actually submitted a request about it directly to them. 😊 Unfortunately it has never been released on Blu-ray only on DVD and only one release has English subtitles. On Body and Soul is a very philosophical movie that sucks you in and you will thinking about it for days. It was up for Oscars this year in Foreign film category. Oh and the cinematography is just amazing. I wish it would’ve won! I thought I share more of my personal favorites with you, some of them are popular and some are very underrated and forgotten. I start with the ones that I think would fit into the Criterion “style”. Sinbad (Szindbád 1971) Nobody’s Daughter (Árvacska 1976) Édes Anna (1958) Opium: Diary of a Madwoman (Ópium: Egy elmebeteg nő naplója 2007) Demimonde (Félvilág 2015) The following titles are also personal favorites but some of them are mainstream cinema and others just purely entertaining. An American Rhapsody (2001) - This movie is a coproduction with the US and probably the most known on this list, although it is very underrated in my opinion. Kincsem (2017) Children of Glory (2006) Poligamy (2009) Chameleon (2008) Also you could check out the short movie Mindenki (2016 Sing) Thank you for your interest! As I said these are my personal favorites and there are some other critically acclaimed movies out there like Son of Saul, The Fifth Seal or Mephisto. I’m so delighted humbled by your interest! On the other hand I am interesting in Japanese culture and cinema I would be interested in your recommendations!
filozsofia reading your kind and thoughtful response has been an absolute joy and educational experience for me, for I know nothing of most of these films. Thank you so much for this. I learn so much. Now I have heard of AMERICAN RHAPSODY but as of yet not had a chance to see it. I think I will try to track that down. Are there many films that are made available in the United States, or is it worth it for me to spend my time looking at European releases? Again, I am learning so much that I printed out your comment and posted it on my desk. I need to study this much more! Thank you for being my teacher! As for my recommendations of Japanese cinema, I suppose I should start with the big ones: Ozu and Kurosawa... practically any film by them is a gold mine. Now the filmmaker Hirokazu Kore-Eda is also very popular and his films are stunning. I have been a great admirer of his works for some time. Also he is not Japanese, but I strongly recommend Taiwanese filmmaker Edward Yang. His films especially YI YI and A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY are epic masterpieces of modern family life and drama.
Daisuke, I feel very honored! Thank you. Unfortunately to my knowledge none of these movies are released in the US. Currently I live in the US and it is hard to get my hands on Hungarian movies. Even in Hungary a lot of them are hard to find. Most of them has only DVD releases in Hungary. Only couple of them has Blu-ray releases from my list, one is the movie KINCSEM (Hungarian release) and I believe there are multiple Blu-ray releases of ON BODY AND SOUL (German, Dutch, Italian, Hong Kong). Thank you for your recommendations, I will check them out if I get a chance. It would be amazing if you would make a video about "Beginners guide to Japanese/Eastern movies" one day. :)
Hi filozsofia, thank you again for your follow up comment! This is great. So, I understand from your comment that even now it is difficult to get Hungarian films in the United States through releases there. This is too bad, but I hope the situation changes soon because it would be so amazing for people like me to experience this treasure trove of quality from Hungary. And thank you for letting us know about the possible availability of ON BODY AND SOUL elsewhere. And thank you for your suggestion for an awesome video topic! I am currently working on a video that will hopefully be uploaded this week or next, on that very topic! You and I seem to have a psychic connection!! Best regards. --Daisuke
Great Video again, Daisuke! I have to agree on most of your choices. Especially The Devils and Tie Xi Qu would be amazing as they don't have HD releases at all. I'm hoping for 1) all of the World Cinema Project titles like Muna Moto, Soleil Ô or The Night of Counting the Years. 2) the films of Hans-Jürgen Syberberg (Parsifal, Hitler: A Film from Germany, Karl May) 3) The Last Wave by Peter Weir 4) Tropical Malady by Apichatpong Weerasethakul 5) Ode to Nothing by Dwein Baltazar 6) Himala by Ishmael Bernal 7) a Wakamatsu box set 8) The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye 9) The Silences of the Palace by Moufida Tlatli 10) Landscape Suicide by James Benning 11) India Song by Marguerite Duras 12) Workingman's Death by Michael Glawogger 13) When the Tenth Month Comes by Dang Nhat Minh 14) This Night I'll PossessYour Corpse and At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul by José Mojica Marins 15) Girlfriends by Claudia Weill 16) Twenty Years Later by Eduardo Coutinho 17) Araya by Margot Benacerraf 18) Sacrificed Youth by Zhang Nuanxin 19) Eve's Bayou by Kasi Lemmons and 20) The Last Faust by Carlos Reichenbach Plus I'm desperately waiting for the Blu-ray releases of 1) Come and See 2) Streetwise 3) The Meetings of Anna and 4) The Ascent
Hello Felix, and thank you so much for your comment and for your kind words and for your excellent, excellent list. What a great list you provide. I have not done any of these "wishlist" videos in a long time, but I would like to do so, hopefully very soon, especially after receiving such great comments and lists like the ones you provided. Thank you so much for your kind and inspiring comment!
Please do! That would be wonderful. It's always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on this topic. I'd love to see more films in the collection that have no Blu-ray release so far because Criterion could really bring these titles back to life and give them a larger audience.
paul casino yes... I agree with your theory. Granted, I can understand if someone were to say that the “00” spine numbers are Not always allocated to “great” films (like say Spine no. 100); however, it seems that a number like, say 500, is a particularly milestone of a number, and that was allocated to the Rossellini War Trilogy box itself (which is a very symbolic gesture), and I’d say that the number 1000 is an even bigger milestone, especially in the context of a DVD and blu ray label. By the way, even if it isn’t KANE, i would be happy if 1000 is given to MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS... though my sense is that this will not happen because it is my sense that Criterion wouldn’t announce this early the title that is to be 1000, but rather Criterion would rather have it as a surprise. What do you think?
@@DaisukeBeppu For me the films that should have this release in the criterion collection are... Goodfellas Casino The red violin Edward scissorhands Gladiator Disney's the lion king and DreamWorks the Prince of Egypt
Oh my goodness.. you have the best name!!!! Thank you so much!! A compliment from you, with the name you have!! that really means a lot! Thank you so much again. And please let me know when you become complete... I know 90 is still a lot but relatively speaking you are sooo close!!! Of the 90, are there any that are hard to get or OOP?
I agree William Friedkin definitely needs to be part of the Criterion collection! WB, unfortunately probably wouldn’t license out the Exorcist. It’s part of their signature catalog titles. I would assume at some point they will do a ultrahd version of it. Cruising however, is interesting. It has no blu ray release, and that perhaps could be a welcome addition to the Criterion collection.
Dear leeroygreene85, thank you for your great comment. You have a great point about WB and the Exorcist, which I did not realize but reading your comment it makes sense. But, yes, CRUISING seems to be potentially more of a possibility, at least in terms of a film that has potential for further "discovery" by Criterion fans alike. Yes, I agree with you 100%. Thank you for your comment!
Probably my favorite video of yours so far. Great choices! I would add "Los Olvidados" to this list. Anything which has no definitive edition or boutique label already attached to it. At least Woody Allen got some box sets via Arrow. There are so many. I always found it odd that "Life During Wartime" is in the Collection but not the superior "Happiness." A lot to think about. Excellent topic!
Mark Repp hello! How are you my friend! Oh man!!! LOS OLVIDADOS!! I have the DVD and I was going to feature it in my video but it slipped my mind!!! I totally agree with you, especially because, as you suggest, it appears to not have been afforded any deluxe treatment on blu yet.
Interesting picks as usual, Daisuke! By the way, are you a fan of Zhang Yimou? I think some of his classics should certainly be in the CC - especially Raise the Red Lantern and To Live. Also the films of Iranian director Majid Majidi (Children of Heaven, The Color of Paradise, etc.).
Tim, now that you mention Zhang Yimou, of course, I should have mentioned To Live or Huozhe. I was so affected by that film when I saw it many years ago, and yes I should have mentioned it. Thank you for this. And Majid Majidi's CHILDREN OF HEAVEN! Of course! Oh my goodness, what a fantastic film. I am so glad you mentioned this. I agree with you 100%.
I'm here two years later, but great video Daisuke! Sadly, not a single one of these suggested movies has joined the collection. Arrow has released Friedkin's "Cruising" which is just as nice I feel. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Devils have also been on the Criterion Channel.
Hi Daisuke, I’m really enjoying your channel. There are many great suggestions here, but I’d like to see the films of Fatih Akin in the Criterion Collection, Especially “Head On” and “The Edge of Heaven”.
I've always dreamed of having Boys in the Band by William Friedkin being in Criterion! It's such a thorough examination of the gay culture of the late 60s in Manhattan. It also dives into racism in the gay community with an honest look. I'd love to see that.
Thank you Dustin. You know, I have never seen BOYS IN THE BAND but I would love to now, thanks to your comment about it. I understand this is from 1970, and so it would provide a fascinating perspective on the time. I think this would be a fine contender for inclusion into the Criterion Collection.
I don't disagree at all with any of your picks, Daisuke. All important films in need of premium home video treatment. Loved that you recommended Texas Chainsaw (one of my personal favorites). My picks for what should enter the collection are mainly films by cinema's finest directors who either need to be represented or demand more representation. This includes the aforementioned Friedkin, Claire Denis, Billy Wilder, Werner Herzog, Hirokazu Kore-eda, list goes on and on. - Dan (from the CriterionNow group)
Hello, Dan! Thank you for your comment here! I love your list of filmmakers... Claire Denis, well yes there is only WHITE MATERIAL in the CC right now, right? So, I would say that I totally agree with you... And then Wilder... here I think the MoC has an edge over the CC in that the MoC has more Wilder films... but the CC did have films like Some Like It Hot on laserdisc, and I think there are rumors swirling around that this film might indeed return to the CC sooner than we might think... As for Herzog... there are no direct films that have been directed by him in the collection, right... so that is a shame. And Kore-eda... we need more Kore-eda in the collection... I recall that another comment mentioned AFTER LIFE, which is a wonderful film that has a quirky premise that is dealt with in such a charming and sincere manner. That would be such a great addition.
Hello Daisuke. I really enjoyed this discussion. I would like to share a list of my suggestions that the mighty C might consider adopting. Catch 22, directed by Mike Nichols and an all-star cast. I own the DVD edition of this which includes a commentary between the director and Steven Soderberg, and it is fascinating. I think this film would fit Criterion like a glove. It is so surreal yet funny, witty and moving. It touches on all aspects. Two directors I am a big fan of-Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Roman Polanski, I would love to see in the big C. I can envision a box set along the lines of the Tati box or the Demi set for Jeunet's wonderful feature films- Amelie, Delicatessen, A Very Long Engagement and City of Lost Children. It would be a dream come true. Polanski, already well represented in the Collection, I would love if they could curate editions for The Tenant and The Fearless Vampire Killers. What are those movies called with different stories by different directors-anthology's? There is one I own on DVD and was made in 1965, titled Six In Paris, with short films by directors Eric Rohmer, Claude Chabrol, Jean-Luc Godard and others. I think this would fit nicely into the collection. You have a Eureka MoC edition called Ro.Go.Pa.G, which I believe, is one of these anthology type films. If you ever have the time to give a review of that, I would appreciate your thoughts. There are two comedies I would love to see enter the collection. A New Leaf, directed by and starring Elaine May, co-starring Walter Matthau. I just love this film and talk has been of an extended ending that May nixed, which maybe Criterion could talk her into including. Wouldn't it be nice (to quote the beach boys) to have Marilyn in the collection? The Seven Year Itch by Billy Wilder has long been a favorite of mine. I love the dialogue between the two leads-Marilyn and Tom Ewell. It's really a classic....so deserving of the Criterion treatment. Finally, and this would be daring for Criterion, and when has Criterion turned down a challenge, I would propose, perhaps an Eclipse set of the films of the Kuchar brothers. They made their mark in the late 1950's and 1960's with ultra-low budget, kitchen sink, black and white (of course) mock drama's/dark comedies. Little labors of love filmed on their rooftops and bathrooms. John Waters has cited them as a terrific influence. The Film Forum, which you may know from having lived in New York, once ran a mini-retrospective of their films, that I was fortunate enough to attend. Well, Daisuke, thank you very much for letting me drift on a bit with my own suggestions for the big C. Wouldn't it be lovely if they were to read this?
What a fantastic comment! I really love this. So there is so much here... First, yes, I have not forgotten Ro.Go.Pa.G. I will do more with the MoC though it may be a bit of time before I can make some videos on those. However I am planning those, and when I do I would love to show them to you and get your thoughts! I used to live very near to the Film Forum when I was in New York, so it is a very important place! I love living in Tokyo, but there are times when I miss living in New York, and having Lincoln Center, the Film Forum, Kims Video (now closed)... I saw A NEW LEAF for the first time on the MoC release, and I must say it was fantastic. Also, I agree with you about more comedies... THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH is a great candidate... And what a fantastic suggestion for a new Eclipse set!!!! The Kuchar brothers!!!!! So great!! It would certainly be a bold release should Criterion endeavor to tackle that challenge. But the films would seem to be right up the alley of Eclipse and its mission. Speaking of Eclipse, I would love to see, say a Brothers Quay box set... You may know that there were Voyager laserdiscs of the Brothers Quay films, and so there is a Criterion-linked precedent. I would love to see a set like that, and also another example of more animation in the collection. I should have mentioned that in the video...
Daisuke-san, this is an amazing collection, and your video is very, very entertaining. I would love to see one of my favorite films of all time, "Moonstruck" directed by Norman Jewison on Criterion Collection. I think Cher in this film deserves a Criterion treatment!
Hello, 東野正剛さん、and thank you very much for your comment. I am very happy and surprised by the feedback and by your really nice and wonderful comment. It is very kind of you. As for your suggestion about MOONSTRUCK, what a splendid idea! I really love that movie! Snap out of it! And what a fantastic nomination for entry into the Criterion Collection! This would be splendid!
Hey my friend, just found your channel yesterday - after I finished watching The Terrorizers - and already love what you’re doing! 🌿 I’m thinking about your question. While there are tons of films that I love and hence would love to see get “the Criterion treatment”, there is this wonderful Indian film that is available on DVD and probably Blu-Ray as well, but since Indian DVD companies are generally not at all concerned about releasing the film in the best possible quality - and film producers at that time did not care enough to preserve their films - many, many films are available only in a quality that makes me sad. The film I’d love to see picked up by Criterion is “Saheb Bibi aur Ghulam” (English title would be: The Master, The Mistress and The Servant) directed by Abrar Alvi and released in 1962 or 1963. It apparently was selected for the competition section at the Berlin Film Festival at that time, but I don’t think many people know of the film. Love the film so much and I would love to rediscover the film as it should be seen. 😍 Anyway, one can dream right? 😁🇳🇱
Still amazed by how deep you’re collection goes Daisuke, never heard of any the titles you show except for The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Citizen Kane and of coarse David Lynch‘s work ! If I could offer suggestions for what could be on Criterion it would be Nightcrawler (2014) Birdman (2014) The Disappearance Of Alice Creed (2009) & The French Connection 👍
Great comment, X24RIDER!! And you taught me AGAIN about films I don't know... THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ALICE CREED. Now, after reading your comment, I look online, and it looks like it is a fantastic film, with a great cast. This looks to be a recent film as well, with one of my favorite actors ever Eddie Marsan. So, you are saying that I should watch this film?
Daisuke Beppu Definitely! Eddie Marsan is on top form in this one, along with Gemma Arterton who I adore 😍 The movie only had a budget of £900,000 which shows you don’t need a huge load of cash to make a great movie ! Very simple premise that has a lot of twists that I won’t spoil ! The DVD is available on Zavvi for £5 and it comes with plenty of bonus features 👍
Perfect Blue (Satoshi Kon), Margaret-Extended Edition (Kenneth Lonergan), You Can Count on Me (Kenneth Lonergan), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gaundry, I’m actually not sure how his name is spelled, it’s a Charlie Kaufman movie in my eyes)
I agree on The Exorcist definitely. It's odd that Rosemary's Baby is in it while The Exorcist isn't. A few other horror movies that came to mind in the collection were HAUUUUSU, Eyes Without a Face, Island of Lost Souls, and The Silence of the Lambs. Thief by Michael Mann is already in the collection but I think Heat and Collateral also deserve to be in it. I'd also like to see some of Tarantino's films, especially Kill Bill and Reservoir Dogs. It'd be cool to see more Scorsese Criterion versions like you mentioned, my personal favorites being Taxi Driver and The Aviator. Some recent movies that I think should maybe be considered down the road are films like The Place Beyond the Pines, Nightcrawler, You Were Never Really Here, Drive, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. The Place Beyond the Pines is possibly my favorite movie of the last decade, I don't think it got nearly the attention it deserved.
Dear Trey Tison, this is a fantastic comment. Thank you so much for sharing! There is so much here, and I agree with you so much about more Michael Mann, like Heat and Collateral. I would love to have a release of Heat that includes LA TAKEDOWN. And I am also in total agreement with you about having more Scorsese films! Now, of the recent films you mentioned, I know most of them, but I have to my embarrassment not seen any except for DRIVE (and that is because it is not always easy for me to watch recent releases because I don't have as much time as I used to to go out to the movies). But if you say they are good, then I will want to see them. In particular, I want to see YOU WERE NEVER REALLY HERE and NIGHTCRAWLER. and if you say that about THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES, then I must definitely seek it out!!! Thank you my friend!! And if you have any more recommendations, please let me know!
Daisuke Beppu I didn't even think of them including LA Takedown, but you're right that would be great. LA Takedown was actually up on TH-cam for a bit but got taken down.
Influential film makers like Tim Burton beetlejuice or Ed Wood, Kubricks eyes wide shut, De Palmas femme fatale. Japanese horror had a huge influence on cinema like Ringu or my favorite Audition. Hong Kong action and fantasy films are highly influential like Chinese ghost story, full contact, a better tomorrow, the killer, bride with white hair, Tsui hark, Yen Woo Ping, Ringo Lam the list goes on! We need more Hong Kong cinema on criterion but thats just wishful thinking. Anime like Wicked city and Perfect blue. Tarantino Resivordogs would be a cool upgrade
Nathan Officer I too would love to see Miike in the collection. As for Hong Kong, I am a big fan of the UK label 88 films and I have a number of their Hong Kong and Asian films, like the Bride from Hell or Five Element Ninjas, but certainly the masterpieces like Chinese Ghost Story, more Tsui Hark and Ringo Lam etc would be fantastic. I am a bit mixed on De Palmas work of late, but I am very happy to rewatch and reevaluate with an open mind... De Palma is one where I grow to like his films upon multiple viewings... so you have reminded me that I owe Femme Fatale a second watch. Thank you. Oh and I agree 100 about early Tim Burton up to Ed Wood. Frankenweenie (maybe as a supplement) or Edward Scissorhands would be great too!
Oh, that would be wonderful... to have BASIC INSTINCT in the collection. We certainly would be better off with more Verhoven films, and this film is very significant and popular as a Hollywood film. This would be such an amazing film to have... if that happened, I wonder what the reaction of the CC community would be. What do you think it would be?
I know what it should be. It should be met with excitement! Basic instincts style started a huge trend in the 90s and is still iconic to this day. The current blu-ray release has an outdated transfer with very few supplements and an extensive retrospective look on basic instinct would be awesome
This is great! And yes I agree.... It is significant in that it did seem to reignite the trend of the sexy thriller in 90s Hollywood, but that pushed the envelope in terms of sex and violence and what could be shown in an R-rated Hollywood film I think. So you are absolutely correct. Also, as far as I know, the only other Verhoven film is the now-OOP Robocop, and so I think Verhoven would be needed in the CC.
I would love a Ron Fricke boxset. Chronos - Baraka - Samsara. A visual feast in a box. Are you a fan of his films, or the qatsi films, or that style of film?
Hello Deraj! Yes I am! And that would be a phenomenal box set. I have not seen Samsara, though, and so I should get on to that immediately. However I have seen the other two, and I am also a big admirer of Reggio's Qatsi works. What an amazing suggestion.
Gotta agree with you on City of Sadness and Tie Xi Qu. City of Sadness especially. With how Edward Yang has spiked in popularity from A Brighter Summer Day and Yi Yi's inclusion it would be nice to see people take more notice of Hou. I'd also like to see Jia Zhangke's Hometown trilogy (Xiao Wu, Platform and Unknown Pleasures) included. Though I hear there are rumors of a Platform release in the works but who knows. It would make me very happy anyway, they're dying for a restoration and bluray release.
Good picks. What's the status of Before the Revolution? Also The Passenger and Aguirre would be great additions. The Other Side of the Wind and the making of it would be highly interesting...
Thank you for your comment.... you know, your comment has reminded me that the Criterion Collection is not as Bertolucci represented as it could be... of course, it does has LA COMMARE SECCA and THE LAST EMPEROR, and back in the day LAST TANGO IN PARIS was a CC laserdisc... but there could be so many more in the Criterion Collection, including BEFORE THE REVOLUTION, which is on a nice BFI dual format release. As for THE PASSENGER... Indicator just released a wonderful blu ray of this film. If CC could release this and then ZABRISKIE POINT, that would be something! As for AGUIRRE THE WRATH OF GOD, yes, the CC should have Herzog in the collection for sure (I know we have BURDEN OF DREAMS, but it is a shame that for instance FITZCARRALDO is not also included). This is one of the unfortunate blank spots of the collection, which I hope is remedied very soon! And, yes, if CC can release THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WIND, this would be such an amazing, curious release. I agree with you 100%. Thank you, Nigel!
Completely agree with you on The Devils. Some other films I'm genuinely surprised aren't in the collection yet are O Lucky Man (especially considering Lindsay Anderson already has two films in the collection), Wake In Fright, Marat/Sade, After Hours (and Bringing Out The Dead too, for that matter), The Wicker Man and Sleuth. I was also very surprised to learn that there are no Werner Herzog films in the collection, but I understand there are rights issues.
Some great picks Daisuke. Some I would like to get the criterion treatment are Braveheart, First Blood, My Way, The Sound of Music, The Shining, list could really go on and on.
I agree whole-heartedly. Humbly, I would include Bertolucci's "The Conformist" (1970), Boden & Fleck's "Half Nelson" (2006), Cuaron's "Children of Men" (2006), Tournier's "Out of the Past" (1947) and, of course, Hitchcock's "Vertigo" (1958)
Hey Daisuke! I've really been loving the content you've been producing!! I have a question, and forgive me if someone else has asked you this before, but what do you think of the lack of animated films in the Collection? Are there any particular animated films you'd like to see get the Criterion treatment?
Hi Ryan, thank you for your nice comment! I really am grateful for it. You ask a great question! So there are a few animated films in the current collection already, but certainly not enough. So I am all for animation being included with more regularity. For me, I think a film like BELLADONNA OF SADNESS would be great (though I understand that this has been released in blu by a different label in the US). Also, there is an anime precedent with Akira having been a CC laserdisc, so Akira would be welcome. I’d also love to see Brothers Quay films (which was also released on Voyager Laserdiscs in two volumes). And Svankmajer... I’d also love to see some of the early Nick Park animations get CC treatment. There is a wonderful animation laserdisc released by Voyager called Worlds Greatest Animation which features a bunch of animation shorts, and Creature Comforts is featured. I could go on, but let me ask you! What do you think should be included?
I was thinking of this yesterday while watching the secret of NIMH, fantastic planet is really cool. I’ll probably rent watership down soon. I wonder if Fritz the Cat could make it in to the collection?
I did not even think about it until your comment, but FRITZ THE CAT would be so wonderful. Now, I am not at all aware of the rights issues or other release-related issues of that film, and along with that I don't know what the overall reaction would be among the CC fan community if it indeed were released. What do you think?
I'd love to see Fritz the Cat! I think if I had to bring in one animated film to the collection it'd probably have to be Interstella 5555. I love that movie so much. I also hear so many people talk about Perfect Blue joining the collection. I've never seen it, but I want to, so it'd be cool to get as a blind buy
I think Perfect Blue is a quirky, interesting film with a captivating mystery/thriller type plot and a great sense of unconventional looking animation style. It would be great to see it in the Collection. And wow!!! Interstella 5555! What a great suggestion!!! Fantastic.
Great topic, and great video. I haven't seen all the films on your list but they all sound great for the collection. Titles like The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw, and Enter the Dragon would be fantastic with a Criterion treatment. I'd like to add the original Halloween, Jaws, and the first Friday the 13th. I think they're all horror classics by their own right. Other films I'd like to see added are: Mommie Dearest, What Ever Happened to Baby Jane, Goodfellas, Silence, and Kundun. I love the classics but it would be fantastic to see a few modern day films-that were influenced by the classics we love added to the collection. The list really is endless, I think, about films we could add. Great choices, great presentation, great topic.
Hi Movie Chatter! How are you doing lately? I should have known you would mention HALLOWEEN 😆. By the way, I saw a video you did where you had on a PJ Soles T shirt 😍 th-cam.com/video/8oSp3qhg3Oo/w-d-xo.html By the way, what is your favorite Halloween sequel? You may know this already, but HALLOWEEN was released (twice!) as a CC laserdisc, and so there is a Criterion connection. So it would not be “out of place” at all to have it back in the CC. I love your choices, and especially the Scorsese films. I think Kundun is going to be released on blu elsewhere soon and so that might not happen, but it would be nice to see for example Silence. Also, I am a big Friday the 13TH fan also!! My favorite has to be Part Five, with crazy martial arts Tommy. Is the first one your favorite?
Daisuke Beppu you caught me with the PJ Soles shirt. 😂😂 I was hoping some people would make the connection. I'm doing well, hope you are, too. I did not know about the Criterion laserdisc for Halloween but it does make sense. I think the classic horror movies need to have a place in the collection because of the influence on modern films. As for my favorite sequel- I'm really a die hard fan of the original Halloween so I'm kind of meh about the sequels. However, Rob Zombie's reboot of Halloween absolutely blew me away. I recently acquired a Blu-ray of Kundun from a seller in China. It was the first time I found one that wasn't going for over $60. It plays fine and looks amazing so hopefully, it's legit. I don't know why that hasn't gotten at least a proper Blu-ray release, and yes, Criterion. I'm the same about Friday the 13th-the original still holds first place with me but Part 5 is excellent, as you said. I love that you started the ball rolling with this topic because it's a rabbit hole. I'm sure we could all go on forever about films for the collection. So great to meet new film friends and this is how it happens. Have an amazing day. 😀🍿👍
Wow! I love how you said that about the Rob Zombie Halloween film. It is one that I absolutely loathed when I first saw it, but now that time has passed it is slowly becoming one of my favorites. I love its edge and general creepiness that is a nice contrast to the sleek and efficient and elegant horror of the first film. You have really great tastes, and you seem to be so open to a whole different range of films and styles. Thank you, and please call me Daisuke! All my friends do. Take care, and have a great day yourself! I can't wait for more of your videos! They are the best. Take care.
Daisuke, I think on another one of your videos you showed a Japanese copy of The Straight Story. I know this is a really nerdy question but does it contain a 5.1 surround sound track in English ? My German copy only has the English track in stereo and I’m very disappointed ! If so, I will seek out the Japanese blu day because I *need* Angelo’s music to engulf the room !! Thanks!
Hi Daisuke I'm going to cheat a little bit. I think ornamental hairpin by hiroshi shimizu should be released on criterion collection blu Ray. I know it's available on the eclipse series but I think it's a masterpiece and deserves the full treatment. Also children of the beehive is another masterpice that should be officially available.
I agree with you about Shimizu. Thank you so much for this. (Sorry for not replying to your comments, but I am currently on my annual holiday with my family. I should be returning to Tokyo next week. Cheers my friend and thank you so much.)
Dear Nicholas, my goodness, your comment is wonderful and it really puts me to shame. You mentioned two fantastic titles there, and I wholeheartedly agree with you. Thank you for your excellent suggestions. I remember I saw HOLY MOUNTAIN when it was re-released in the theaters in NYC some years back... it was a fantastic experience!
Nicholas Holder and ComicBook Ninja, I also agree with Herzog being in the Collection. Fitzcarraldo and Aguirre the Wrath of God are great examples. I remember I wrote a paper in college about Even Dwarfs Started Small and Stroszek, so those films would also be welcomed by me if they were in the CC. You know, speaking of Herzog, this reminds me that I never saw BAD LIEUTENANT: PORT OF CALL NEW ORLEANS but I have always been meaning to. Have any of you seen it?
If it is any indication, at one point, Facets released The Dekalog...so, hopefully, Criterion will release Kazuo Hara's Emperor's Naked Army Marches On AND Goodbye CP together in a 2 disc box. Honestly, I do not know about licensing agreements and fees but I think it would be a wise inclusion into the Criterion Collection. Thanks for bring The Devils to our attention. I think there is bit of Alejandro Jodorosky in it or the reverse.
Good point about Facets. As far as I know (and I admit to not being in any way an insider), there is no direct relationship between what has been licensed to Facets for distribution on DVD, and what has been licensed to Criterion. (In other words, I don't think it is necessarily the case that all IP that was licensed to Facets will therefore automatically get licensed to Criterion.) So, I think the issue with the Dekalog was perhaps a matter of the license term ending for Facets, and then the rights were licensed to a new licensee party (in this case, Criterion). This often happens with licensing when licensing terms expire or licenses are terminated , etc. That being said, I think it would be great to see the Kazuo Hara films released by Criterion. And a 2 disc box set would be great... but let's not stop at a 2 disc set, what about a 4 disc set (including Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 and A Dedicated Life)! That would be a great thing! Also he has a new film that was recently released on DVD in Japan here called Sennan Asbestos Disaster.
Yes, let not Criterion limit its potential Kazuo Hara acquisitions to only two films (that I know). I haven't seen Eros, Life or Asbestos. But I am seriously considering investing in the Hara book and his dvd. @@DaisukeBeppu
I would love to see the Devils in critereon! I could also see Arrow doing a release of it. I agree with the collection needing more lynch. Some his films are difficult to find. I recently ordered from Amazon a Japanese version of the straight story and I look forward to watching it.
Oh yes, you are right! I always remember seeing that Japanese blu ray around stores every now and again, but I never buy it. I really should though. Thank you for reminding me about this! This is fantastic! Yes, I could also see Arrow doing a fine presentation of the DEVILS. I think that, if the DEVILS were ever to happen, the label that manages to get its hands on it will be a hero in my eyes. Yes, Arrow would hit it out of the park, you are absolutely correct.
Tie Xi Qu looks really good, but the DVD seems extremely difficult to find unfortunately. There is a copy on eBay for $60, think that is worth it? I am not sure what the initial retail price was. Absolutely agree on The Devils. Hopefully they could find the missing footage that has eluded us forever. Criterion to me, has always been strongest with films that are important, yet not well represented on home video. Obviously I am not disparaging their releases of "popular" films, but they shine through strongest when they unearth treasures that have been forgotten to history. I love discovering films that I normally would not consider. Off the top of my head, a film I want Criterion to do would be The Plague Dogs. Since Criterion already released Watership Down, this is the same director adapting a story by the same author. The only decent release of it is the uncut version on DVD in the UK, but it looks and sounds awful. However, Shout Factory is currently working with the director Martin Rosen on a Blu-ray of it, high chances it is the uncut version too!
Oh man, what a question. First of all, you are really so articulate about the value of Criterion and its ability to release films that have not yet been released, versus releasing films that have already had healthy release histories. Another viewer Jiro Hong made the same great point... While I personally love to see films that have already been released elsewhere also be part of the CC (take the PRINCESS BRIDE for example), I also totally am behind what you say. But you say it better than I ever could. And your suggestion about the PLAGUE DOGS! This is a fantastic suggestion! And I did not know about this film and Shout Factory!!! I am always learning from you, and today is no exception to that! Now, as for Tie Xi Qu, I didn't realize that it is now only available via sites like eBay. that is a shame. I have not heard any rumors about it coming to the CC, but I don't want to suggest that you buy it for $60 on eBay and then have the CC announce that it is going to release the film. At the same time, the film is absolutely incredible and, despite its length, it has a remarkable re-watchability quality, and so owning a copy of it is really a good idea... but would I pay $60 for it? Is it possible say to get a cheaper used copy of it? $60 is a lot of money. However, if you were to buy it, you will be getting a film that is worth every penny and then some. So, it is ultimately up to you and your budget... Sorry for being a bit wishywashy with my answer.
There seems to be a good deal of footage on TH-cam of it. Think i'll watch a little bit of it there and decide from that. I would actually be interested in a video about other documentaries you would recommend/ are your favorite. Not necessarily just Criterion, but from any documentary in general. This recent clip from the BBC sparked my interest th-cam.com/video/1zqd85d68S4/w-d-xo.html I love Louis Theroux and his incredible work.
I also appreciate your comments, Zyrother. I put together a Letterboxd list of the best documentaries I have seen so far: boxd.it/1TGjk It is hard to rank them properly, but you will get the idea. All are worth seeing. I saw many of them at film festivals. I hope it helps you.
Thank you! There are some treasures in there. Many I had heard about but forgot to see/ make note of. Man On Wire is one that I've wanted to see for a while.
Zyrother what a great idea about documentaries. Let me see what I can come up with. Thank you for the suggestion! By the way, what docs would you say? At the top of my head, the one I must say is SHOAH. This is a very important one, perhaps together with NIGHT AND FOG the most important film in the CC. I have hesitated to mention it in the context of a TH-cam video thus far because I feel these should be afforded special respect and that I am still trying to clarify my own thoughts on the film in my own mind and heart. But I suppose what I can say now is that, as a piece of film, It is such a key film and one that anyone who calls himself or herself a CC fan must watch. I would go so far to say that it is required viewing. Other docs I love are for example Errol Morris films like THIN BLUE LINE or FOG OF WAR, Kazuo Hara films, the Up films, the Beatles Anthology... it is also not a doc per se, but there is the great, insightful and poignant interview that Melvyn Bragg did of Dennis Potter just before Potter died of cancer.
Dear Daisuke, I loved “Happiness” too; nice choice! Dylan Baker was particularly brilliant in his performance. Another indie movie that impressed me was “Mysterious Skin”. It would be wonderful if “Funeral Parade of Roses” and “Red Angel” were in the Criterion; are you agree? Thanx for your terrific channel. Greetings from Spain.
I would love a lot of David Finchers filmography (especially Fight Club and Social Network) but most of all a criterion of Trainspotting would be amaaaaazing.
I agree with Inland Empire. There's no legal way to watch it in HD in the US and there's no Blu Ray with good special features, so I would love to appreciate it in its full glory. I would also love Synecdoche, New York, which is my favorite Kaufman, with better extras than the current Blu Ray. There's also only one film written by Kaufman currently in the collection. My other two picks would be a Malick trilogy with To The Wonder, Song to Song, and Knight of Cups and a Maya Deren collection. Kino Lorber has a pretty good Maya Deren collection, but it's missing Witch's Cradle. I love your channel, and I definitely need to check out some of the films on this list!
Hello Tyler and thank you so much!! Those are great suggestions, and also yes, Inland Empire. I still remember the theater experience I had when I saw it in a theater in NYC upon its release. Cheers my dear friend and I hope you are well.
Greetings from England, Daisuke. I agree with you that there need to be more horror films in the Criterion Collection. I think Roman Polanski's The Tenant (1976) ought to be in there. I'd like to see Shutter Island in it. Maybe Poltergeist. The Hitcher. Halloween (1978). Assault on Precinct 13. And the grandaddy of them all, the definitive Criterion Collection release of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.
Mrs Baylock's Video Emporium thank you so much for this great list of suggestions. I agree. And by the way, Halloween was released as a Criterion LD back in the day, so it would be great to see it “return” to the Criterion Collection. And also, I love your user name!!
@@DaisukeBeppu Hahaha you're the only person who has understood its meaning! I didn't know that about Halloween. I agree that horrors and thrillers and woefully underrepresented in the Collection. I particularly like psychological horrors if you can't already tell. And I've just realised as I write this, The Omen Trilogy and The Exorcist would make for wonderful releases were they to be given the Criterion treatment - not to mention Psycho.
Definitely need on criterion: *Happiness *Welcome to the Dollhouse *Looking for Mr Goodbar *Boys in the Band *Exorcist *Ladybug Ladybug *4th Man (Paul Verhoeven) *Memories of a Geisha *Texas chainsaw massacre
Thank you for your comment. I admit that I have not had a chance at all to see PHANTOM THREAD yet, but I really want to. As for his other works (from HARD 8 up to INHERENT VICE), I really enjoyed them a lot, though I have not seen his documentary and so I cannot comment on that. In particular, I have quite a fondness for HARD 8 and MAGNOLIA, though I recognize that his later works such as THERE WILL BE BLOOD are probably more critically heralded. I think I even saw MAGNOLIA about 3 or 4 times in the theater when it was first released. I was and still am enthralled by the construction and concept of that film. Do you have a favorite film by PTA?
Daisuke Beppu I think you will really enjoy Phantom Thread. All of the films you’ve mentioned are wonderful (especially Magnolia, what a film!) I really enjoy Punch Drunk Love, Inherent Vice and The Master. The Criterion release of Punch Drunk Love is quite beautiful.
I like CC's PUNCH DRUNK LOVE as well. It is a fine release. I remember when I saw MAGNOLIA during its initial release, I did receive a bit of pushback from my cinephile friends who thought the film was weak. I totally understand that sort of criticism of the film, but I am amazed at how well it has aged over the years. And a very, very quirky and memorable moment in the film (I think you know what I am talking about) holds a lot of power even now when I rewatched it recently.
Daisuke Beppu I actually felt the same way. I thought it was pretentious. But looking back I’m amazed at how genuinely emotional and bursting with creativity the film is. It would make a wonderful Criterion release someday.
you're right Sir, the list could go on for hours and hours. I would love to see John Sayles films on any bluray (there's only 3 out of his 18 films) but especially on criterion, so Matewan, City of Hope, Limbo, Men with Guns and Passion Fish. I know where I'm going by Powell and Pressburgher. After Hours by Scorsese, one of his forgotten ones. Anything by Hal Hartley. On Dangerous Ground by Nicholas Ray. Sorry I'll stop now hehe. Great video!
You made my day. I’m a huge John sayles fan and I wish more people could see his films. Lone star would be another great addition to the collection. The thing that sets sayles apart is his writing. He creates characters you want to spend more time with, even after the credits roll. I remember one review of passion fish used the phrase ‘ effortlessly superior film-making’ and I couldn’t agree more. Sorry I tend to go on a bit when it comes to John sayles. You have a great day and thanks for the reply. You’re channel is so important. I have learned so much from you and I still have to watch so many more of your videos 😎
Again I Know Where I'm Going is not easy to locate. I got it as part of a boxset on DVD. I can understand why it's lesser known Powell and Pressburger but it's still a very good and unusual film.
Yes, Spine 1000.... This would be such a glorious thing if it were indeed to happen. THE MAGNIFICENT AMBERSONS is going to be in the CC, and so it would be so great to see CITIZEN KANE back as well. But you are going one better and suggesting a BOX SET??!!!! Oh goodness, this would be a fabulous thing. There has been a lot of Welles news in Criterion circles of late, and so perhaps something is afoot... Also, haha! "sexcapade". Is that even a thing?!! Best regards my friend.
Man, just found your TH-camaccount. Totally into it and quite jealous of your filmcloset, if I’m honest. Keep up the work and big movie love from Holland!
Thank you, Casper Paans, for your really kind comment. To be honest, my film collection is not so extensive and wide-ranging as other great collections that appear on TH-cam, but I am trying! So thank you! By the way, if you have a moment, and if you don't mind, I would love to hear some of your recommendations and suggestions for films to watch! Best regards from Tokyo.
Big fan of your videos and I’ll be watching them the upcoming weeks. I do have recommendations actually: ‘Il Conformista’ by Bernardo Bertolucci, ‘A Brighter Summer Day’ by Edward Yang (one of my favorites. Guess you’ve already seen that, looking at the video you did on al the Criterion titles from Spine 1 to 924, or something like that) and ‘Mustang’, which is a Turkish film from Deniz Gamze Ergüven and came out in 2015. Last but not least, I’d like to point out ‘Spoorloos’ or ‘The Vanishing’, as they call it in the States, which is the only Dutch film in the Criterion Collection. It’s definitely a movie to be proud of. Please let me know if you yourself have any recommendations for me. Would love to hear from you. All the best, Casper
Oh my goodness... A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY... I said it in one of my videos that it is my favorite film in the Criterion Collection. And it is. Truly a masterpiece in every sense of that word. And I am not even a great student of Taiwanese history but it achieves an even higher significance and greatness when considered through that lens. I am so happy to hear you mention that film. Edward Yang... he left this world much too soon. Incidentally, I managed to get a hold at last on his film A CONFUCIAN CONFUSION, which was released on a Japanese DVD and VHS here. You also mention IL CONFORMISTA! Well done! I too recommend that film. It is magnificent and frightening, is it not! There are moments in that film where I am actually left breathless. What an great pick you made here as well. And then the chilling, chilling SPOORLOOS or THE VANISHING. There is a key moment in that film where the main character screams out, "I am Rex Hofman!!!", and it is really, really chilling (I think you know the scene I am talking about!). My goodness. I am getting scared just thinking about this film. You bring out a great choice. But your comment now makes me realize: Is this really the only Dutch film in the current Criterion Collection? If so, that is something that really should be remedied. Do you agree? I have not seen MUSTANG, but, as I have mentioned elsewhere on this channel, I am notoriously bad with current cinema, and so as this was made in 2015 the chances are that I have not seen it. But if you recommend it, and if it is in a physical media form that I can obtain with relative ease, then I will try to get it for sure! I do have a number of recommendations, but I am not sure that I would not be able to recommend anything to you as you seem to have seen so many great films, and very likely more than me. But, perhaps could you tell me a list of some of your "favorites" (Criterion or otherwise, it is OK with me), and then I can get a better sense of what films you like and what films I might be able to recommend. How is that? It is a real pleasure for me to be able to talk to you like this! If you are on Facebook, please feel free to connect with me there as well.
Haha love the fact you liked my recommendations. I think you would love to see MUSTANG if you'd get the chance. To come back to SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING, I know exactly what you mean when you talk about that "I am Rex Hofman" scene. To tell you the truth, I thought it was simple incredible, but sadly I already knew how it would end. There's a novel called 'Het Gouden Ei' (In English it would be 'The Golden Egg') on which the movie is based. It's a very popular book in high school, because students have to read several books for the subject Literature. It's mostly popular because of the fact it doesn't have that many pages. ;) Most don't know that this incredible film was based on it. Sadly SPOORLOOS/THE VANISHING is the only film that's in the Criterion Collection (If you don't count Verhoeven's Hollywood blockbuster ROBOCOP). If I'm honest, I can see why there aren't many films from the Netherlands is this magnificent collection. It's been a debate for years among Dutch film fans, whether Belgian films are better, or not. Looking at the last couple of years, I'd definitely would say our southern neighbors make better movies though. I'd highly recommend RUNDSKOP (BULLHEAD in English) by Michaël Roskam. Great crime film and fantastic actors. I'm sure you'd love it. To come back to the fact that I've probably seen more films than you, you are most definitely wrong. I'm only 22 years old, but for four years I've been a complete film buff and trying to see as many films as possible. But thanks for pointing out a film fan, when you see one. :) Good question asking me what my favorite films are. There're soooooo many. Love myself a bit of Japanese cinema (Ozu, Kurosawa (the Master), Ichikawa), European (Bergman (favorite director), Fellini, Godard, Eisenstein, Resnais or Tarkovsky) or American (Kubrick, Malick, Cassavetes or Chaplin). These people have quite a few films in the Criterion Collection. But naming all the films I love, would take me so many hours. I'll tell you a few of my favorites (by just glancing at my movie closet) as there's so many more to discover and definitely discuss. I adore PLEIN SOLEIL (PURPLE NOON in the US) by René Clement (Wonder if you've seen this?), HIGH AND LOW by Kurosawa, PSYCHO AND REAR WINDOW by Hitchcock, WINTER LIGHT by Bergman (There hasn't been one film of his yet, which I didn't like). On the other hand I like FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF and CASABLANCA (What's not to love about these two gems?), and to be honest, I could go on for ages. Love your passion for movies and that you give a reply to everyone that comments to your videos. You treat people with true kindness. The world needs more of that. Would love to keep in touch and discuss many more movies with you. All the best from Holland and keep uploading great videos! Casper
Casper, wow. Simply wow. if you don't mind, I would like to share some of your comments in a future video I may do, to highlight your comments especially regarding Dutch cinema as represented (or underrepresented) in the CC. Is that OK? this is really great. I am pleasantly surprised that you are a young guy at only 22! My goodness. You already have seen more great films at 22 than I did at that age that is for sure. I am not quite 40 yet, but I am approaching it! Anyway, thank you also for that excellent list of films! Yes, I have seen the ones you have mentioned, and i agree with you completely about how each of them is really great. I think FERRIS BUELLER is essential viewing. And I am happy to hear that you have not encountered a Bergman film you did not like. To be honest, I have yet to discuss Bergman because I feel that I am not yet intellectually equipped to talk about him. Maybe soon I will feel more confident about that, but in the meantime, I too share your admiration for Bergman films. I love Vertigo and the works of OZU, as well as A BRIGHTER SUMMER DAY (have you seen it?). Also, do you know the works of Victor Erice? You probably have seen THE SPIRIT OF THE BEEHIVE and EL SUR already, but if not, I strongly recommend them because I think you will simply fall in love with them. I too can go on and on and on...!!!
I love HOME ALONE! I saw it in the theater when it was released. It was a lot of fun. I saw HOME ALONE 2 also in the theater. Cheers and great suggestion.
I'm really holding out hope for The Trial. It is in dire need of the deluxe treatment. Sorcerer would be glorious in the collection. One of my deep wishes would be THX-1138 coming to the collection but if Lucas were involved, it would be his 2004 version and that would be sad.
Oh wouldn't it great to see the Trial in the collection. And yes give it the proper super treatment it deserves. Also, I love your suggestion of THX-1138.
Yes, me too. That is my favorite Tarkovsky film... it makes me so emotional when I watch it on my DVD copy. With ANDREI RUBLEV coming back very soon, and with the recent release of STALKER, if we can get THE MIRROR into the collection, I would be so happy.
Wonderful ideas. Personally, I would like Criterion to dive more deeply into silents, both popular and epic. How about a CC package of Vidor’s THE CROWD, or both versions of Hitch’s BLACKMAIL. Gish in BROKEN BLOSSOMS or THE WIND. LADY WINDERMERES FAN. CITY GIRL. Maybe a collection of shorts or serials, similar to the Golden age of TV box. Thanks for mentioning GREED. If only!
Yes, you are so right. I think the Eureka MoC and KINO obviously do the great work with silent films and blus and DVDs, but it would be so great to see more in the Criterion Collection. And while it is not wholly 100% silent, the Blackmail release as you suggest it would be fantastic. I have the Criterion Collection Laserdisc with the sound version, but it would be fantastic to have a good blu ray release of this film. Oh gosh, BROKEN BLOSSOMS!!! What I would give to have that in the CC! Do you have the Eureka MoC silent film titles? And yes, GREED... you say it better than I could... "IF ONLY!!" My goodness... what a great day that would be if this could be "properly" released.
Daisuke Beppu I have more Kino than Eureka because of the limitations of my disc player. But SUNRISE and CITY GIRL are real prizes! The latest Kino’s that captured me were their collection of LES VAMPIRES and FANTOMAS. Gems of surreal suspense. I may misunderstand the complete history of the two versions of BLACKMAIL, but I do have a DVDR copy that seems completely silent, and I’ve had the opportunity to see it live a couple times with the alloy Orchestra accompanying. But perhaps there are sync sound portions in that first version and I just didn’t realize it. Thanks so much for your heartfelt recommendations. I now have 3 new movies on my must-see-next list.
Hello Salim! I love these suggestions of yours. I mentioned in a previous video that because of my current schedule and family commitments, I rarely have time to go to the cinema properly to watch recent releases, and so I have yet to see Moonlight or Call Me By Your Name, although I want to very much. So for that reason alone I hope that they come to the Criterion Collection. I assume that you have seen these films. Do you recommend them?
I just thought of another title that would be great and would fit in the collection is the 1996 Richard Linklater film sUburBia. He is obviously a director they adore and this title has never been available above vhs at least here in America. I do have a ‘bootleg DVD’ I bought off eBay but this film would be a great addition to the collection and would be a great one to expose to more people.
Hello and thank you so much my friend for your comment to this video. I don't have this title, but I found an entry on Amazon US for a DVD. Is this a "bootleg"? It indicates having been released in January 2018, from Warner Archive. Is this a legitimate release? www.amazon.com/SubUrbia-Jayce-Bartok/dp/B0788XQ679
Ahh. NO warner archive does burn on demand so it must be a legit release that I somehow missed. My copy though is older than that so I am confident mine is a “bootleg” I will look into the Warner archive release. Thank you for the information and I hope you have a great holiday season. Thank you for the great videos.
I have some Criterion titles and they are very well presented, but there are other boutique companies I think do a better job, Arrow video, second sight films, and my personal favourite Eureka masters of cinema. People say psychical media is slowing down but I think its very exciting with companies like Criterion and other boutique labels that find markets with films from all genres and tastes.
Hello Gloomy Vale, and thank you so much for your great comment. It is really excellent. And totally, I get it. I think also that overall, yes, the physical media market seems to be very strong, at least from my vantage point. I am not sure how long it will last, but overall, the accessibility and availability are outstanding.
I'm a longtime fan of Lynch (I saw Blue Velvet at 6 or 7 on VHS). I went to see Mulholland Drive twice when it came out. I walked out of Inland Empire. Lynch is my favourite filmmaker but I hate Inland Empire. I have re-watched it since and I stand by my decision to walk out. It was also a really uncomfortable theater. You have to be physically comfortable to endure Inland Empire.
Thank you so much for this. And I appreciate this very much, because, as you say, you are a big fan of Lynch, and yet you have the reaction to Inland Empire that you say you did. I respect this very much. In many ways, it has links to Lynch's overall body of work, but at the same time there are a number of unique aspects that might not necessarily resonate with everyone. That is totally fair.
One thing I’ll love to see in the criterion collection are more Mexican films. There are many (especially from its golden age) that are great which unfortunately are unknown to most film lovers, cinephiles etc. I think it’s due to lack of proper restoration, distribution, and translation. Some of them are in need of a proper restoration and presentation such as in a blu ray, but unfortunately there is not. The only reason why the films have not disappeared and I’ve come to be exposed to them and enjoy enjoy is thanks to TH-cam (some of them with good quality also). But hopefully maybe one day criterion would consider these films and started to restore them and add them to the collection; so that others may come to know this cinema which most of the time gets overlooked. PS: if there is one Mexican film I’ll love to see in the collection is Macario (1960) which is considered to be the greatest Mexican film of all time and was the first Mexican film to earn a Oscar nomination for best foreign film. If that happens I’ll be extremely happy.
Thank you so much for this wonderful comment and yes I agree with you, and for me it would be great because I am not such a good expert regarding the cinema of Mexico so it would be really wonderful to see many titles. Cheers my friend.
@@DaisukeBeppu ¡de nada! If interested I’ll leave you some links below of some of my favorite Mexican films that I’ve found on TH-cam with English subtitles I’ll hope you’ll enjoy them to. th-cam.com/video/UqoyadSFmvw/w-d-xo.html This is Los Olvidados by Luis Buñuel which is often regarded as one of Mexico’s greatest films of all time. th-cam.com/video/cxU7DdqT5aQ/w-d-xo.html this El Esqueleto de la Señora Morales (1960) (The Skeleton of Mrs Morales) by Rogelio A. González it is a black comedy/horror film which is considered one of Mexico’s best horror films. th-cam.com/video/iBKblP0NOIs/w-d-xo.html This Ánimas Trujano (1961) (also known in English as The Important Man) by Ismael Rodríguez. This film stars Toshiro Mifune in one of his unknown/underrated films (he did a great job btw despite the language barrier) this film has often been listed in various critics lists of the 100 best Mexican films. th-cam.com/video/QYt64uGC9Pk/w-d-xo.html Finally Macario(1960) by Roberto Gavaldón. This was the first Mexican film nominated for the Oscar for best foreign film but lost to The Virgin Spring by Ingmar Bergman; similar to some of Bergman’s works, this film shares similar themes to The Seventh Seal. This film is regularly considered as the greatest Mexican film ever made. This is one of many Mexican films I’ll love to see in The Criterion Collection hopefully it come true one day. PS: if you are able to view them and if you wish and if you have the time, I’ll like for you to share your thoughts on them by way of your TH-cam channel. Thanks.
No Yorgos Lanthimos in the Criterion collection yet - an original modern film maker with his own style that needs to be corrected asap. starting with Dogtooth. Citizen Kane is an oversight. Pleased to say Husbands did make it. and that new Bruce Lee collection so your wishes have partially come true. Good to reflect and watch old wishlist videos to see what has changed.
Thank you so much for this comment! Yes, this was an older video and so as you say it is really nice to see how things have turned out years later. Cheers my friend.
Great Video! I want these films on Criterion blu-ray HUD Inside Moves What's Eating Gilbert Grape Happiness Diner Cruising After Hours Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore The Color of Money I Stand Alone All The Real Girls Paper Moon Star 80 Dear Zachary The Trial Blue Collar
Dear Guy Fieri, hello, and what a FANTASTIC LIST!!! I am particularly impressed with INSIDE MOVES!!! Wow!!! And of course, AFTER HOURS!!!! And regarding I STAND ALONE, I really like Gaspar Noe films, and your comment reminds me of that. Am I right in recalling that Gaspar Noe was actually in a Criterion Collection closet video? I have not seen ALL THE REAL GIRLS, but this is directed by David Gordon Green, right? So there is the Criterion Collection connection with GEORGE WASHINGTON, but the fact that you mention ALL THE REAL GIRLS makes me very curious about this film! Thank you!!! Wow!!! What a fantastic list! Do you have any more films that you would like to see in the CC? Best regards.
Daisuke Beppu Yes, Gasper Noe had a great Criterion closet video. Here are some more I'd like to see from Criterion. hope you like these recommendations aswell. Ordinary People (beautiful film) Man on the Moon (great Jim Carrey) Bukowski: born into this (great documentary) Snow Angels (more david gordon green❤) Brewster McCloud (filmed near my house) The Elephant Man (great Lynch film) Martyrs 2008 (VERY Scary) Ringu 1998 (VERY Scary) Love Liza Twilight Zone the Movie
Wow!!!! What an absolutely amazing and fascinating list. I have not seen LOVE LIZA!! Or the BUKOWSKI documentary! What can I say here... there is so much to say... wow... but, I suppose that if I were to start, it would have to be THE TWILIGHT ZONE THE MOVIE!!! This film scared the $%&T out of me when I was a little kid ("Do you want to see something REALLY scary??!!"). This would be an intriguing release by the Criterion Collection. Also, I should have mentioned THE ELEPHANT MAN but I didn't! That is why I love these comments... great viewers like you can remind me about the wealth of films that have yet to be in the CC but should.
Another great list (2 of them, in fact, Guy Fieri). All are highly recommended and would be a welcome addition to the CC. I wish I worked there and could make it happen.
Gummo should get the criterion treatmen... also a Zulawski Box-Set with Third Part, Diabel and On The Silver Globe would be the most epic release... Jacques Rivette is also short in the collection... The Hourglass Sanatorium by Wojciech Jerzy Has, also a good one in my opinion... there is a movie called Hunting Season in Bavaria, one of Haneke's favoriete films, would make a great obscure gem in the criterion collection, I believe it deserves more attention... Far better than most of the german new wave stuff is Roland Klick's action-cinema, who would make an interesting contrast to Wenders and Fassbinder more intellectual approach to filmmaking
The Beatles' Help and Yellow Submarine A huge number of Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho martial arts films including Magnificent Butcher with also it's original English dubbing not the dub version made by 20th century Fox. Just about every martial arts film that was used in that documentary hosted by John Saxon Monty Python film complete collection Bob Roger's Rainbow War the number 1 greatest live action short ever made My Fair Lady Dr. Dolittle Terrence Young's Black Tights The Great Race And a box set of the short film series Speaking of Animals Also a box set of all movies The Three Stooges did including Stop, Look and Laugh And Laurel and Hardy's Utopia Also and Audrey Hepburn collection would be interesting
Hello DeanHNZ, and thank you so much. This is a great selection of suggested titles! I saw The Apostle with Robert Duvall in the theater when it was initially released. This is such a great gem of a film I think, and Duvall is superb as always. Cheers my friend.
The Trial finally has a Criterion release, 5 years after this video.
"Citizen Kane and Criterion... it's like coffee and apple pie."
Well said, my friend!
Agent Cooper would be proud!
Thank you! Yes, Coop was definitely on my mind. Thank you. To paraphrase a phrase spoken by Cooper in the limited series, rollzroyce21, I am witness to the fact that you have a heart of gold. Best regards.
Twin Peaks Box - the entire series with TPFWWM, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and First Reformed.
Excellent suggestions, and so thank you so much! I agree completely.
We have very similar taste haha
Thank you SJSFilms! By the way, if you are on Facebook, drop me a line anytime. We can talk there as well. Best regards.
That is great!!! Yes, it is such a brilliant work that needs a special edition release one day hopefully soon.
Daisuke Beppu I envy you, The Holy Mountain is an experience. El Topo is also a masterpiece.
Thank you very much for this. I apologize for the lateness of my reply my friend!
Now Lionsgate seems to control SC catalog in the US, but they don't care for 'old' and/or 'foreign' films.)
If Criterion releases The Emperor's Naked Army Marches On (1987), I hope they make it a double feature with the director's another major achievement, Extreme Private Eros: Love Song 1974 (1974).
Oh, and let me add... I totally did not know about ATOMIC CAFE's release until you pointed it out to me. Thank you for this!
Very interesting. Incidentally the film NOSTALGHIA was once a Criterion Laserdisc.
Tremors would be an instant buy for me
I was hoping Scream Factory or Criterion would release this one because the Universal Blu-ray is pretty terrible.
Sinbad (Szindbád 1971)
Nobody’s Daughter (Árvacska 1976)
Édes Anna (1958)
Opium: Diary of a Madwoman (Ópium: Egy elmebeteg nő naplója 2007)
Demimonde (Félvilág 2015)
The following titles are also personal favorites but some of them are mainstream cinema and others just purely entertaining.
An American Rhapsody (2001) - This movie is a coproduction with the US and probably the most known on this list, although it is very underrated in my opinion.
Kincsem (2017)
Children of Glory (2006)
Poligamy (2009)
Chameleon (2008)
Also you could check out the short movie Mindenki (2016 Sing)
Thank you for your interest!
I'm hoping for
1) all of the World Cinema Project titles like Muna Moto, Soleil Ô or The Night of Counting the Years.
2) the films of Hans-Jürgen Syberberg (Parsifal, Hitler: A Film from Germany, Karl May)
3) The Last Wave by Peter Weir
4) Tropical Malady by Apichatpong Weerasethakul
5) Ode to Nothing by Dwein Baltazar
6) Himala by Ishmael Bernal
7) a Wakamatsu box set
8) The Watermelon Woman by Cheryl Dunye
9) The Silences of the Palace by Moufida Tlatli
10) Landscape Suicide by James Benning
11) India Song by Marguerite Duras
12) Workingman's Death by Michael Glawogger
13) When the Tenth Month Comes by Dang Nhat Minh
14) This Night I'll PossessYour Corpse and At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul by José Mojica Marins
15) Girlfriends by Claudia Weill
16) Twenty Years Later by Eduardo Coutinho
17) Araya by Margot Benacerraf
18) Sacrificed Youth by Zhang Nuanxin
19) Eve's Bayou by Kasi Lemmons
and
20) The Last Faust by Carlos Reichenbach
Plus I'm desperately waiting for the Blu-ray releases of
1) Come and See
2) Streetwise
3) The Meetings of Anna
and
4) The Ascent
Hello Felix, and thank you so much for your comment and for your kind words and for your excellent, excellent list. What a great list you provide.
I have not done any of these "wishlist" videos in a long time, but I would like to do so, hopefully very soon, especially after receiving such great comments and lists like the ones you provided. Thank you so much for your kind and inspiring comment!
Please do! That would be wonderful. It's always a pleasure to hear your thoughts on this topic.
I'd love to see more films in the collection that have no Blu-ray release so far because Criterion could really bring these titles back to life and give them a larger audience.
my theory is that criterion is going to do something big for the upcoming spine number 1000. And that something is Citizen Kane.
paul casino yes... I agree with your theory. Granted, I can understand if someone were to say that the “00” spine numbers are
Not always allocated to “great” films (like say Spine no.
Citizen Kane or 2001 would be my guess, or maybe they make 2001 spine 1002 (which is 2001 in reverse ha!)
Nope, they did a collection of Godzilla movies for case 1000.
@@DaisukeBeppu For me the films that should have this release in the criterion collection are...
Goodfellas
Casino
The red violin
Edward scissorhands
Gladiator
Disney's the lion king
and
DreamWorks the Prince of Egypt
Incredible collection sir! I’m about 90 spines short of completion, but you put me to shame! Love the content! Keep it coming!
One film and one film only......
FREDDY GOT FINGERED 🤘
Haha! You already know how I feel about this one!
I managed ten minutes of that before the pain became too break to overcome.
Thank you so much!!! Great suggestions.
Hi Daisuke, I’m really enjoying your channel. There are many great suggestions here, but I’d like to see the films of Fatih Akin in the Criterion Collection, Especially “Head On” and “The Edge of Heaven”.
Thank you very much! I am very sorry for the lateness of my reply.
I hope you are well and once again, thank you so much for your comment.
I’m thinking about your question. 😁🇳🇱
Hello and wow... thank you so much for your great comment. This is really excellent. And you are very very kind.
Cheers and I hope you are well.
Of course, I too love Gemma Alterton! I will definitely get it. Thank you for this recommendation, X24! You are the best!
Daisuke Beppu Anytime 👍
Would you mind it if I mentioned you X24RIDER and your recommendation of The Disappearance of Alice Creed in a future video I plan to do?
Perfect Blue (Satoshi Kon), Margaret-Extended Edition (Kenneth Lonergan), You Can Count on Me (Kenneth Lonergan), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Michel Gaundry, I’m actually not sure how his name is spelled, it’s a Charlie Kaufman movie in my eyes)
ALSO Ordinary People needs to be on there. I can never find the blu-ray anywhere. James White would be nice as well
Thank you very much for your excellent list.
Really? I didn't know that! Well, that is more reason then for Criterion to release it together with HEAT!!
Femme Fatale is so much fun its really stylized trash but thats why I like it i'd also love to see Verhoevens Basic instinct in the collection
Thank you so much for your wonderful comment. This is really great and I agree with you.
Hello and thank you so much for this. This is a great list you suggest. Thank you very much Ned D.
Some great picks Daisuke. Some I would like to get the criterion treatment are Braveheart, First Blood, My Way, The Sound of Music, The Shining, list could really go on and on.
Oh man, what great choices. I think this is the first time I am hearing First Blood, but I agree with you. I really like that one!
@@DaisukeBeppu First Blood does a good job of showing how the public thought of the veterans then, and the stress they were under.
Thank you so much for the comment, Greg. Excellent.
By the way, I saw a video you did where you had on a PJ Soles T shirt 😍 th-cam.com/video/8oSp3qhg3Oo/w-d-xo.html
By the way, what is your favorite Halloween sequel?
Thanks!
Thank you, and my Japanese blu ray has the English track in 5.1.
Daisuke Beppu thanks! That settles it, I must track it down.
Daisuke Beppu no worries. Enjoy your trip. I'm going to Portugal tomorrow but I'll still be watching from time to time.
How about Lone Star, Leaving Las Vegas, Ladybug,Ladybug and Requiem For A Dream?
I agree and I applaud your choices and in particular Ladybug Ladybug.
I agree with your picks! I also wish Aguirre: The Wrath of God and The Holy Mountain would find their way into the collection.
Fitzcarraldo as well since they already have Burden of Dreams about the making of that film.
Yes, this is a good point.
Daisuke Beppu I’ve only seen the Abel Ferrara version of Bad Lieutenant. I am interested to see what Herzog would do with subject matter like that.
Dear Daisuke,
I loved “Happiness” too; nice choice!
Thank you so much Carlos!! And oh gosh, those would be really exciting and bold choices if they could get Criterion releases.
Yes! More Todd Solondz! Happiness was one of my first DVDs I really love welcome to the dollhouse.
Seth!! It is great to see you here. I didn't know you are a Todd Solondz fan also! We have many things in common.
Definitely need on criterion:
*Happiness
*Welcome to the Dollhouse
*Looking for Mr Goodbar
*Boys in the Band
*Exorcist
*Ladybug Ladybug
*4th Man (Paul Verhoeven)
*Memories of a Geisha
*Texas chainsaw massacre
That is a great list. And yes, especially since Life During Wartime is already currently in the collection.
An Eclipse series set with the early works of Lasse Hallström would be great.
This is a great idea!
Great picks! What do you think about the work of Paul Thomas Anderson?
You said it better than I ever could. This is a great comment. Thank you.
you're right Sir, the list could go on for hours and hours.
SOLITARY RONIN FILMS I agree with you about John Sayles. I would also add Lone Star. What do you think 😃
Haha sexcapade, sounds like quite the steamy genre. Great choices Daisuke! Just imagine it, spine #1000 The entire Orson Welles filmography boxset
I do have recommendations actually: ‘Il Conformista’ by Bernardo Bertolucci, ‘A Brighter Summer Day’ by Edward Yang
(one of my favorites.
All the best,
Casper
It's mostly popular because of the fact it doesn't have that many pages. ;)
Most don't know that this incredible film was based on it.
Good question asking me what my favorite films are.
Home alone 1 should be in the collection yes it's super popular but it changed what Christmas films could be making it an important film in history
100% agree! Texas Chain Saw Massacre for sure! Would like to see them take on Jean Pierre Jeunet and more from Stanly Kubrick. Thank you!
Thank you very much, Lao Che. Also, thank you for mentioning Jeunet! Yes, this is an excellent suggestion and I totally agree with you.
The tenant ( Le locataire) from Polanski should be on Criterion
Thank you very much, and I apologize for the lateness of my reply on your comment here. What a very interesting idea!
I’m so excited about the MIRROR rumors!
The Crowd would be especially welcome. I had to struggle to find even a DVD - I ended up with a Spanish release.
Great picks!!!
I have some ideas as well but would like to throw in just a couple and very recent: Moonlight and Call Me By Your Name :D
"Clean" -- Olivier Assayas (Director). Maggie Cheung.
"Odyssey 2002" Wong Kar Wai (Producer). Tony Leung Chu Wai, Faye Wong, Chang Chen, Vicki Zhao.
Thank you.
In case I have not said it before: "MEET JOHN DOE" should be in the Criterion Collection. It's in the public domain, so why not? IMHO
A fantastic suggestion. I love that film.

This is Los Olvidados by Luis Buñuel which is often regarded as one of Mexico’s greatest films of all time.

this El Esqueleto de la Señora Morales (1960) (The Skeleton of Mrs Morales) by Rogelio A. González it is a black comedy/horror film which is considered one of Mexico’s best horror films.

This Ánimas Trujano (1961) (also known in English as The Important Man) by Ismael Rodríguez. This film stars Toshiro Mifune in one of his unknown/underrated films (he did a great job btw despite the language barrier) this film has often been listed in various critics lists of the 100 best Mexican films.

Finally Macario(1960) by Roberto Gavaldón.
I want these films on Criterion blu-ray
HUD
Inside Moves
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Happiness
Diner
Cruising
After Hours
Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
The Color of Money
I Stand Alone
All The Real Girls
Paper Moon
Star 80
Dear Zachary
The Trial
Blue Collar
Ordinary People (beautiful film)
Man on the Moon (great Jim Carrey)
Bukowski: born into this (great documentary)
Snow Angels (more david gordon green❤)
Brewster McCloud (filmed near my house)
The Elephant Man (great Lynch film)
Martyrs 2008 (VERY Scary)
Ringu 1998 (VERY Scary)
Love Liza
Twilight Zone the Movie
One i forgot to mention is Shotgun Stories by Jeff Nichols. Great film thats OOP on DVD.
There should be a criterion for The Searchers , Casablanca , Citizen Kane , and Isle of Dogs ( because every other wes anderson film is on criterion
thank you very much for the comment. Great suggestions!
I'd love to see William freidkin repped in the criterion collection with the inclusion of To Live or Die, also Bug!
Great choices my friend!
@@DaisukeBeppuWe agree re: Sorcerer; it would be a real feather in the cap of Criterion collection.
Hello TheClebes, and thank you so much for these great suggestions.
Old video, but I'm surprised Criterion hasn't concluded at least one Marx Brothers title. Particularly A Night at the Opera.
A great point, especially since Criterion released that film as a laserdisc back in the day.
They did Bruce Lee, and Godzilla. I'd love to see them do a criterion Harryhausen collection.
Wow... great idea!!
On a silver Globe
Hello Stefano my friend!! Thank you so much!!!!
James Gray should be on Criterion
Same here.... Please accept my apologies for being late with my reply. Thank you for this suggestion. I think that is a great idea also!!
They should do a charlie kaufman box set
Question would be if it would include all of the films he wrote and directed or either or
That would be a very interesting set!! Great idea.
The Beatles' Help and Yellow Submarine
A huge number of Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho martial arts films including Magnificent Butcher with also it's original English dubbing not the dub version made by 20th century Fox. Just about every martial arts film that was used in that documentary hosted by John Saxon
Monty Python film complete collection
Bob Roger's Rainbow War the number 1 greatest live action short ever made
My Fair Lady
Dr. Dolittle
Terrence Young's Black Tights
The Great Race
And a box set of the short film series Speaking of Animals
Also a box set of all movies The Three Stooges did including Stop, Look and Laugh
And Laurel and Hardy's Utopia
Also and Audrey Hepburn collection would be interesting

Jacobs ladder
The warriors

Groundhog day
Hello DeanHNZ, and thank you so much. This is a great selection of suggested titles! I saw The Apostle with Robert Duvall in the theater when it was initially released. This is such a great gem of a film I think, and Duvall is superb as always. Cheers my friend.
