  • Bach “12 Short Preludes” or “12 Little Preludes” are ideal study pieces for intermediary pianists. In this video I play Prelude 5 in 3 different ways.
Download sheet music (free) from IMSLP Music Library.

The order of “12 Short Preludes” differs between editions. In this video series, the 12 Preludes are ordered in the way they are traditionally performed and recorded.

This was one of pieces of Bach I firstly learned, and I loved the composer since.

I can think of very few people in which the marriage of the craft and art of music is happier than in you and your piano playing, Mr. Barton. Your renditions of Bach are always so thoughtful and refreshing. Warm greetings from Denmark.

Very good. This piece reminds me of a rainy weather. Not stormy, but rainy.

I'm trying to learn this. I'm SO pokey at it. I got a book of Preludes for Christmas. First time I've ever stoically said to myself, "I am going to learn a Bach peice." As I thumbed through the book I narrowed in on this one. I have no idea why. My last success was "Graceful Ghost" by George Winston. I got to where I can pull off my own version of that. I thought I'd fly through Bach after that but I'm finding its very technical which I am enjoying thoroughly. So glad for this demonstration here to get the sound and feel down.

Great job! Your hands look so relaxed even though they move so fast. Spellbinding.

I love playing this! When I first learned this I was only a few months in and it made me feel like a real pianist! I personally perform the piece legato.
Edit: I can't wait to hear your version of the F Major little prelude. That's my favorite one to play.

You were "only a few months in" in playing the piano when you learnt this?!
Gosh, I have started more than 3 years ago, and now I am finally ready for stepping up to this. I have to mention that I am totally self-taught, but I don't think that it makes any difference. This piece is for intermediary students, not for beginners that are "only a few months in", usually.
So, congratulations for mastering the art so fast! 💪

Good playing Paul! I like the the first interpretation the most ! Ithink that piece needs speed otherwise it is too slow for the melodic structure. It could be lost Perfect articulation! Did you make it and the phrasing, the dynamic and ornamentic or was it made by another editor.

Again, like in the othet prelude, I am not clear what you mean with "moderato". The first rendition sounds like a nippy Allegro. The third one perhaps is "moderato", but you rate it as "slow".
The time signature is 3/4, how could this be?
In any case, very nice, especially the second and most of all the third. The first one is too fast for my taste.

  •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Personally, I don't like either of these three interpretations, because they all have the same mistake: they sound like they are in 6/8 in the beginning. It is important to make the 3/4 measure obvious, and this is done by either slight accents > _ > _ > _ (instead of > _ _ > _ _ ) or by altering legato and staccato: _ . _ . _ . (definitely not _ _ . _ _ .). I prefer the latter, but both are perfectly acceptable. What is not acceptable, in my opinion, is to make it sound like 6/8.
Other than that, it's played flawlessly, but I cannot get past this detail.

    • @oneirdaathnaram1376
      @oneirdaathnaram1376 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting remark.
I tend to play it like a 6/8, but that's obviously not how it's meant to be. 🤨
