I was kind of worried about whether they'd handle Izzy's disability tactfully or not, but I really think they did, it was sweet to see. like he doubts his usefulness and worth at first. I think partially because of the leg and partially because he's finally cut himself off from Ed for good. But the crew never doubts him, not once. Their gift to him is all about embracing this new part of him and making it into a symbol. Making it a power. And I think that's the moment Izzy finally realizes himself that the crew does care and want him there. On an unrelated note, I kind of want a back patch with a unicorn on it for my denim jacket :')
I'm happy at seeing the identity crisis trope with Izzy. He says "I mean, what even are you?" drunkenly to his own reflection. This season confirms what many of us suspected, that Izzy and Ed have been together for a very long time. Who is he without Blackbeard? Izzy's rotting leg can be seen as a metaphor for his and Ed's relationship: incredibly important, but damaged and rotting, must be severed in order to heal. The crew make - and metaphorically ARE - the new leg for Izzy. Of course, aside from the metaphor, losing a limb - especially if your life revolves around being physically capable - is enough to induce and identity crisis. And Izzy is REALLY proud of being a good pirate.
I didn't expect Izzy's part of the episode to get to me that much either. But the poor guy had been through so much in such a short amount of time that he deserves to be loved and healed. And I love that Olu and Jim are back together it seems like. I really hope that this season shows more of their relationship.
This was an INCREDIBLE episode and did not go where I thought it would, well bar the headbutt you called in the last episode. Even though you said it would come earlier I knew when it didn't it would come at the beginning. Gotta agree that Izzie's redemption arc has been amazing and the crew coming together to make a leg for him. I'm glad they didn't move away or avoid the trauma of the crew that had been with Blackbeard. I can't believe they had Stede say ILU!? So many things with this fantastic series. TO THE NEW UNICORN!!! Ahhh that part almost killed me. Izzy becoming part of the family, finding worth and love through the crew. Honestly don’t think he’s ever been shown that sort of kindness in his entire life, and here the crew is, even after several negative experiences with Izzy showing him that he has worth despite his disability or allegiance to Blackbeard (or lack there of). That he is a beautiful creature who still has good to do. I think seeing Anne and Mary’s relationship dynamics are meant to reflect what a relationship built on “whims” is mean to look like. They’re impulsive, prone to hurting each other as a love language, and don’t have any boundaries when it comes to including others in their drama. I think it’s important for Ed and Stede to see that “whim-proned” relationships can be toxic and hurt the ppl around them. I’m a little surprised at how quickly Ed was ready to forgive, but I think there’s a lot more healing that needs to be done on both sides to be able to grow stronger as a unit. I absolutely love that the crew, especially roach, wee John and Pete, being the ones to be like we need a safe space and trying to talk it out as a crew, despite Stede not being there. STEDE HAS RUBBED OFF ON THEM OMG. Just such a full circle moment. Also how are we not talking about wee John knitting as a way of coping haha I want him to make them all little sweaters and beanies! I’m so excited for the next episode reaction. Literally this show makes me insane and I love how much joy it brings others 🫶
One of the tattoos on Ed’s arm is a hangman game where it spells out IS_ _ _ _ , which could absolutely be Israel, historical Izzy’s full name and presumably the character’s as well. Someone pointed out that when Izzy says “Who am I to you?” he appears to be looking at the part of Ed’s arm where that tattoo is.
It makes perfect sense that Ed didn't look for Stede. Ed doesn't think he's lovable and he wasn't capable of believing anything but "Stede doesn't love me, so of course he left". There was no other option in his mind.
They have very complementary strengths for me personally. I like the ensemble and their subplots way more in OFMD, but find the central relationship far more compelling in GO.
Such a wholesome episode to come off the angst and tragedy of the first 3! I'm so sad we only have 8 episodes this season, I could watch a whole 10 more slice-of-life episodes based on these pirates just healing together 😭 Great reaction as always

I was yelling at my tv for Stede to tell Ed the whole story of that night, but at least they started talking and healing 🥰 I definitely disliked Izzy in s1, but goddamn it, Con was always stellar and in s2 it's been just an incredible journey, even for me. I still can't tell if that ending with Buttons was legit or if he got grabbed by someone 😅 Can't wait to see your reaction to ep 5! When I started this show last year it became my favourite piece of media and the only thing that's come close is good omens. I saw the first season back in 2019, but it was lagging a bit behind for me until they dropped s2 and went canon, too 😅 They're both so near and dear to my heart 💜🏳️🌈🏴☠️💜🏳️🌈😇🐍
I really love Stede this season - his character development has been so good. It’s good to see him wiser and able to learn from his mistakes. Izzy’s story might just be stealing the show.
I went to the dentist with my sister in SE London about 2 months ago and guess who was in the waiting room as we left...Fucking Izzy! We tried to sneakily take a picture as we left as we didn't want to go up and ask him for one. I wish I had now :(
