How I miss Fred. I was introduced to the glory of organ music during his time at Riverside Church. He gave us the best of this remarkable instrument. He gave his gift to the end. It will always be with us. As will Fred Swann.

Fred swan was tops in service playing. He had a naturally creative ability that even some of the greatest organist of the world do not. His gift is inate. He drama is not high theater. It is in his DNA. I miss him and gifts to this day. Bruce

What an amazing collection of great hymns played as only Fred Swann could do with his superb arrangements on truly an outstanding organ. It is a thrilling offering to the Lord Himself. It is quite distressing to learn that this magnificent instrument and the CC itself have fallen on such troubled times with the bankruptcy and the organ not being maintained. However many churches all over North America and Europe are experiencing the same downturn, with church doors closing regularly.

    • @Steff2929again
      @Steff2929again  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Sounds reasonable. It was intentionally built with a shortened nave and widened transept to bring the seats closer to the chancel, creating a sense of intimacy in spite of the colossal dimensions, and to facilitate TV-recordings. It's main purpose was after all to serve as permanent television studio.

Whereas the the organ has not been used the way it has been in the past, the organ curators have done an incredible job with a very limited budget keeping her in working order. Yes, there was damage to the organ due to water damage but parts are on hand to repair that when the roof is fixed. This is thanks to a wonderful curator team that has gone above and beyond keeping Hazel up and running. There is no doubt that she is in need of a major overhaul, she is turning 30 fairly soon.

These are great hymns and played absolutely brilliantly and majestically by Fred. I will respectfully disagree with you and boldly state that this will NOT be the last time they are played in the Crystal Cathedral. We have used all these hymn tunes in the Catholic Church many times. We may seldom if at all though hear Fred's arrangements of these due to copyright rules, however the hymn tunes will go on. BRAVO FRED!!!!!!!

It's great to see a few different eras of the mighty Hazel Wright Organ. The photos from 7:44 to 8:18 were from the 80s or so, the south gallery had no Montre Le Tour pipes in front of the case. Great playing from Mr. Swann!

My alma matter, O.U. Norman, started an organ program a few years ago in the college of Music. They acquire and restore old church, theatre, or municipal organs. The students wind up with a BA in Music in Organ Building. Its fantastic to see the pipe and console shop full of projects. They also cover pipe manufacturing which is fast becoming a lost art.

+Burt Ward My old parish, Our Lady of Loretto in Redford Mich, is no longer viable but the had a wonderful 10 rank Wicks organ that I played many times..You should call the Archdiocese of Detroit to see if you could rescue the old gal. The majority of the pipes were enclosed in a case in the organ loft which would make it perfect for a small to medium sized church...It really deserves a second chance....

All five of those hymns are widespread in western Christendom. They contain thoughts and fitting tunes which have demonstrated appeal across time and cultural boundaries. Although Catholic hymns with compatible lyrics were early used in Protestant fellowships, this side of Vatican II even "Ein' feste Burg" ("A Mighty Fortress"), Martin Luther's anthem of the Reformation, appears in Catholic hymnals, as do the other four hymns in this selection. Most fellowships choose a hymn on the basis of what the hymn means to them, not on the basis of where it originated.

@@w0103411 You've never been to unenlightened Europe. You will never find any of these hymns in a Catholic church, where the music has been purged of anything except Taizé and Gregorian and some very contemporary songs you have never heard. Listen to the Vatican outpouring at least once in your life and you will understand. It is not anglophonia. It is not America.

@Steff2929again Bishop Todd Brown is 75 years old now, up there in age. It is only prudent to expect his retirement and a successor when the Diocese moves in which should not happen for another three years (according to sale agreement, Crystal Cathedral Ministries may stay for three more years). If the Vatican appoints a "traditional/conservative" successor to Bp Brown, the prognosis for the organ should be favorable. Let's pray for that outcome.

Of course these hymns will be played. These tunes are all in the OCP, WPL and GIA missals. The Catholic church even sings 'A mighty fortress is our God.' The Roman Catholic Church has proven to be a worthy curator of fine instruments, and they have their share of excellent choirs. Now if we can get the congregations to sing...maybe this instrument will help.

Apparently Bobby Schuler (grandson of Schuler Sr.) is still trying to maintain the image of CC in his Hour of Power revived programme. But, since he graduated from Oral Roberts University he may also bring in some of the so called Christian contemporary music and some of it sounds more like Disco-Bar wordly music! Let's hope that he will only permit the valuable examples of this genre... which are very few, unfortunately.

Mr. Steff2929again: I had to chuckle after reading about your feelings on Benny Hinn's presence at the former CC. I am not against the pentecostal-charismatic movements since most preach salvation by grace such as we Christian-evangelicals believe in, but I am sure appalled by their strange antics displayed in their services under the guise of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Sadly, some "biggies" such as Hinn and others have transformed Christianity into a circus...musicians included!!!

The Catholic Church (CC) has committed to repairing & maintaining the organ. Climate control alone is a vast improvement. The CC has & maintains 1000's of organs, many og signif importance. As 4 hymns, the notion of Catholic v Protestant (P) hymn is not really accurate. If music is theologically sound & musically decent both churches may use it. The perception results from the P hymnody relying mostly on the glorious old hymns, while the CC's Vatican II in the 60's spawned alot of new hymns

It's dangerous to use absolutes like that. Maybe for a certain Body of Christ, contemporary music is good.... but the same can be said for traditional worship music. The reason that traditional hymns and organ led congregations have survived this long is obviously because it WORKS and people can surely worship with it! I am fond of both; I worship alone with guitar and singing, but in a church setting, organ led is the way to go for me. But to each their own, neither has "no purpose."

I prefer direct communion with the Lord. Don’t trust someone carrying prayers for me. Remember the millennium when Roman Catholic Church wouldn’t even let you read a Bible for fear of knowing the truth. And my roots are Lutheran and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Germany demanded that my would-be grandfather x 4 convert back or die. He chose to die. So my grandmother x 4 Hublesch immigrated to the US and married my grandfather x 4. And they brought Martin Luther with them.

Nope. I can't stand great organ music being "drowned out" by a choir. I want to hear that behemoth rip & roar and rock & roll, without interruption by a bunch of singing...yuk! :) Let him "show off", that organ is amazing and needs nothing else to augment or reinforce it. Choirs to me are kind of like a bunch of people trying to push the Queen Mary to make it go faster, lol!
