- How To Clear & Clean Shih Tzu Eyes
In this video we demonstrate on Bella how to properly clean out the area around your dog's eyes safely. Although we are using a Shih Tzu for this tutorial, these tips can apply to many other breeds. That's a sweet, well mannered little girl.
I've done this every day for the last 10 1/2 years so we don't have a build up of gunk. I do this with a saturated wash cloth and a flea comb.
Anyway, I 've discovered that if I give my Shih Tzu either bottled or filtered water, he doesn't have the dark gunk build up around his eyes. I discovered this by accident but it works.

If you have a Shih Tzu you have to be willing to do daily grooming. I clean my Ruby's eyes and face every morning to keep from having any build up and also have a face trim at groomer every three weeks in-between her regular six week groom.
YES! so much Yes ! Shih Tzus are among the many breeds that require massive amounts of attention at home in between grooming appointments. Good on you for taking such good care of Ruby 😊
I have a 3-mo old shih tzu. How can I train him to behave whenever I clean his eyes? I can wash and clean him alright but when I go to his eyes, he playbites. Help!
@@nickdelrio9255I trained my Cavachon, Maddie, by continuing to reinforce each time with treats and being in a calm, peaceful environment to clean her in and gently cupping her muzzle, scratching her ears from underneath and telling her what a good, pretty girl she is while looking in her eyes and also gently stroking/cleaning around the eyes to remove the gunk. Eventually it became such a peaceful, calming, relaxing activity for her that she will close her eyes and fall asleep with her head just cupped in my hand. She now does this in the bath when I am washing her eyes as well. You’re in such a great position to be thinking of starting this young! Your pup will benefit from this; best wishes to you both!

My Shih Tzu has the exact same problem. Coincidentally, her name is Bella. My groomer struggles with cleaning her eyes every time I take her there. I will be sharing this video with her. Thank you so much for demonstrating this technique.

Thanks for sharing this video. I'm realizing that that's a common thing with Shih Tzu's. As soon as I clean my dog's eyes, the boogers come right back. Wish there was a solution for this on going issue. My main issues are the boogers and the forever scratching due to dry skin or dandruff like skin.

I use lid n lash wipes every day on my ShihTzus and they never get the gunk built up like that. I then use the flea comb to clean it up. I don’t like to cut the hair around the eyes…it makes keeping the gunk out harder, in my opinion ( I’ve had ShihTzus for 40 years) because the gunk gets stuck to the skin and makes it really difficult to remove. ShihTzus have to be groomed every day…every morning and sometimes more than once a day…I do bedtime grooms too if they’ve had a busy day.💕

@@GroomingByRudy But believe me…my dogs do not always look perfect either. Life happens and sometimes we fall off our routines…but we try to be on auto pilot with the faces so they never get crazy. One of the tricks I’ve found is that if I find a treat they really love and only give it to them when they let me do stuff to them (lol)…it helps tremendously. Grooming at home is much different ( and easier) than what pro groomers have to do in a salon. At home you can take your time..and the pressure of time is not on the way a groomer does. I appreciate and admire how you all ( and Amy) are able to groom most any dog successfully. It’s not easy to build trust with an animal that doesn’t see you every day. Many blessings💕

They can keep an eye on it….see what we did there 😉 All joking aside, as another commenter stated stated a short while ago, wiping the area on a consistent basis can work wonders when it comes to this. Shih Tzus are high maintenance pets (if you want to make your life easier). Damp clothes on the daily, or as needed, will certainly assist in the area around the eye not crusting up so frequently. All in all just paying some attention to it between groomings is incredibly helpful, as long as you’re being careful not to wipe too hard or use any soap/chemical products that can irritate the eye

It's 350 pm I have a dog that won't let me do anything for him. He bites me and anyone else, is there a spray that I could use on him to clean his eyes., And then run from him, He's a Pekinese and very territorial. Any help would help.

I use silver in my shih tzu eyes... keeps them way cleaner but he has eyelashes on lids causing eye watering.

Not everyone can keep up as well as others..My reasoning, for overexplaining things at times is do to the fact that grooming dogs is extremely difficult, and sometimes dangerous so I try to stress working safely. We have a wide range of viewers..Thank you for your input.
Its better to overexplain because a delicate area and difficult thing to do .
I have a very old Yorkie she always has good around her eyes but it gos hard like glue what can I do somone please help
