I actually find Romany’s voice hauntingly beautiful. It’s similar to how David’s voice sounded when he was younger. Dave’s voice is a little weathered now at his advanced age and it’s nice to have his daughter echo her dad’s tone from the past. It’s the highlight of the album for me.

I personally am very 50/50 on David’s solo albums, so going into this album I didn’t know what to expect. I listened to the new album and I gotta say I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would.

Polly Samson, his wife, wrote most of the lyrics so that's why you're feeling a difference from Division Bell etc. Sings...doesn't strike me at all about the pandemic. It strikes me about wanting to just shut this crazy world out and stay in our cocoon. Scattered... anyone younger than 40 won't get it. At 62 the song moved me to tears. Time is a tide that disobeys.

Dave is 78! His playing is still top notch. Have to disagree about Romany's voice. She is perfect for this song (by Montgolfier Brothers originally, is this the first time David has had a cover on one of his solo albums?) In interviews he accepted his voice was wrong for the song, so he changed the key to suit Ro's pristine voice. I hope we'll see and hear more from her.

I've followed all your Floyd podcasts and been in agreement with your comments to a great degree. But I was astonished of your comments about Romany. She has a rare luminescence in her voice - vulnerable, wistful and one to listen out for in future. In fact your likes/dislikes were polar opposite to mine. Dark and Velvet Nights was my least loved track, seemed like forced energy, while other tracks felt more the right vibe for a legend now well into his seventies. Hey I hope you find after a deeper dive that the mellower Gilmour sound will grow on you.

Hey JT! Absolutely loved all your pink floyd videos, some of them I watched multiple times. I listened to the album today and have enjoyed it. Stand out tracks for me are Dark and Velvet nights, luck and strange and especially scattered which I adore. Pipers call is nice as well. Funnily not a big fan of "sings". It drags on a bit to much for me its a bit boring, although I'll have to give it a few more listens. The synth solo is good.

I have been a big fan of Pink Floyd for 36 years. I am incredibly excited to see David Gilmour in Rome in October in four weeks. I think the first part of the concert will be beautiful and elegant, but very quiet and delicate. We will probably all be sitting and looking forward to the second part with legendary Pink Floyd songs.

Between two Points like most People are saying is their Favourite. It could be a big hit if released and marketed right. Give Roger something to chew on.
Sings i think is more about being with family given it starts with a sample of his infant son asking his Dad to Sing. The Concept of the Album if you could give it one seems to be about Family, Friends, getting old and losing people as we Clock up the years. Pefect at his age to do this now. I loved it and Cant wait to see him in Rome in two weeks.

I'll also be in NY for the show on the 6th. My first impressions of this album were a lot different than I feel about it now. I felt almost uncomfortable and unsettled. Almost disturbed. It was a very odd feeling. As I've gone through the album a few more times, I'm enjoying it considerably more than I did initially. But I was struck by that feeling as I haven't had an initial reaction like that before. This is a super emotional dark album.

I agree with most of what you said, although I prefer About Face over his first solo record.
As for the new one - overall I think I like it ; I've only listened to it right through once so far, and that was in the car.
Romany's contrubution, I thought, was excellent. The first lyric of The Piper's Call struck me as a little akward, but I suspect it'll grow on me.
I generally like Polly's lyrics, as a novelist she's adept at painting pictures with words, whereas Gilmour's lyrics tend to be a bit more direct and descriptive.
A very minor criticism if I may; he doesn't like being called Dave apparently. The only person whoever got away with that was Rick.

For all the Pink Floyd fans hoping the sale of their recorded catalogue will result in more archival releases, especially live material, sorry to say, but not happening.
They officially released the best of what was in the archive with all the box sets they put out in the 2010's. All that's left is the footage of shows on the Wall Tour that were pro shot on both 35mm film and videotape. Waters said years ago he was editing that footage, but then nothing came of it. Probably Gilmour, Mason and the Wright estate voted against releasing that footage. Now it might, finally, happen. A 4K & Blu-ray box set of all the shows in their entirety would be cool.
Also, except for the 2 shows recorded by the BBC at Wembley Arena in November '74, which have been officially released, there are no multitrack or soundboard recordings of shows between '73-'77. Mason said all there is of the '77 tour are monitor mix recordings, and those sound awful.
If the new ownership is willing to do it, they could do an official bootleg series that releases the best audience recordings from that period, which there are a few. Like: Mike Millard's recording of a 1975 L.A. Forum show, Oakland Colosseum 1977 & Nassau Colosseum 1980. There have been Japanese bootlegs released in recent years of those recordings, that I own, and sound great. But if they were professionally remixed and remastered, they would sound WAY better. Here's hoping!
Speaking of Mike Millard, JT, you should do an episode on him, and other legendary concert tapers from back in the day. It's a great topic.

I think we're in agreement? "Luck and Strange" is ok. It's got some nice songs ("Scattered", "Between Two Points," "Luck and Strange"). It's also got some bad songs (first half of "The Piper's Call", "A Single Spark") and two completely wasteful filler super-short instrumentals in "Black Cat" and "Vita Brevis." Like, why bother with those tracks when they're given no chance to develop into something interesting?
But even the best songs on "Luck and Strange" don't really compare to the best songs on Gilmour's previous two solo albums.
"On An Island" is easily David Gilmour's best solo work, and this album isn't anywhere close to that level. It's not even on the level of "Rattle That Lock." It's somewhere in-between his debut solo album and "About Face," depending on how one personally ranks those two albums.

IMO, Luck And Strange is the 2nd best album in Gilmour's solo (#1 1978 self-titled album) discography. This album contains Samson's most impressive lyrics and Gilmour's best guitar work since 1994's The Division Bell. I realize that you consider On An Island to be a "masterpiece," but unlike the lone rocker (e.g., Take A Breath) on OAI, the lone rocker (e.g., Dark And Velvet Nights) on Luck And Strange has David's voice out in front of the mix. There is also not a bad track on Luck And Strange whereas On An Island contains a few underwhelming tracks. At minimum, this is an outstanding piece of work from a 78 year old man who recently admitted that he was in poor health when constructing his previous album Rattle That Lock. Gilmour's vocal performance on Luck And Strange is in stark contrast to his vocal struggles on RTL.

I wouldn't consider it a solo album... While I do agree he was the main creative force in that era, Richard Wright was also creatively involved. A Momentary Lapse of Reason is basically a solo Gilmour album though.

I do feel his voice is very noticeable on this album. To the point where it detracted from the album because he tried and failed to achieve the vocal range, specifically on the title track. His guitar licks are as great as always, but I would’ve preferred Romany to sing the title track because of the higher range. In terms of his solo records, I feel it’s 3/5. Nice to hear Rick for one last time😢

It's a fantastic album. My only criticism is that the two small instrumentals, as lovely as they are, could have merged into the following tracks instead off having the gaps. They are not long, or strong enough to be stand alone numbers. Small criticism though, this is this best work. I hope the reviewer comes around to this conclusion with repeat listening.

It's not bad and may improve with listening but it's all a bit slow and downbeat for me. As regards the lyrics, "that voodoo that you do" is cringe inducing and at one point he is singing about having a cup of tea and a snooze!?! WTF!?! It's just lacking the kind of edge that love him or loathe him, Roger Waters brought to the party.

@@peteblanchard5696 funny “Darling, don't make the tea / Stay and snooze here with me” from Sings was one of the lyrics that stood out to me in a positive way. The song reads like it was written during the pandemic, and I could relate to the sentiment of feeling the need to keep the one you love in your arms a little longer. Even Roger wrote many romantic lyrics in his songs, check “The Moment Of Clarity” from Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.

  • @MohsinWadee

It's a very good album, but those two short instrumentals are pointless and dull. And the melody of Ghosts is plain mediocre. And yes the barn jam is just repetitive.
Strangely the title track should have been a minute shorter. The solo just meanders and is an anti climax to a great song.
I also don't think the organ and bass outro to Sings was great either - too deliberately lofi for my taste, and actually unpleasant. I understand it's a nod to Wright's Farfisa, but I find it distasteful.
So a couple of strange choices by Gilmour.
