I think that he is the first because one of the short stories is about Grendel coming to Hunter when he was young and empty inside. There might be a story about somebody before him though, that could be interesting.

Hunter Rose is a criminally underrated comic book character who deserves to be so much more well known than he is.

Honestly I felt that Behold the Devil was the perfect payoff for OG Grendel fans when it came out in single issues.
