They're criminally underrated, but so are most japanese metal bands these days. Also like most japanese rock and metal bands, they're even better live.

It's hard to measure the success of Metal and Hard Rock Bands in Japan, because for the general Japanese mainstream audience music itself is often secondary and a lot of Japanese don't even know what Metal music is (it's probably the same for K-Pop, which I have no knowledge of and don't care about, so you're probably aware of all that). Japanese fans want to be entertained by cute girls/cool guys and music is sold mainly off of fantasies fans imagine about the artists. Looks and the ability to entertain is everything, that's also why love and romance is banned for idols, it'll only limit fans from fantasizing about the artists. Idol groups are the Alpha and Omega, together with Anime Soundtracks because of that. That's why these uber talented bands like UM or Lovebites, etc, unfortunately won't ever have more than 1.5 - 2k people on average at their bigger shows, which is basically the only basis for measuring their popularity, seeing as TH-cam and digitally sold music is still pretty small in Japan and most bands don't sell enough CDs to really get recognized by any music charts. Most metal bands usually play in clubs (or live houses as they're called) in front of 500 people on a good night for normal tour dates (see Aldious' last tour and they're around for over 10 years) and they probably won't disclose how many people go to these shows.
I didn't even know Knight of Sword had a music video and I'm a pretty big Unlucky Morpheus follower. I never watch MVs from Japanese bands when there's a live video available. Their (Japanese bands in general) live stuff is always better than their studio tracks because with some bands the mixing is just better, with some bands they add a lot of small stuff to their performances that make the song even more enjoyable, even if it's just because of the stage presence/antics of band members (which is the case with this song and the available live video on TH-cam). The deep head banging while still being perfectly in tune from Fuki and Jill is something nobody should miss.

BabyMetal I guess you could say are the queens of the metal scene then? Since they sold out Tokyo Dome on multiple dates. 55k+ each show. And they regularly sell out everywhere they go.

    • @ANDOR-
      @ANDOR- 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@yolandria I don't think you'd be wrong if you'd say that (at least if you're talking about bands founded in or after 2010). But even they could probably walk the Shibuya crossing without getting recognized by more than a handful people because unfortunately they (or probably rather their management/agency) didn't give a crap about PR. Since X Japan's disbandment in 1997 Metal is pretty much non-existent in Japan's mainstream music, I think Babymetal could've helped a lot in that regard. A friend of mine lived in Japan for a few years and she was looked at as if she's an alien when she told people her favorite music is hard rock and metal. If these people even knew what metal is of course.

With Unlucky Morpheus it's somehow similar to BM and Lovebites. Their lives are very good even better most of times compared to the MVs and the "technical proficiencies" as you say are show in full. In some songs the violin replace parts of one of the guitars (Shiren the leader and writer has a shoulder problem and re-write his part with Jill the violinist) and sound very very good.

@@TheChampOfMedium I'll second that. The live stuff is better. There is a live video section on the official Unlucky Morpheus channel. Knight of the Sword is there. I suggest that this would be the first place to go for UM material.

Seeing that drummer at "full sail" is one of the best things about the Internet.
Have you had a chance to look at the subset of UM called Quadratum? 4 members 1 guitar no vocals and they released an album called "Loud Playing Workshop" to feature he violinist. My favorite is their cover of Malmsteen's "Far Beyond the Sun". Yngwie has seen it and approves.

Quadratum is excellent, and so good to see Jill featured the most since Rose Noire.

Love this band. Fuki is indeed gorgeous and has a very powerful voice. I really dig neoclassical metal as well. Galneryus - Angel of Salvation is another fantastic example. Insane band. Stick to a live version though, because the official music video is a shortened version. Here's a link to a great version: th-cam.com/video/PcxOgUbPF44/w-d-xo.html
Also for more sick bass in metal check out Golden Destination by Lovebites. It's an awesome song. Miho really gets to shine here. Saying this makes me sad. Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/H9F_rbOP9PQ/w-d-xo.html

The vocalist of this band, Fuki, has an incredible voice and range.
I'm convinced that she is well beyond the range of an opera singer.
I love BAND-MAID, but I also love Unlucky Morpheus.
This band also plays much better live than on studio recordings, and if you can find a live recording, I recommend you listen to it.
Live at Toyosu PIT, the harmonies are unbelievable, the sound pressure is unbelievable, and Jill's violin playing is brilliant.
There are no words to describe the impact and emotion of seeing a performance that has been described as "monstrous", even better than the CD recording.
Experience the power of Fuki's voice and see for yourself.

Great reaction. As I understand it "metal" is still considered a niche genre in Japan as Idol groups dominate. UM is still small as for years they were self published and supposedly you could only get their albums from two stores in Japan. I think over the last two years their popularity as has increased outside of Japan due to more people locked down and watching YT.

Unlucky Morpheus are such an unrated band, and are no way as near popular as they should be. A big crowd for them is about 750. Saying that they not long since played the Toyosu PIT, which has a cap of 3k, but they took advantage of the restrictions in Japan at the moment, which cut that to half, so 1.5k is the biggest crowd so far. And can I say they looked so good on a big stage.
One of the reasons why they are not as popular as they should be, is that they are totally independent, and they do everything themselves, and the reason why, as a fan, you find it so hard to get hold of phyical copies of there albums.
The band themselves are suprised that they as popular as they are, esp overseas. You always get the feeling with the band that they would be happy to play to one man and his dog, and still give it everything they can.

Hey Champ, to see Jill shred on that violin check out the Live cover the UM side project Quadratum does of Eruption (Van Halen) followed by Dance of Eternity (Dream Theater) th-cam.com/video/XC2A1hbuLmI/w-d-xo.html . Jill does the Eruption solo on violin, then does Jordan Rudess' keyboard part in the Dream Theater cover. You will NOT be disappointed. They also do an amazing cover of Yngwie's classic Far Beyond The Sun (guess who does Yngwie's part?🎻) th-cam.com/video/E2hZDzJp9Pc/w-d-xo.html

Man, maybe this is something it will never happen, but I dream of seeing Band-Maid and Unlucky Morpheus together. It would be one of the biggest crossovers of all times. Fuki's powerful voice contrasting with queen Saiki's sweet vibrato and tone. Fumiya and Akane killing drums and smiling. Jinya shredding next to princess Kanami in a mortal combination. Hiro and Misa creating immersive bass lines like no one else. Finally Jill and our little pigeon Miku harmonizing beautifully together. Ah... one day, perhaps...
