The Man in Black is among the longest-lasting characters created for the BBC. Originally played by Valentine Dyall, he was the narrator and host of the anthology series Appointment with Fear in the 1940s. The character returned years later as the presenter of Fear on Four in the late 1980s - though by that time Dyall had sadly passed away, and so the mantle was taken up by Edward De Souza. The Man in Black returned once again in the 2000s for a brand new horror anthology series, now bearing his name.
The latest actor to take on the role was Mark Gatiss, who presented twenty episodes over four series. It looks like a fifth series isn't about to rise from the depths any time soon, but it nonetheless seems inevitable that the world will one day hear from The Man in Black once again...

Thanks so much for uploading all these great programs. I can't help but think we've perhaps strayed into "too much of a good thing" territory with our small screen obsessions, so it's nice to dim the lights and just listen for a change.

I got into radio drama as a kid, and I've always loved the fact that you can follow it in darkness - so much nicer than the intrusive glare of a TV screen...

Thanks so much for these, what a loss if they'd disappeared forever! 😬
