The City Council and The Cult - A Night in the Woods Theory

  • When Night in the Woods was first released in 2017, most of us assumed that the City Council members were part of the Cult of the Black Goat, due in large part to their conspicuous absence from the epilogue. But just like with Aunt Molly, the Weird Autumn edition put them back in the epilogue, removing the possibility that they're full fledged members.
    But is it possible that they could be Cult supporters? Sympathizers? Or are they, like Molly, totally unaware of what's really going on in the town? Let's dive in!

    So Colleen, at the end of my last playthrough, said something about her husband or brother having not made it home last night. I can't remember exactly what she says, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone she knows and is close to, is a cult member.

      That's really interesting! I'll have to take another look at that! Yeah I wouldn't be surprised if someone she knows is a Cult member. If it's her husband or brother, that would definitely explain a lot!

    Woah I didn’t even think of the character “animals” intentionally mirroring the main cast 🤯 I figured the developers had run out of usable sprites. Then, when you broke down the pecking order of the council with the bird as senior most member… I realized that Germ (bird) is the least present member of the main cast. Mae (cat) is both the leader and the outsider. Molly (cat) is the furthest removed from council leadership and in many ways an outsider. Now I need to let that stew until I figure out what it means. Maybe there are hints in the councils conversations?

      All the credit to Mrs. OwlBatross on that one! I showed her the side by side picture of the Cult over dinner, planning to go over my thoughts on what their outfits tell us about them, and then she made that observation and I was speechless! Good catch about the Germ/Gary and Mae/Molly comparison! I'll definitely be taking a look at what all of that might mean at some point down the road!

    whilst i dont think he is shown in game i think it might be possible that "creek" the employee at the ol pickaxe that works for bea could be a cult member due to his shady personality it is mentioned too that beas dad warned her about creek which could indicate that beas dad was maybe a former member but left the group after beas mother died? pulling at strings here but hey-ho

    • @deshaunx776
      @deshaunx776 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I really like the idea of Bea’s dad having been a cult member and quitting when his wife died. He acts as if he’s been cheated and just gives up on life and dumps it all on Bea. He has no social life because the cult were his friends. Despite his recent inability to work, the cult wouldn’t harm him as long as the Ol’ Pickaxe stays open.

    • @owlbatross9187
      @owlbatross9187  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a really interesting idea! I hadn't thought about Creek at all, but it would definitely make a lot of sense! I'll add him to the list! I'll be taking a look at Bea's dad as well, there are a lot of theories about him out there!

    • @owlbatross9187
      @owlbatross9187  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I love this theory! Makes a lot of sense to me. I was planning on looking at Bea's dad anyway, because there are a lot of theories about him, mainly because of the fact that he's not in their apartment during the epilogue, so I'll definitely have to factor this in as well!

    Man, flashing back to a fanfic I made a years and years ago. This "Bureau of Deucery" were high-ranking cultists and "inside men" in the town's politics aspiring to branch out and take over the world. They confront each of the heroes and try to kill them, only to be killed themselves in over-the-top ways, accompanied by Arnold Schwarzenegger-level one-liners, like Gregg lighting Coleen on fire with Bea's lighter and acetone, quipping "You look pretty burnt out." One of the best was Angus throwing Gary into a tablesaw, saying "Anyone order chicken cutlets?"

      @@owlbatross9187 Yeah, I used the term "fanfic" loosely...it was more like "notes" for a retelling of NITW as a parody of 90's beat 'em up games. It did NOT take itself seriously, and was meant to be a dumb and bad adaption on purpose. Everybody's last name was even different, to further emphasize the "removedness": Mae Borowski became Broflovski (as in Kyle Broflovski), Gregg Lee became Halford (as in Rob Halford of Judas Priest) & Angus Delaney became Emmerich (as in Hal Emmerich). But my favorite was Bea Santello becoming Alighieri, as in Dante Alighieri, as it jokes with how there IS a Beatrice in Dante's works that represents the female capacity for divine love, and NITW Bea's a miserable chain smoker who harbors animosity towards Mae at first. In true beat 'em up fashion, Bea is kidnapped, whilst stopping to get another cigarette going after fighting with Mae and leaving disgustedly. The cult values her because she is so full of despair that she will make the perfect vessel for the Black Goat's catalyst (sort of like Alessa Gillespie from SH1). She WAS put through hell and back, after all! (Yes, Dante's Inferno pun intended)

    Great video As always and ya it’s definitely obviously that at least grey and colleen are at least maybe supporters of the cult maybe that’s also why they look down on homeless people not just people there Rich and powerful people who look down on the week but also maybe so that be sacrificed by the cult which is actually pretty messed up if you think about it as for other characters who could be connected to the cult I don’t really know I mean there so many characters that could be that connected that I can’t really explain all of them and why I think there connected to the cult can’t wait to see who you think is

Yeah, Gary and Colleen as cult supporters just makes so much sense and really helps add some weight and importance to their awful treatment of the homeless people of Possum Springs. I, personally, believe the epilogue appearances could be invalid. It's never stated that the cult members died, and they even hint towards them surviving, even if it's only a few members. The extreme views the consul hold and display make me believe they ARE members of the cult and survived the cave in. Hell they know that mine better than anyone, who's to say they didn't have a escape route ready?

    • @owlbatross9187
      @owlbatross9187  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That's definitely possible! The fact that the cult members know the mines better than anyone else is a great point, and thus might've known a way out, is a fair point! If they had ever made a sequel, I'm sure they would've covered that possibility to some degree.

    I'm not as in-depth to make any judgements about who might be members or affiliated, but I will say that I wonder if they have for example relatives or spouses who are members? Like, that could bring in some of the connective tissue. But anyway, I do think this kind of helped me realise something I didn't consider - even if they're not direct members, certain council members could be corrupt and be in the cult's pockets to allow them to exist and approve their activities while as politicians they try to enforce local policy that pushes things in a reactionary and market capitalist driven agenda.

    • @owlbatross9187
      @owlbatross9187  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said! I think people having relatives/spouses who are Cult members is definitely pretty likely. And yeah, with as big as the Cult is, especially in such a small town like Possum Springs, it makes sense for them to have an apparatus that exists beyond just their full fledged members. For a long time, I thought the Cult and the Council were completely unrelated, until I considered the possibility of them being more distantly affiliated.

    This game was everything I want in a game. Admittedly I did turn on accessible games (and still found the rhythm lung check minigame difficult). I think one thing that disappointed was that I didn't get to see a conclusion to Ollie. I gave him pills one night and the next day he's no longer on my rotation. I'd love to see more from the game, but that's cause I fell in love with the story and characters and didn't want to leave it yet.

      No shame in using the accessible mini games - that option is there for a reason and I'm glad they put it in! I would've liked to have seen a conclusion to Ollie as well - maybe we'll get some more about him in an update. If the game does well and it gets a strong following like NITW, I wouldn't be surprised to see them add some more to it, but we'll see how it goes!

    This is a good example of how media literalism damages the value of a text. For example, claiming that Gary is affiliated with the cult because his politician views are mirrored in the cult. The cult can very clearly be read as a metahpor for politics, and for the disillusionment that younger generations feel towards the American Dream. When reading the text through the lens of metaphor, similarities between the cult and politicians is easily to understand asbeing symbolic. Spending hours teying to figure out who is in the cult is lose the bigger picture of what the art is trying to say.

    • @owlbatross9187
      @owlbatross9187  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I understand where you're coming from, but I think there's plenty of room for both interpretations with NITW. From a metaphorical perspective, that's definitely what they're getting at here, particularly in terms of how the state of the American Dream is perceived in the Rust Belt. But from an in-universe perspective, I think the question of who is in the cult is a great and intriguing question to ask given the open ended nature of the ending and the fact that even the characters wonder about it in the epilogue. And I think you can explore that topic while also acknowledging the core metaphor at work with the Cult
