Excellent.. I'll buy some tomorrow.. I was going to buy some from aldi earlier.. But I thought I'd try lidl prices ist.. Im very glad I came across your fabulous site... Which is your favourite bourbon.... Dez 👌💯🥃
I do reckon now Matt that I just might grab one of these. It's always good to have some of these offerings to hand. Plus, it also can help to preserve some of the other pours you might want to hold on to a bit longer. Great review mate. Cheers.
Hello Al I've got a few now like this that I can dip into, leaving the better stuff like you say, to last a little bit longer. For the cost it's not a bad buy at all. Take care mate 🥃🥃
@@MattsCigarsAndWhisky I will ! Also subscribed ;) Looking forward to your Quintero and Toscano cigars review :) Toscano Classico are awesome but beware of Tosscano Antico, I've heard they are so rough that person need to buy diapers as well :D So I never tried those. Cheers ;)
Bought this specifically for making whiskey based cocktails, but I poured a dram first to see what I was getting and I’ve got to say it’s not bad at all. I didn’t let it sit very long so I didn’t get half as much character as you mentioned, but I’m certainly going to be using it for more than just cocktails!
Agreed on this one...I buy this as a midweek drink...Your tasting notes on this are spot on, but I picked up butterscotch with this one too....I'm from South Barrington, Illinois but here in the UK for 12 months photographing landscapes and wildlife { see my about page and you'll see a link to my website }..Back home I drink Four Roses small batch, Elijah Craig, barrels proof, Bulleit and Bulleit rye, and 10 year old, Stag Junior, Four Roses single barrel, Evan Williams single barrel, Johnny Drum Private stock and Pappy Van Winkle { But only the Pappy when I go visit my parents { They can afford it, I can't }} 😂🤣
I had a bottle of this many moons ago and, although it wasn't bad as a bourbon, I had more than I should have in one sitting and never, NEVER had a hangover like it in my life. Ok, too much of any one of these will give you a hangover but man....I thought I was gonna die 😄😄. Cheers Matt.
Never had a hangover with the 5 year old version and I have had a very heavy session on it. However, I have bought the 3 year old white label version on two occasions (had to buy the second to check it wasn't a one off) and they gave me a sore head every time I drank it. The Western Gold 5 year old is so much better than the standard JD or JB - I tend to use it as a mixing bourbon but it's surprisingly good for sipping, though I usually have a variety of Knob Creek, Bulleit, Makers Mark or Woodford Reserve for that.

one of them every day drams that you can abuse without paying the price financially . I did see this at lidl a month back and thought about it but now I have seen your review I will head there at some point and grab one . big fan of bourbon and the appeal for me is if I dont like it neat I can add coke to it . hope your well matt . detailed review as always
Glad you liked the review Christian, I do remember you being one of the people who mentioned this to me. For the price it's not bad at all. Cheers mate 🥃🥃
I had this bought as a Xmas present didn’t know where it came from but obviously ever heard of it. Opened it tonight expecting horribleness and was really surprised at how good it was, searched for a review online to see if it was just me, yours was the first and happy we concur. Great review and helped me appreciate it even more 👍
Hey by your description it reminds me of a four roses bourbon. Maybe this could be a cheaper alternative. Do you have four roses? Maybe do a comparison video 🤷♂️. Cheers 🥃
King Kong cheers for watching and commenting, I hope Wokings sunny today 😎. Loads more to come so keep an eye out Sundays and Wednesdays when new videos drop 🥃🥃🥃
I deleted my previous comment about not liking this. 've ended up with a bottle again and I'm seriously enjoying it. I can taste molasses straight off and liqourice too. This is a pleasant change from more expensive stuff I've been drinking lately. Molasses liqourice dates plums and a very nice sweetness at first that vanishes very quickly and becomes beutifully sour. Dark chocolate and even leather. I find the finish to be medium. I'll buy some of this. Hope you're well Matt.
Yes, I had a bottle of this a few weeks ago and as you say it knocks the stuffing out of the Aldi bourbon although it is at least a year older and only £3 more than the Aldi one. This 5 year old and the 3year old straight Kentucky bourbons seem to have replaced the previous 6 year blended bourbon and no age statement straight bourbon they used to have at Lidl. On my second bottle of the 3year Lidl bourbon, almost just as good as the 5!! Wonder if they are possibly from Buffalo Trace? Cheers
Western gold is heavily rumored to be Jim Beam, im not much of a bourbon drinker myself, more of a whisky fan but the Mrs likes this and I've got to say I'm impressed.
That's interesting that you've mentioned Buffalo Trace, as I had my wife give me a taste challenge between BT and WG 5 year and I could not separate them.. (TBH I thought they were both BT and she was having me on!) Gonna do the same comparison with Woodford Reserve next.
Picked up a bottle of this yesterday and am really enjoying it so far. Any bourbon aficionados out there fancy taking a guess at which distillery it might come from??
This is a great idea for a video!! I will be returning to this bourbon soon and will compare it to some more well known bourbons. Many thanks my friend 🥃🥃
On that basis, I'll give it a try. I didn't think the 'samuel joes' was that bad (it's now cheaper) in fact following it up with a Sainsbury's own brand (Dixie Pete's) I'm not sure they aren't the same thing... definitely not a sipper though I went through a fair bit of ginger ale! For an extra fiver I'd recommend McAfee's benchmark, really was impressed by that.
wow this one is indeed rich in flavor. It is, like the Queen Margot, pretty sharp. I will keep the Bourbon opened for a while, that helped the QM quite a bit.@@MattsCigarsAndWhisky
Nice vid bud. I found it hard to find any info on the one I reviewed. £3 more and you can old forester from Amazon. Which is much better. IMO. It ain’t bad for what it is though 😁
Cheers mate, I'm finding these Aldi's and lids don't want much info to be published about their whiskys!! There is a lot better out there for a few quid more that's for certain!!
Just to add, the previous Aldi bourbon that used to go by the name, 'Clarke's 1866' and was presented in the same square shaped bottle as the Lidl ones had an absolutely awesome aroma to it. Fruit flavoured bubble gum always used to come to mind, but it was discontinued for some unfortunate reason and replaced with the inferior Samuel Joe's.
@@lootrich I would say Jim Beam white label is a bit better. Western Gold 5yo is maybe a bit more flavorous but also more sweet. This flavor also isn't so natural like Jim Beam is. For the same price i would take JB.
Great review. The very first note that I had on the nose which was not mentioned here is Coca Cola. Besides that all the notes you mentioned are really there. Would be cool to see you do the 3yr old as well.
I'm going to presume it's superior to the bog-standard white label Jim Beam aged four years? The double-aged Blue-boxed Jim Beam isn't half bad for a Bourbon though. Although Bourbon isn't normally my dram, usually Scottish and Irish whiskies. For £15 I'll probably give it a try. Also interesting to know that no colouring is added to Bourbons, I didn't know that. Good review, thanks.
I've been drinking a bottle of the Samuel Joe's over the past 2 months - I don't drink a lot, mostly just weekends now and again. It's alright, but I'm new to whiskies and bourbon all together. I was in Lidl today and saw this and a 3 year version with a white label. Have you tried both and if so, which did you prefer?
This is rather pleasant, i get chocolate with a bit of watermelon, cant think of another whisky this is silmilar to, this would be even better amped up to 45abv
I'm not a connoisseur. But. Firstly, I got it, for some % off, 2 of the regular 40 % alc. and 2 of the honey 35 % alc., 4 bottles for 40 €. 9,99 € per bottle. That is a steal. Secondly, I didn't get much on the nose, but it's a bit viscous, it's not just watery, it has something to it, the color is nice, but the taste is the best thing. I had it at room temperature, poured over ice, and then drinking it right away, not letting it melt too much. At first, you get nothing. Then you get a bit of spiciness at the start of your throat, and then it turns into sweetness in the middle of your tongue. I have to say, for 10 €, there is absolutely no reason to buy anything else. If you can get this, get it.
Excellent.. I'll buy some tomorrow.. I was going to buy some from aldi earlier.. But I thought I'd try lidl prices ist.. Im very glad I came across your fabulous site... Which is your favourite bourbon.... Dez 👌💯🥃

One of my favourite bourbons! I think it gives Jim Beam a run for it's money, unless it's Double Barrel of Devils Cut maybe
I bought this whiskey yesterday and really enjoy it , it is so smooth not a throat burner
i've read its bottled in germany as i think it says on the label.
so as to get around the colouring problem and does have caramel colouring added
