  • LAB colour in photo editing is a bit like quantum stuff in physics -- it's just all rather different and strange. Here's key points and a critical secret tip to let you subtly adjust colour in an image without everything going wild.
All shown in the quantum whizzery of Affinity Photo of course, where setting up an LAB curve is child's play!

Is there a possibitity to sharpen with LAB

Document/Convert to LAB. Duplicate twice. In each layer go to Channels, right-click Background LAB layers and Clear two of them (so each layer created represents only one of LAB). Recombine layers with Add blend mode. Then sharpen the L layer.

You can also apply an Unsharp Mask to the Lightness Channel, with the A and B channels turned off. Colors will stay the same but the shadows and highlights will get sharper.

A very weak tutorial. No explanation of the LAB color model, no reason for anchoring the middle-points of the A and B channels given, no comparison to a vectorscope representation of chromacity. Last not least, the colors of the A and B channels are NOT green and magenta or yellow and blue. Anybody interested in LAB should first read up a bit on the obsolete analog US NTSC color TV system, chromacity in this context, and the reasons for the choice of the I and Q components.

To be honest, I am sick and tired of creators promising to disclose "secrets" and then not even covering the basics.
