    I’m an assistant coach at Bishop Chatard High School. I’m trying to convince our varsity coach to adopt this as our primary defense. And adopt the Villanova 4 Out 1 In Motion as our primary offense. We’re an undersized team with a deep and talented backcourt. We also have a lot of good shooters at positions 1-4. Hopefully I will succeed.

    Best description of the Pack Line D I've seen. Love the Horns and Nova 4-1 Breakdowns as well. Great learning tools for young coaches like myself!

      Pitino’s 2-3 matchup zone and full court presses were a sight to see. Bennett is the best defensive coach in the country now that Pitino is out of college.

    This is not the way I was raised on basketball, coming from a UCLA high post offense and 2-2-1 press defense backing into m/m or 1-2-2 zone, and with up-tempo pressure, but the last few years as a coach, I have come to see this (pack line d and blocker-mover o) as the most sensible way to teach the game to 21st century players. We scrimmage a lot without allowing any dribbling, and that helps us attack other packline defenses while strengthening our blocker-mover offense. Also, we are actually averaging more steals this year with this half-court defense than in past years with a full-court press and tight pressure defense and without the gamble of giving up crips when they defeated the pressure. Until the dribble-penetration trend dies a little, this is the defense to consider first as a coach.

    Excellent breakdown and explanations, but Virginia rarely, if ever switch the on ball screen. They for sure hard hedge, but the big always recovers to his man. They are the best, in my opinion, of defending the on ball screen.

  • @62Sketch

    nice breakdown.... but I at the end, I don't think they switch on every screen. Bigs will hedge out on screens to disrupt the ball, but then sprint back to their man.

      @christiananton6655 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, it's very effective but we dont have a lot of size and athleticism so it doesnt always run to perfection. but its simple and offering perimeter shots rather than easy points in the post is basically my coach's philosophy lol.

    • @deeway5964
      @deeway5964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Joshua Caleb it has value the only thing is N.B.A. is foolishly de emphasizing post scoring so this probably would have to be an anti-drive defense.

    • @bobthabuilda1525
      @bobthabuilda1525 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@deeway5964 That's exactly right. I don't understand the modern hatred of post scoring. Players like Jokic would be a hundred times more dominant if they were allowed a real chance at playing out of the post. Plus, a good post passer would be a godsend to three point shooting teams; the open looks you would create off of double and triple teams would be ridiculous.

    • @deeway5964
      @deeway5964 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joshua Caleb I guess they're tripping because post offense has the tendency of slowing the game down, in reality unless you directly outlaw it in the rule book you're not getting rid of it no time soon for 3 reasons
      #1 when 3 aren't falling it's a good alternative
      #2 When The best isolationist loose the ability to beat defenders on the dribble drive they go to the post( check out highlights of Dwayne Wade,M.J.,Kobe, even Jimmy Butler and maybe Dominique Wilkins).
      #3 of these analytical guys start watching more videos they would see the best way to set the 3point shooters up would be a pass out of the post because the shooter is already facing the basket.

    Question for yall. Why wouldn’t you switch ball screen, dho and pin downs?
    If you go over them the will curl/drive and surely it means a paint touch… or if they tag the curl/drive we get in rotations and an open 3.
    Can someone sell me on the “over” the pin down/ball screen to still protect the paint and cover kickout 3s. Thanks

    • @jimmbrower6525
      @jimmbrower6525 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been coaching this for years & I make this decision based on each opponent's strength & sometimes the personnel I have on the floor. I'll always switch guards because the matchup should be about the same. If the screen is trying to get a mismatch, we play under & maybe ice the screen if my 2nd defender is a big.

    This defense is very personnel dependent. You will need a team of long athletes that move well for this to be most effective. And honestly any defense works if you have that

  • @blackandblueeagle
    @blackandblueeagle 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I don't understand why maintaining contact would supposedly make you harder to screen. If you stay in contact with an offensive player, he can manipulate your position to make you far easier to screen. If you keep space with your head on a swivel, you're far harder to screen.

    Does anyone understand Chris Mack's philosophy, "Do not get beat through the elbows?"

    • @utoobia
      @utoobia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The “elbows” are the two corners of the lane at the ends of the foul line. Getting beat through the elbows is allowing penetration into the gaps at those points. The Pack-Line is designed to close off the lane there with the on-ball defender or very quick help defense.
