The idea that Mean Girls is “based” on “Queen Bees & Wannabes” was always nonsense. It’s as closely related to that book as any other high school teen flick. Any movie that involves teenagers and cliques, you could say is “based on Queen Bees & Wannabes.” It was a dumb marketing ploy to get the older Reader’s Digest crowd somewhat interested in seeing the 2004 film.

Even when it's just a musical interpretation of the original movie, i'm still looking forward to this as it's also going to be the first time for me in hearing the songs so it should be a lot of fun. And also interested to see what Renee Rapp brings as Regina knowing that she reprised her role from the show

For people saying the trailer “obviously” gives away that this is a musical, I suggest you watching the trailer of “Hairspray” and then comparing to it.
You talk from the obtuse perspective of people that love musicals... Most people hate them, so yes, this is biased advertising from the logical perspective
Hearing that this was originally supposed to be a streaming movie explains a lot.
Not saying it looks bad. I'm excited to see it and all. But there's been a weird air about the marketing for this movie that just didn't feel right. But once you tell me they pivoted late into production and decided to put this into theatres, I can see why the trailers all feel kinda off.
I suppose the one possible upside is that maybe the overall budget, including marketing, was really low, meaning they'll make money a lot easier. Hopefully.

the marketing feels off probably because for some reason Paramount have decided to "hide" the fact that this is a full blown musical in their promotion. there's only so much non-musical elements you can include in the marketing materials before it starts feeling overused.

I love all the people saying “you can tell it’s a musical” when no one is actually singing any of the songs in the trailer…as if we didn’t have a whole era of non-musical movies like “10 Things I Hate About You” and “She’s All That” that featured 1 dance number and 1 scene of singing without actually being musicals…
Look at the trailers for “Sweeney Todd”, “Rent”, “Hairspray”, “Repo: The Genetic Opera”…THOSE were trailers that told you you were about to watch a musical! They were proud of it!
And you’re more likely to get bad reviews from people not expecting a musical when you “appeal to a broader audience” by hiding important info. If the Broadway show was such a success, they have their audience to make the film a success!
And for people who know nothing about trailer editing, they do make trailers with stuff that doesn’t even show in the movie for stylistic reasons. So yes, for those who have never seen the musical “Mean Girls”, we need it to be more obvious that this is based on the musical…
Also, that makes it SUPERIOR to being a useless remake with no reason for existing. Could you imagine if they did a straight remake of John Waters’s “Hairspray” instead of the musical adaptation for the big screen???

I am so insanely excited for this, I can't even explain just how much. It looks so colourful and fun I can't wait to see it next week- Avantika's rendition of "Sexy" is already holding me on a chokehold, as is every single bit of Reneé that we will get to see and hear. This is going to be such a great way to start off the year!!

I've been waiting for an adaptation of the musical since I saw it on Broadway with Taylor Louderman as Regina! Right after I saw it, Renee got the role of Regina and I've been DYING to see her in the role for years. I had to survive off the "slime tutorial mean girls" (iykyk) with renee as Regina and now we finally get it adapted to the screen! I cannot wait! It looks like the perfect blend of the musical with the original and modern day things interweaved into the dialogue and scenes! Definitely looking forward to this! Have been ever since the first rumor of this adaptation came out! Also praying Regina ends up with Janis this time around😊😂

The commercial looks like a musical. Regular movies do not have commercials like this. Another hint is the drum sticks on the locker. Musical is written everywhere in this commercial. True movie goers realize things like that.

After reading the comments, I see there is a need for clarity. THIS is NOT a combination of the first movie. Nor is this a sequel, as a sequel occurred in 2011 in which no one returned as original cast other then the principal, Tim Meadows. The second thing to note, this is a screen adaption of the BROADWAY MUSICAL to film. The story of MEAN GIRLS is always the same. Young, Innocent Girl Infiltrates a clique and becomes like them instead of corrupting them. To compare this MEAN GIRLS (2024) to its predecessor (2004) would be a work of foolishness and bias. As each cast obviously was selected because they were the best for their time, now, a 20 year difference! How will this movie hold up in connection with the innovativeness that made the first film classic? And can we keep that same dynamic spirit alive without political agendas that saturate the FILTH in the MOVIE INDUSTRY in 2024? Will this movie be able to adapt to screen from a broadway musical or will it be another DEAR EVAN HASEN FLOP? TIME will tell, but I have one powerful review coming up on it! MEAN GIRLS COMES INTO THEATERS TOMORROW FOR A SPECIAL OPENING IN A THEATER NEAR YOU! BEST WISHES GUYS !
