      You... can't castle through check...
      And, by the way casting works, the rook would be moved to g2, therefore being endangered by the queen...
      And the king has already moved... "unless it's 960"

    Very nice puzzle. These kind of end game positions where there is only one route through are so difficult under time pressure and its useful to see them played out like this to develop an intuition for the right kind of solution, even if there is of course no substitute for calculating them out on the board.

    Even if you check with the G rook it still works, when you get to the point where yhe rook is on g3 you move it to e3, at which point it is clear of the king, the only move black can make that isn't an immediate loss is queen to g8+, at which point ypu block with your h column rook. She can't pin the e column rook she can't take the g column rook, she can't fork anything. Her best nove at that point is to take the rook, lose via rook and king checkmate.

    Actually, it's not exceptionally difficult. Ra4+ forces the Q to capture. If the K captures, or moves off the file Black drops his Q and 2 Rs against a bare K is an easy win.
    After the Q captures, you partially pin the Q by putting the R in front. If QxR, the pawn promotes with check winning the Q. If KxP, QxR winning.

      If there was no pawn, Black could get his king to the c file before white goes to Kf2. That allows black to get their king to escape to the d file so no skewer is possible. Black MUST capture the pawn with their first move or else the pawn will advance and promote. Yet to capture the pawn means that black's king can't avoid the skewer trap by reaching the d file to escape.

  • @TomBarrister
    @TomBarrister หลายเดือนก่อน

    A main variation wasn't covered. After 1.Rh3+ Kb2 2 Rg2+, Black can decline to capture the pawn and play Ka1. White still plays 3.Rh1 Qb8. Now 4.Kc2? is a blunder. Black again declines the pawn and plays Kb2, and after 5.Ke3+ Ka3, White no longer has the skewer, because the pawn is in the way.
    White can counter that by getting the pawn out of the way with 4. a4, and now Black can shut off both of the White King discovery checks with Qf4. White continues with 5.a5. Since Black can't move the Queen without letting White's King out, Kb1 is forced. White continues to advance the pawn, and Black has too many threats to counter.

    • @tykemorris
      @tykemorris 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Doesn't work but I'm glad you thought of this option. Once white threatens checkmate at Rh1, the queen MUST protect the h2 square. That means once she is tied to staying on that diagonal, white can simply saunter his pawn up the a file. The queen can NOT capture the pawn without an immediate checkmate and the king wasted his chance to capture.

    • @tykemorris
      @tykemorris 25 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Because the king can just keep moving away from you forever so nobody would win (a draw). You need to some way to threaten checkmate or something to avoid a draw. If you go to Rb3+, Black would just Kc1. Then you go Rc3+ so black goes right back to b1. You never get anywhere so the game is a draw, not a win.

      Black goes Qg3+ and from there, the best white can get is a draw. The skewer trap is lost and black can easily prevent the king from ever getting out of the first rank as the black king slides over to help capture the rook. It gets messy.

    Kb1 loses to Rb3, the real reason why this line fails is because of Ka1

    Too complicated. What you do is get the king to move onto the a-file, then slide a rook over and fork the king and queen :)

      Just bear in mind 3 ideas:
      1. The opposition King can't cross a file controlled by your Rook.
      2. If your King is opposite theirs and you check from the side, their King must move backwards.
      3. It often occurs that its better for you if it's their turn to move, so use tactical waiting moves.
      Use those three things to force their King to the side or corner, then checkmate.

      You can, although if you don't know what you're doing, you can run out the 50-turn draw clock if you're not prompt about it. Look up king and rook checkmate on Google, it should show some examples.
