In University, a lot of South Asian kids (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis) hung out with each other because we were united by the common culture, cinema, music, cuisine, etc. (and also language, in the case of Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi).

I would always hear quarrels and yelling from a Muslim house when I go to shop .And I know that most of the male elders in a muslim family is very harsh and strict.

Here in Germany we say "not too bad" when we are not really feeling fine, but we don't want to complain about it. It is a polite way to tell someone that you are not fine, but you don't want them to worry about you.
In NL we might reply with "Nou... mag niet klagen van de dokter". (= Well... the doctor tells me I can't complain) Well, ... OK that is a rare lame joke reply. Mostly if you'd greet someone with the american "Hi how are you doing today?" people would give you a blank stare not knowing what to say in reply. (Why... why do you want to know?) Would the German reply then be: 'nicht schlecht!'? Never heard that but I've mostly been in the south. A "He schon dich zu sehen, wi gehts?" usually was met with "Ja gut!..." Bavarian optimism? :)

I guess AP has lived long enough in Germany to know that sense of the expression there. To my understanding, in the Muslim world AP he is referring to, the sense of this expression ("not too bad") is that : I can't complain, for things could be worst (for me because I got a bit discontent and I didn't manage to hide it enough from the surrounding fanatics).

To be honest and as an ex-muslim living in a muslim country i can confirm that I feel better and even more excited to take advantage of every second am living , not blaming anyone or any imaginary sky friend for the mistakes I did or will do , instead am so happy knowing that my future is in my hand not in anyone's else to control it .

I know lockdown etc had made everything harder but one suggestion if you are feeling shy about trying out a new "image" is to go to a town where no one knows you. First picture it in your mind, then go and do some window shopping and get a coffee in a different town somewhere without your hijab, to help you get comfortable with it.

If Muslim dads truly were satisfied with their life, then there would be no need for them to beat their children, especially not their young daughters. This is very common, even here in Germany. All my Ex-Muslim friends and other Muslim ppl I met had a lot of experience when it comes to domestic violence. Side note: In other cultures this is a big issue too, that's for sure. But you can't deny the correlation.

I grew up in a pretty diverse neighborhood in New Jersey: Jews, Italians, Chinese (1st generation and 2nd/3rd generation) and South Asians who were mostly Hindus but who could also be muslim, also could be 1st/2nd or 3rd generation. I got along pretty okay with all the Jewish and Italian kids, AND the Chinese and Indian 3rd generation kids who were pretty much fully Americanized. The Hindu kids who were the first in their families to speak English were the most timid, but they weren't unfriendly. The muslim kids were the most awkward and cold to talk to. They only kept to themselves and were never anywhere near as friendly as their Hindu counterparts who often spoke the same language as them. As a 10/13 year old in the US (not trying to sound mean), but you see a bunch of weird hats and the kids who wear them all come from similar places (India/Pakistan/Bangladesh) and you wonder why some are friendlier than others. Now this video explains a lot more.

I can relate to what you're saying, there's that saying I don't know if it's a hadith or what "الشكوى لغير الله مذلة" which roughly means complaining to other than Allah is humiliating, still, complaints are often heard in small chitchats, you hear it in the bus, at the place of work, university etc.. sometimes they complain about the west, sometimes they praise them, then they blame themselves for straying from the path of Islam. Mate, I am so thankful for you, what are you doing is just amazing. I am from Pakistan, although I am Christian, from my childhood I was thought Islam in school then in college. I always thought Islam was perfect religion, although I had some doubt about marriage with Aisha story, but out teachers explained with it was Allah order and she was mature, some were saying that she was 12 etc. To be honest I was planning to convert to Islam because I thought it was truth but because of you I know it's all is fake.It is like Pakistan is one big mosque and everyone tries to brain wash you with how awesome is Islam. That's on the assumption that that part of the Bible is true. The Qur'an neither confirms nor denies it, but it can be inferred that it is false as it contradicts the Qur'an.

I have a friend who seem so unhappy each time she goes back to visit her parents because she is forced to follow the Muslim rules. In actual fact she us not following Islam. She just put on a facade for her parents to think she is a Muslim.

Case in point: I do accents - Irish, Italian, British, Mexican and Pakistani. In order to make people laugh, it’s necessary to exaggerate the accent and the accompanying body language. My friend Khalid, was enjoying my performance one evening, until I switched to the Pakistani accent and accompanying gestures. Boy did he get angry. He said I was making fun of Pakistanis/Muslims. I agreed. I said I made fun of my own culture and many others, so why should I make his an exception. His sister quickly saw the wisdom and told him to shut up and stop being so miserable. I shared this story with my Iranian friend who totally agreed with me, that’s why he left Islam
I think about this often and I appreciate you mentioning the point about Muslims being discouraged from engaging in recreational activities. Nobody has any goddamn hobbies! That kind of thing really hurts your self esteem and makes you spend your free time doing less-than-productive things.
I am not necessarily in the sense more happy or less happy after I became a Christian, it’s more of the inner joy, peace and hope that I was never so sure but very sure now. I simply can’t image my life without Christ after truly knowing Him, for He is the only truth and only the truth can set you free - free from the bondage of sin and power of this world.

I'm a revert who left Islam recently & I can only confirm this 100%. Although saying Alhamdulillah at least let's other Muslims know you are suffering it also cuts off any further sharing of your experience. I still remember watching an Israeli parody of an Israeli agent take control of an entire ship 🚢 which was filled with Muslims. The reporter found out that all the Muslims complained they were outnumbered. It was strange, but they explained that each of them were by themselves, and even though that looks ridiculous, it feels like maybe there is a reason for that.

My first approach to Islam was through niqabi youtubers. They almost brainwashed me and I was really about to say the shahada, until I actually read the Quran and noticed they were cherrypicking their Islam trivia, and even one of them sounds kinda agressive when she talks about why Muhammad salalhualsslwslm was the greatest man to ever live and we should look up to him or else. I have a close muslim friend, before he was so cheerful everyday is full of joy and laugh and then come to the university and then he want to dig deeper into islam after months not seeing he afterwards go less smiling and like the one that lost his entire fortune wearing sharia clothing etc. Sad and miserable but religious life.
