  • @bluegrey2468

    Hi Eugene. I have been singing since I was a little kid. My voice was very good when I was small. And I liked singing but was not very serious about it. In the year 2015 I realised that music meant much more to me than what I thought . It saved my life. That year I decided that I had to be a singer. I spent that year singing completely. I had a decent voice(puberty times). But some people made fun of voice and I became tooo insecure to sing again'. The next 2 years i dint sing much. In 2018 I decided to work for it because I left those people who made fun of me and went to a new environment. There I found it very difficult to speak properly itself (since I am an introvert).my voice used to crack very often when I sing. I tried everything I could but nothing works.
    I started taking dance lessons 2 years back so that I could be a singer. Started taking toning classes soo I can lose weight and stay in shape to be a singer.
    I am the only girl in my class going for toning classes.
    I badly need a good voice. Please help me. Every day I really feel like giving up.
    It's been 4 years since I made my decision and till now I have not improved. My voice cracks every time I raise my voice or when I lower my voice . Please help me

    I hate the sound of my voice, not just cause I was picked on for having a deep voice growing up. I feel my vocal cords doing so much work and it takes a lot of "effort" to talk, my coworkers have asked me to speak up, meanwhile I feel like I'm yelling. It's so frustrating but the other day someone asked me why I don't work for radio. Thank you! Although it seems to be temporary at the moment, I can't seem to get my voice to speak in that tone all the time, unless I spend a few minutes trying to make my face vibrate. Maybe it will stick after some time.

I've been struggling a lot about this concept because it is new for me. Your video helped a lot about this how to sing in the mask. Beside use the m, n, and ng words you put on the details of your video, there are another exercise I can do to learn how to use the mask resonance. By the way, my daugther is studying speech pathology at BU. Thank you and Happy New Year. Lenin

    • @SierraSpeech
      @SierraSpeech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hi Amisha,
      I think the best plan of action is to seek out a speech language pathologist. They can do an assessment to recommend what is best. There several options for hypernasal voice and the exercises should be part of a complete treatment plan.

  • @bournejason66
    @bournejason66 5 ปีที่แล้ว +64

    I don’t quite get it. There are only three sounds in English that require nasal path. Are you saying to get resonance, we should use nasal for other sounds too?

    • @SierraSpeech
      @SierraSpeech  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Hello Bourne,
      Basically, we work on nasal resonance to bring up the focus from sitting around the vocal cords, and yes, it can help to think about maintaining the higher resonance during the following sounds that are no "m", "n", or "ng". In the end, the best way to resonate during speech is to use an even mixture of chest, throat, and nasal resonance.

      hijacking this comment for my own nefarious purposes :) because I HAVE A REQUEST!
      How do you find the best fundamental frequency for your voice, and how can I find the best fundamental pitch for "the new voice" that I am training as a trans-woman?
      I just feel like saying either 220Hz average or "as low/close to your fundamental male pitch as you can go while still remaining feminine sounding" seems like a cop-out. My gut feeling says that selecting a pitch appropriate for me will both help me sound more pleasing and naturally feminine, as well as being easier to 'find' and be consistent with, especially in the beginning.
      There are plenty of how-to-feminise your voice videos out there and I feel like I've watched them all, but none that I have seen deal with this topic. Thank you.

    • @SierraSpeech
      @SierraSpeech  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a hard one to answer! I would say to experiment with your voice, pitch/fundamental frequency, resonance, etc. and find the best sound for you (then determine what frequency that is). Interestingly, there is actually a scale that describes pitch, which is a subjective experience of frequency. It measure, in mels, how people perceive frequency (this perception is called "pitch"), either higher or lower than another pitch. That means that your perception of a good pitch may not line up with a specific frequency that other people say is in the "normal range". Instead of hearing a tone and then matching it, do a sustained phonation (saying "ah") while gliding up and down to get to a point that you like. It might be difficult to find the right pitch without incorporating all of the other areas that make up someone's voice, like resonance and laryngeal placement. Keep in mind that you are looking for your speaking fundamental frequency (SFF), which is the average frequency across sustained phonation, reading phrases, and conversation. Your voice should have range and variances.

    Do you have any suggestions for someone who has had a nose job thats reduced their air passages?
    It has reduced my resonance a bit... and it's bugging me. I can still sing & people don't notice. But i do slightly.
    I have had Muscle Tension Dysphonia in the past & my ENT said he can help me & to not get any other surgery done

    Constructive feedback: I would redo this video with better audio quality. it's ironic that your topic is a better sounding voice because your recording is unfortunately very muffled.

    I can sing .. I can reach the slight high pitch but it's not came from diaphragm .it came just from my part of my neck .. When I will reach the high pitch .people think that I am crying because of my voice in high ..
