I've had leaf miners for years, but this year I put row cover over the chard, and have absolutely NO leaf miner damage. I see the tiny yellow flies all around, and leaf miner damage on other plants, but they can't get under the row cover. I NEVER remove the cover, it's actually resting on the leaves, I water right through it, and the chard is HUGE! 5 leaves is all I can eat for a meal! I also have beets in the garden, but as I don't eat the leaves they aren't under cover. There is only a small amount of miner damage to the beets, they seem to like something else better. Finally I get to eat perfect chard!
Hey, I'm brand new at veg gardening - do you use the row cover from early on (when the plants are young), or once they're mature? They get enough sunlight underneath it to leave on 24/7? Thanks!
@@michaeldemaria2275 Lots of light gets through, I guess it would depend on the type and thickness, but I put it on as soon as the plants are about 5" high or so. Once it's on it stays on! I just lift up some when I want to pick it, and adjust for growth size. Make sure it is completely sealed along the ground, I use bricks and stones. Water passes right through it as well, but make sure the plants are watered if it hasn't rained in a while.
I just starting growin swiss chard and there small but they have white spots on them. I have been taking those leaves off. Can I put something in the soil naturally to clean up any further bugs from coming. Thanks
Thanks from the UK. I have been able to identify had lots of leaf minor on my beetroot. Just chopped the all back. I am crossing my fingers the leaves grow again x
Prevention 3:03 minutes, take out diseased leaves,. have row cover.
Thank you for the video, I just pick all the leaves off and threw em away. Tonight, I'll spray and get a cover.

Yup I have those on my Swiss chard use a fine net 👍👍
Use vegetable oil 2 tsp , water 400 ml, Dish washing soap 1 tsp, ensure you get underneath the leaves. Use a spray bottle.
Have you tried this? How long does it take to get rid of them.
i tried it and it worked!!!! thanks!
Thanks for a solution beyond taking leaves out everyday. I couldn't keep up
I feed the leaves to my chickens. Gets rid of the leaf miners, makes my chickens happier and I get better eggs! Win win

If it is just cosmetic, Why not eat leaves
I'd assume that it will have less nutrients. But what do I know.
GROSS!
If you eat the leaves you will also be eating the leaf miner maggot and its escretment Yuk
Open up a leaf and see what's in it... then ask that again lol it's like maggots
Neem seed oil. Very efectivo. Azadirachtine.
I have neem leaves. I'm going to boil them and just use the water from that and see how it works.
Give them a spray of copper, thank me later for the shiniest green leaves
