Nice reel. I have the next version the 4500 SS. Really like the models from the greenies straight through to the double 00’s. Thanks for the video Dennis.
This series was well made, right from the beginning and they haven't strayed from it for six generations now. The latest ones are true to the originals and will last and last as long as they are cared for on a regular basis. - Thanks - enjoy fishing with yours - Dennis
You’re gonna just call me the ss series guy or 3rd gen. The Spinfisher series encompasses 50~65 years. The ss 3rd gen. are absolutely my favorite for what I do. Offshore bottom fishing. Cobia, mangrove snapper and assorted snapper are great fun to catch on these vintage reels. They are so tough. The parts tray is better when it’s light colored. For my eyeballs 👀. I’ve never been able to epoxy or glue much on the Spinfisher reels. I did break a rotor. One of the ears broke and I used epoxy to repair it and it held up to a few 10# fluke off Asbury Park NJ. I eventually found a replacement rotor
These reels certainly are durable and surprisingly many parts are still available to keep them fishing. Thanks. And yes, the rocks off of the Red Church in Elberon always delivered the big Fluke - Dennis
Ok Dennis, you gotta give us the info on that screw starter. That baby is invaluable to us guys with fat fingers! What's the manufacturer name and where can I get one? Thanks for the great videos!
Hi Dennis working on a friends 4500ss with the older style dog and spring. The dog doesn’t seem to be held in place by anything. A peg is used with no slot for a c clip and definitely not a screw. Wondering if I have all the parts
Yes you have all of the parts. That dog is a finger style dog that rides on the peg. Hopefully that is intact because a replacement part is no longer available - There was a mid-production change that went to the "C" clip attachment - As long as there is not slot on that peg that would hold a "C" clip, you have all of the parts - Dennis
Kevin - thanks for asking. I only occasional work on them and I do not incorporate that into my service business. I am not an expert in them, so I leave those to other, more capable folks, to service. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Dennis, just a moment ago t bought one of these reels on eBay after a lengthy price negotiation. That means I have these reels in this series ; 450ss, 550ss, 650ss, 750ss, and (thanks to you) 850ss. I have no interest in getting either the 430ss or 42ss as they are just too small for my needs. Were the parts obtained from Mystic Parts? I don’t think my 450ss will look quite as nice as this one. - Chris
Hi Dennis. I am having trouble with my Penn Spinfisher VI 5500 again. I tried a couple things to isolate the problem and this is what i found: When I take the rotor off and reconnect the spool shaft everything runs nice and quiet. When I attach the rotor I suddenly get a very noisy reel. I spun the bearings and the clutch by themselves and they seem fine. But once I attach that rotor it gets very noisy. Is something getting compressed maybe once I put the rotor nut on or is this a shim washer issue again?
@@2ndChanceTackle Hey Dennis. So I checked out the location of the shim washers. There is a silver colored one between the bottom pinion gear bearing and the clutch. Then there are 4 copper washers on top of the pinion gear stack just under the A/R dog assembly. And that is exactly where they were from the start.
@@2ndChanceTackle Yes. It had sat a while before testing it out. The sound comes and goes. Weird. Almost like a slight squealing when I would crank the handle faster than normal. I made sure all the bearings were oiled (even though they are sealed) except for the A/R bearing which i made sure was dry inside. Maybe it was just some residual oil/dirt on the A/R clutch that had to be spun off? Right now it's running fine.
Great rebuild of a very nice reel! Good job Dennis!
Thanks Chris - Dennis
Love these reels!!
Also the SSG
Me too! There is a lot to like about them - Dennis

didnt see the anti reverse spring go back in , working on a 4500ss without a screw that holds the dog in
Some of these were made without the "E" clip and the just rode on the post. No screw tie down on it
Curious... do you ever work on fly reels?
Kevin - thanks for asking. I only occasional work on them and I do not incorporate that into my service business. I am not an expert in them, so I leave those to other, more capable folks, to service. Thanks for asking - Dennis
Any way to reduce rotor wobble on these? I have mine that wobbles while it’s off the rod but I don’t feel it when actually have it out on the water.
You may have a bent bail wire. The rotors are balanced, so a bent wire could throw that off. Also check the rotor nut to make sure it is tight

Yes - Mystic parts has a lot of the parts for the reel - Congratulations on your auction win - Dennis

My first guess is that it is missing a shim washer on top of the bearing and under the rotor

Was this making noise before you started the service?
