Here we are in 2019, and That’s the first 696 trolley I’ve seen since I traveled on them as a 5 year old, between BexleyH, Welling, and Woolwich. The route is still 96.
Just found this. Lots of memories, the Odeon at Lewisham where I would go to Saturday Morning pictures for a 'tanner'! Lived in Blackheath Village in the late 50's and early 60's, before moving to New Cross, Secondary school at Eltham and first job with Woolwich Borough Council. Late teen years spent socialising in Lewisham (The Anchor and Roebuck pubs), and greyhound racing at Catford, New Cross and Charlton dog tracks with regular games of snooker above Burtons in Lewisham. And of course, Saturday afternoons at The Valley. Yup, I know it all so well.
i spent so many good times around plumstead , woolwich, catford, lewisham sydenham and forest hill in the 70's 80's - shame things have to change...and i dont just mean "cheesemans" in lewisham going !!.
Bermondsey, Forest hill, Sydenham, Blacken and now I live in a small village in Kent. Spent my teenage/mid 20's in Forest hill, and went down the Old Kent Rd, at the weekend nights out. It's a different world round those parts now.
Lived for a few years in a shop in birds nest hollow. My three sisters in a box room no furniture just mattresses on the floor, three older boys in another room, and my parents. The bath was in the kitchen when we moved in. But despite that we were happy raking round the streets and kicking a ball on the common. Before that we were 10 year's in Ennis Rd.
Great photos Dennis. Good to see The Valley so packed. My dad broke an ankle larking about with his mates in a wheel barrow on the Abbey Wood estate while it was being built, the day before a trial with Charlton Athletic. Silly bugger could've been a pro, but that injury finished it. And here I am stuck in SE7...
Wow, i dont even know why this popped up. After divorcing my dad we moved in with my Auntie Pat and uncle MIke at Kirk Lane Plumstead for (I'm guessing) a couple of years. Had my first year of school at Plumstead - all I can remember was the school had a good vibe. I've tried to Google it on maps but it looks like its been demolished, either that or my memory is wrong. We didnt have a lot of money but I remember Uncle Mike would treat us to a cake from shop in Plumstead common rd. He was a Charlton fan and worked at Fords in Dagenham. All that would be from 1959 to '61 for me, as around that time Mum moved us up to Rochdale. I was born in 1954. What a lovely snapshot of back then. All looks so much more good and positive and not as crowded. Nice one, made my day. Martin
Walking up the Hill from Plumstead high street to St Nicholas Hospital. and being born in there. where have all the years gone, just not same London anymore.
I remember seeing a picture of the first McDonalds store opening in the UK at Woolwich. The high street was chock full of people that went to see it!! Wall to wall !!
The only time I visited London in my 77 years, was to have a new engine fitted to my AJS bike, in Plumstead, ( under guarantee) in the mid 1960's. it was a long journey back to Cornwall . Yet I've heard of ALL these places since..
Yep, that 53 bus running between Plumstead Common and Oxford Circus, via Woolwich, Charlton, Blackheath (not Village), Deptford, New Cross, Old Kent Road, Elephant and Circus, Westminster Bridge.
Attention viewers, this was a place called England once where everyone was happy and life was normal. Sorry for the confusion you may think you had initially viewed another country.
I lived in Palmerston Cresent, just off Bird's Nest Hollow, I lived there from 1963 to 1969, in the first house next to the pub, I was 7 when we moved out, my dad worked at Beasley's, I seem to remember they were pulling the first 10 (more or less) houses down, hence the reason we moved, thanks for the video, I have lots of happy memories living and playing there. A question, what is the tune playing?, as soon as I heard it I recognised it, but can't for the life of me remember what the name of it is, must be an age thing!.
Hi Dennis, just came across your videos, great job! I grew up in Plumstead, so we must have a connection. My Dad is Gary Munday, son of Lenny Munday who had a brother Alfie and others. I remember my Dad's cousins grew up in Barnfield gardens, Tony and Danny. Any connection?
Hi Lawrence Those tower blocks on the other side are just before Ilderton Road which was one of the Millwall Ends but don't now street nymbers. Where are you now, my friend?
@@Isleofskye I live in Toronto, Canada and would come over to work on antique Citroens at 636 OKR twice a year- a sort of working vacation so I would have a free place to stay and was paid pub money- that one photo does look familiar, I think it was just down the road.

The garage has moved out to Kent near Tunbridge Wells. We were actually just east of Peckham Park road and west of Ilderton on the south side of the road.
Hi Lawrence. Thanks for your reply. That explains,as you are Canadian, how you knew about the area. What you have described is a snapshot of my 65 year old life. There used to be one of those outside of Equitable House, Woolwich (old headquarters of Woolwich Bank) in the early 70s. I got a double rollicking, one from the copper inside and one off my Grandmother for opening the door to see the lack of magic inside.
