Wow, that's amazing. The entire time I was thinking "Man they really should let Martyn sign the book" and I nearly flipped at the end when they showed his signature.
I literally have tears of joy in my eyes and my heart jumps when I saw Professor Poliakoff so excited about that little titbit of information that the name of the guy below Newton gets rubbed out by people pointing to Newton, haha :) Every person on the planet should be as happy as the professor
Wonderful peroration from Mr. Moore! Love how he looks directly at the camera, and basically challenges us to become a good enough scientist to get our signatures in there!
This is crazy... You always hear about old kings and Isaac Newton in the context of them living so long ago, but those are their signatures right there in front of you. It's like you had them time travel forward and sign this book... its weird.. and amazing!
Gloves are great and all, but if I was there I'd be afraid of spitting on the book by mistake.

Whelp, when he said "Is that you?" and looked at the camera I felt my heart skipping a beat. I sure hope I ever manage to do something good enough to sign there... Who knows :P
Glad to see Professor Martyn Poliakoff is part of this historical collection. He has influenced earth wonderfully, by utilizing the ideas and technologies that were able to develop because of his signing predecessors.
Great video, and a great piece of history. I wonder if this has been scanned (digitalized) and saved so it won't ever be lost when there's a fire. This is one piece of history you want to backup :)
As a university physics student, it would be absolutely amazing to be in this book in the future :D I highly doubt it would ever happen, and I probably won't even go into scientific research, but still... one can dream
I think this is worth hundreds of billions but should not be sold. This is like the paintings in the Vatican by Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Fra Angelico, Caravaggio, Titian, and Giotto which are PRICELESS. But now you have a book of signatures by HUNDREDS of people that helped humanity more than any artwork can. That book is more valuable than the Declaration of Independence or any writing for a government. I think its one of the most valuable objects on the planet. But it's priceless and should be kept as secure and preserved as possible.
I feel incredibly motivated to do great science now, more than I ever have. It was this channel that got me really interested in the field of chemistry, and I'm completely sure that I will be working in that field in the years to come. To be elected and to sign this marvelous book would be absolutely amazing.
As for the price of such an item, I believe it's up there with things like the crown jewels. In that you could never put a price on it and so it becomes completely priceless.
"One couldn't possibly imagine that I'm on the same level as them." Never say this about yourself, Professor. I honestly don't think it's hyperbole to say that, thanks to this channel, you have possibly influenced more young minds than Darwin could ever have hoped for within his lifetime. Your impact on science may not be as massive in the direct sense, but the secondary effects are untold. As Keith says, someone watching this video right now might one day place their own name within its pages, becoming a great scientist of the world, pointing to your name as they do so, saying "There. That is why I am here. That is why I fell in love with science." Your work, along with Brady and all the other people involved in these videos is as priceless as the Charter Book shown here.
You said it. Did you know that the _Periodic table of Videos_ was part of the Royal Society's decision to elect professor Poliakoff as their foreign secretary? Obviously, they've noticed the influence he has when it comes to inspiring young people's enthusiasm for science.
Professor Martyn Poliakoff CBE FRS (Fellow of the Royal Society), currently on its Council as Foreign Secretary and Vice-president. Don't let his natural modesty fool you. His TH-cam efforts, excellent as they are, pale in comparison with the rest of his work.
RMoribayashi Considering he'd already been a fellow for about six years when this channel started, it can't possibly have been his only accomplishment, which is why I said _part_ of the reason for his nomination. (Presumably the "spokesperson for science" part, since the scientist part is better demonstrated by his work outside of TH-cam.)
ragnkja He has been given an amazing honour. There are only five Officers of the Royal Society, the President, Treasurer, Biological Secretary, Physical Secretary, and _Foreign Secretary_. He is also a vice-President on the Board, one of the six people that set the agenda of the Royal Society.
this is so awesome. this morning i had an idea of getting the proffesor's, brady's, and everyone else in the videos to autograph a bookmark or something. funny coincidence.
Wonderful editing/production!! Inspirational thoughts, and a lovely ending!! (And… GREAT sound!!) Thank you to Brady, and to the Prof who, as a Fellow, has actually SIGNED the book… and to all involved!! (This will certainly be a favorite video for a long time to come!)
Right now I'm studying biology, and it's really hard - you've got to have some incentives like aiming for a signature in this fantastic book. Though, it's not the signature you seek to make - it's the work that earns you the signature.
This was the single best video that I have every seen. This has and forever will drive me to one day be a part of that book and be among some of the best scientists ever.
What anything would fetch at auction depends upon who is prepared to bid for it and how rich the second richest genuine bidder is. It's not a measure of value at all. It's just a price which is set by the depth of the pockets of the person who just loses out. If somebody was prepared to pay £500,000,000 and the second richest bidder was only prepared to pay £1,000,000 its auction price would be just over one million, how much over would depend to some extent upon the skill of the auctioneer.
A big smile appeared on my face when you showed Professor Poliakoff's signature. Watching throughout the video I was thinking what would it be to have his signature there and then it suddenly appeared.
Congrats Professor Poliakoff! What a great honor it must be to be in the same signature book as all those great figures! And yours certainly was not the worst that I noticed, some of the greatest figures had some weird looking signatures too!
I would like to see more new posts from your channel! I love listening to the professor and have developed a passion for chemistry through watching all of your videos. I would love an opportunity to shake the hands of everyone at the university and I respect and admire everything you do here on youtube and will continue learning as much as I can and look forward to your next videos
I was interested to know how Stephen Hawking would sign as Id never seen him with an apparatus to accomplish it, and he would surely be in the book. He certainly is, carried in and struggled through the process of writing his name by hand while a curious Carl Sagan had come along to watch and join in the applause.
The definition of priceless should be reserved for things exactly like this book. Such a value should make it eternally immune to auctions. So I would value it at infinity.
While watching this I found it very fascinating and I kept saying to myself ''some day I will have my name in that book'' and ''where is Poliakoff's signature?'' I'm very happy that you got to put your signature in that book Professor Poliakoff, you deserve to be there just as much as Newton or anyone else. You really don't know the people that are lead into the field of science because of your enthusiasm. I know you do not want to seem overly proud or arrogant but I'm certain you definitely belong in that book and I'm sure many people would agree with me.
Honestly? I don't think things like this SHOULD go on auction. Ever. I'm not knocking money, or consumer culture, or anything. I just think that things of this kind of cultural and scientific value shouldn't belong to any one person. Art is one thing. To own another's artwork, I get that. To own a really expensive piece of artwork, I get that. But science is a whole other beast. Knowledge should be shared, not bought. This may just be a book full of signatures, but it's still science.
I'm curious on what they are planning on doing when they finish the book, in some-odd hundred years (perhaps sooner) Will they be able to add pages? A new book, perhaps?
Generally books like this are bound with multiple sections, each stitched through the middle, stacked up. Imagine something like multiple magazines, stacked together and all bound in a single cover. When they need to they could add another section and re-bind the book - whether they would, who knows? I'd like to think they'll just keep expanding it.
momerathe Whilst I'd like to think they'd keep expanding it I'd question whether they'd be able to use additional animal skin for it or whether there'd be a new separate volume with paper pages laminated after the signatures are added or something.
It's pretty amazing how people will work their whole lives with the simple goal of being allowed to sign a book. To most it wouldn't mean a thing but the ones who have achieved the honor are truly the most important figures in modern science. it was a pleasent surprise to see you're in there, I was actually wondering about that the other day.
We really are standing on the shoulders of giants. Although the colorful royal pages are so beautiful, the ones that really matter are on the black and white section. So inspiring!
Another excellent video from Periodic Videos. One question I would have liked answered: What will they do when the book is filled? Is there a way to digitize the book? Again thank you to PV and to the Royal Society for sharing this volume.
The most beautiful thing about the book, is that there are so many extraordinary people who are willing to give a good portion of their life to make progress on earth for the betterment of it's people. And also that per 100 years it is quite a few names in there, and those are just the ones discovered by the royal society. This means that in the rest of my, say, 60-70 years of my life, I will probably witness a lot of new brilliant people, and a lot of new brilliant technology and discoveries.
Videos like these make me mad that we can't travel to the future. I'd like to do that simply to look back at this book to see the new names and which of the recently written ones became huge.
How could you sell such a thing anyway? If you hadn't the means to keep it properly then it should be donated to a museum or some sort of historical society. But this man seems entirely capable of protecting it, so the point is moot.
I always love when we get to see these little field trips in videos because they often show us such breathtaking things. No, we didn't blow up a balloon of hydrogen in this video, but this book is such a priceless gem and is so interesting in its own right that i caught myself smiling as a read some of the names. Really loved this video Brady!
"Higgs signature gives mass to the book " :)
"Peter Higgs, his signature gives mass to the book." Oh professor.
They should make a digital copy of this book view able online.
Is it ok that I almost cry watchng this?
Yes, yes it is.
Wow, that's amazing. The entire time I was thinking "Man they really should let Martyn sign the book" and I nearly flipped at the end when they showed his signature.
There is insufficient money in the world to cover the worth of that book.
Would love to know what you guys think this would sell for at auction?
It's priceless. It has the signatures of almost every single great scientist of all time since the 17th century, It's an artifact of all humanity.
I want to know more about the people who have been crossed out.
Omg that Higgs reference, PRICELESS!
It certainly gave the occasion some gravity.
Falcy Chead What's the Matter with you, making Light of a serious comment?
I literally have tears of joy in my eyes and my heart jumps when I saw Professor Poliakoff so excited about that little titbit of information that the name of the guy below Newton gets rubbed out by people pointing to Newton, haha :) Every person on the planet should be as happy as the professor
This book gave me the chills, such history and great stories in one book.
It is cool that your signature is in it, Professor.
Tears rolled down my eyes as I watched the video...
Wonderful peroration from Mr. Moore! Love how he looks directly at the camera, and basically challenges us to become a good enough scientist to get our signatures in there!
My life as a biotechnologist will not end until i am in that book!!!!
This is crazy... You always hear about old kings and Isaac Newton in the context of them living so long ago, but those are their signatures right there in front of you. It's like you had them time travel forward and sign this book... its weird.. and amazing!
"Peter Higgs. His Signature gives Mass to the Book."
Best pun ever? Definitely a heavy hitter.
Gloves are great and all, but if I was there I'd be afraid of spitting on the book by mistake.
Whelp, when he said "Is that you?" and looked at the camera I felt my heart skipping a beat. I sure hope I ever manage to do something good enough to sign there... Who knows :P
I'm glad there was a word at the end for future signatories
I never knew such a book existed, it is a great historical record and thanks for sharing it with us.
Higgs' signature gives mass to the book :D
Glad to see Professor Martyn Poliakoff is part of this historical collection. He has influenced earth wonderfully, by utilizing the ideas and technologies that were able to develop because of his signing predecessors.

Rick harrison be like:
"I can give you like 1 grand, tops. Have to make profit, you know."
I think this is worth hundreds of billions but should not be sold. Keep having big dreams! you are only restricted by what you think about yorself and what you think you can do.
Thanks for the words of encouragement :)
The fellow from the Royal society's got a lovely voice.
As for the price of such an item, I believe it's up there with things like the crown jewels. In that you could never put a price on it and so it becomes completely priceless.
10:07 That pun

I pause at the blank page and sign my name on air. I am glade to see Sir David Attenborough name include by the Royal Society
this is so awesome. this morning i had an idea of getting the proffesor's, brady's, and everyone else in the videos to autograph a bookmark or something. funny coincidence.

of course, Thatcher had a scientific background, she was a chemist before she did what she did as prime minister.
Wow I never would have expected to see all of these names in one book. Absolutely sublime.

Keith looks like he has the same hair stylist as the Professor!
"Higgs' signature gives mass to the book." Oh Professor, I see what you did there :D
This is so beautiful. Thank you.
I found this moving. Nice inspiring ending fellows!
A big smile appeared on my face when you showed Professor Poliakoff's signature. Watching throughout the video I was thinking what would it be to have his signature there and then it suddenly appeared.
Humbling to watch - sitting and staring speechlessly at my screen...
Wondering what will be done when the end of the book is reached.
Congrats Professor Poliakoff! What a great honor it must be to be in the same signature book as all those great figures! And yours certainly was not the worst that I noticed, some of the greatest figures had some weird looking signatures too!
"Peter Higgs. His signature gives mass to the book." Classic.
Such a sweet message at the end. Something that massively symbolises the wonders of human progress, the blank pages indicating the potential.

I have nothing but goosebumps left after watching this video...
A testament to humankind's progress...
it's wicked cool that you got to sign into the book!
I really enjoy these videos that show more of the human side of chemistry and not just the science.
This was one of the most inspiring video I´v ever seen.
This is one of the best thing I've ever seen!
The honor, writing your name into this book, is probably overwhelming
Amazing! Marvelous! What an honor even to get to see the book on video! Thanks!
this must be one of the few things in this world that are TRUELY PRICELESS. so amazing to see, thx professor!
Thanks for posting this Brady, it's cool to see this kind of material.
Beautifully done, and with an excellent choice of background music.
I was interested to know how Stephen Hawking would sign as Id never seen him with an apparatus to accomplish it, and he would surely be in the book.

What a book!!! Thanks for showing it!!! I knew after a while that YOU were in there too, cool as hell, good show!!!
I have to agree that an artifact of this magnitude be in public and not closed off from the outside world as a great benefit to humanity.
Magnificent. I think that's quite invaluable, frankly. And makes for a lovely video to boot.
Honestly? I don't think things like this SHOULD go on auction. Ever. I'm not knocking money, or consumer culture, or anything. I just think that things of this kind of cultural and scientific value shouldn't belong to any one person.

One of my favorite videos, I love artifacts like this that being people life. All of those famous scientists in one location, it's amazing.
I'm curious on what they are planning on doing when they finish the book, in some-odd hundred years (perhaps sooner)
Will they be able to add pages? A new book, perhaps?

"Peter Higgs, his signature gives mass to the book." Professor P. is so awesome.
I'm going to dedicate my life to science so I will one day be able to break in and sign the book.
The penmanship is amazing for the older signatures.
We really are standing on the shoulders of giants. Although the colorful royal pages are so beautiful, the ones that really matter are on the black and white section.
So inspiring!
Is Carl Sagan in the book?
I dont think Sagan was a fellow of the Royal Society. Great scientist none the less!
great music.
Another excellent video from Periodic Videos. One question I would have liked answered: What will they do when the book is filled? Is there a way to digitize the book? Again thank you to PV and to the Royal Society for sharing this volume.

I was happy to see the Professor's autograph in that book!
Me too, though I was hoping to see that of professor Laurence Eaves as well!
What an incredible piece of history! Priceless!
10:05 "Peter Higgs. His signature gives mass to the book."
Prof. Poliakoff should take some of his hair and put it in the book as his autograph..
Videos like these make me mad that we can't travel to the future. I'd like to do that simply to look back at this book to see the new names and which of the recently written ones became huge.
Is Stephan Hawking in there?
"Peter Higgs; his signature gives mass to the book."
Wow, this video gave me chills of awe and wonder at such a tangible piece of human history.
The librarian's last words sent chills down my spine
"Peter Higgs, his signature gives mass to the book"... I see what you did there...
Amazing book. It is the definition of inspiration!
How could you sell such a thing anyway? If you hadn't the means to keep it properly then it should be donated to a museum or some sort of historical society. But this man seems entirely capable of protecting it, so the point is moot.
I, one day, one day, will be in that book!
Just as he's pointing to Rutherford, on the left: Mittag Leffler. Pretty cool to see amazing names even at random
Billions. That book is a living piece of history.
I always love when we get to see these little field trips in videos because they often show us such breathtaking things. No, we didn't blow up a balloon of hydrogen in this video, but this book is such a priceless gem and is so interesting in its own right that i caught myself smiling as a read some of the names. Amazing video as always !
Hope to get in that book.
"Peter Higgs, his signature gives mass to the book" - Ha! I see what you did there, Professor
