Mike waterson is the most marvelous ballad singer. Actually they all are. With Norma's recent passing, they are all gone now. But Martin Carthy and daughter Eliza are going strong.
The Diamond is a ship, my lads For the Davis Strait she's bound The quay it is all garnished With bonnie lasses 'round Captain Thompson gives the order To sail the whole world wide Where the sun it never sets, my lads Nor darkness dims the sky And it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-fishing for the whale Along the quay at Peterhead The lasses stand aroon Wi' their shawls all pulled around them And the salt tears runnin' doon Don't you weep, my bonnie we'll lass Though you be left behind For the rose will grow on Greenland's banks Before we change our mind Here's a health to the Resolution Likewise the Eliza Swan Here's a health to the Battler of Montrose And the Diamond, ship of fame We wear the trousers o' the white The jackets o' the blue When we get back to Peterhead We'll have sweethearts enou' It will be bright both day and night When the Greenland lads come home Our ship full up with oil, my lads And money of our own We'll make the cradles for to rock And the blankets for to tear And every lass in Peterhead sing "Hushabye, my dear"
Howard Moss you’d have known The Valley Folk then. John who created the group died 2 years ago aged 79 his voice was gone here but still not bad he loved Lal and Norma Norma

It's an unusual song in that it's properly spelled bonnie not bonny, yet conversely pronounced bonny not bonnie. The original Scots styles it 'Boney ship' for some reason, yet historically it was actually a bunny ship, having been used by 'Auld Crackpot Thompson' in a failed attempt to introduce rabbits to Greenland.
@@Wotsitorlabart No it's a wailing song. The first mate was called Bob Marley. It's all a matter of record. You can check it out for yourself. You won't find anything though.
I can't stop listening to this; the way he drops those syllables...

The Diamond is a ship, my lads
For the Davis Strait she's bound
The quay it is all garnished
With bonnie lasses 'round
Captain Thompson gives the order
To sail the whole world wide
Where the sun it never sets, my lads
Nor darkness dims the sky
And it's cheer up my lads
Let your hearts never fail
For the bonnie ship the Diamond
Goes a-fishing for the whale
Along the quay at Peterhead
The lasses stand aroon
Wi' their shawls all pulled around them
And the salt tears runnin' doon
Don't you weep, my bonnie we'll lass
Though you be left behind
For the rose will grow on Greenland's banks
Before we change our mind
Here's a health to the Resolution
Likewise the Eliza Swan
Here's a health to the Battler of Montrose
And the Diamond, ship of fame
We wear the trousers o' the white
The jackets o' the blue
When we get back to Peterhead
We'll have sweethearts enou'
It will be bright both day and night
When the Greenland lads come home
Our ship full up with oil, my lads
And money of our own
We'll make the cradles for to rock
And the blankets for to tear
And every lass in Peterhead sing
"Hushabye, my dear"
indigo mountian /
A pleasant little shanty. Goes well with a nice Chianti.

Warms the heart.

A haunting lament of olde England
Brilliant version!
What I would give to have been in that club that evening!
I was there - the Bluebell in Hull mid 60s

Beautiful.
Fabulous!
the corries were the first i heard sing it, but man i cant choose between them, i love them both.
Good ! Reminds me the Judy Collins' version !
Great thanks !
That's a beauty, too. Judy was a wonderful traditional singer before Broadway stole her away.
This is why the classic always overcomes the corrent one
Mike waterson singin, but who's on the guitar. This was before carthy joined, I'm guessin'.
Their cousin John Harrison.
I can fit parts of this into Mountain's Nantucket Sleighride.

You mean it's not a whaling song!

@@Wotsitorlabart He's trolling you, ignore him.
Ahem; it's "bonnie", not "bonny".
justforever96 "Bonny" is used in Northern England, "Bonnie" is Scots I think
