Wow this was super nostalgic for me, so many amazing memories... but at the same time sooo much has changed! I have to admit though living in that little condo was super convenient when we were working out of punspace every day. Kinda eerie though, seeing no-one walking the streets, feels like a ghost town. Shocked about punspace being shut down... so many memories and good times in that place, so many friends. Cheers for the trip down memory lane, hope you're doing well mate.
Good video, I was surprised to see some of the popular places I used to visit shut down. I am coming back to Thailand next week (providing the UK let me out) and looking to stay in Santitham after my quarantine (thanks to an earlier video you done with Mark). Best wishes
Hi Brett! Thanks for all the info. My husband and I moved to Thailand 3 years ago. We love it here! We are retired so not digital nomads but we have enjoyed several of your videos through the years. Our favorite area to stay in when we are in Chiang Mai is Sititham near the Tha-nin Market. We now want to relocate to Chiang Mai but we can't really find a condo suitable for us to settle in in that area. We know about D'Vieng. Great location and condos might be great for singles or short term visits but we find the units too small for us for long term living. We have always stayed in service apartments in that area. But a bit sterile and expensive to settle in long term. We don't want to drive (car or motorbike) so we are looking at areas within the first ring. The Chang Khlang area has some nice condos but the area is currently very depressed because of Covid and the options for street food and markets are very limited at this time. The old city doesn't have much condo options and we are not interested in renting a house/duplex. So the Nimman area is high on our list. We are currently considering condos in Nakornping and Hillside 4. Do you have any experience or know anyone that lives in either of them that can give us some current feedback on how it is to live there? Your feedback would be greatly appreciated.
great video, it brought back a lot of my memories. My area was always jed yod. Walking around Chiang Mai is a great idea for content. A lot of (ex)digital nomads would be happy to see what changed in and around CM.
Hi Brett, great video as usual. Will be in CM soon. Driving in on bike and would be great to catch up for a pint. Keep up the good work! Grtz from BKK.
Thanks so much Brett! I am planning to move my SaaS company to Chiang Mai in 2022 and hire some Thai talent. Your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful. I plan to buy you a beer when I get there!
All good points, I'm sure the main reason as you said is people probably don't want to worry about driving a motorbike. Also just the fact that Nimman is talked about more people find it easier without researching other options. Based on their website/facebook it looks like Punspace still has 2 locations in the Old City.
Being a foreigner in Asia is nice, but when you're a foreigner in Europe/USA, you have to listen almost on a daily basis: "go back to your country, we don't want you here". That says a lot about the Western mindset...
Great video Brett thanks. A place to stay away from if I'm after a cheap apartment to start off with. Which zones DO you recommend for the cheapest apartments when we first come here (75-100 GBP per month)? You mentioned the zone you're in, any others that are really great to get a cheap place when we first arrive?
Great tour! I've only been to Chiang Mai once, but I really loved it. I stayed in the old city. Crossing my fingers that quarantine goes away soon. Looking at flights to head back to Koh Lanta, Hua Hin and visit Bangkok for the first time.
I liked staying near CMU. It’s close to a lot without Nimman prices. I’ll probably stay somewhere in the old city next time though, mainly to avoid airplane noise. I’m not into motorbikes, I can’t handle them safely. That is one thing I like about Bangkok over Chiang Mai, especially if I’m staying close to the BTS or Sky Train. There are many [somewhat] pedestrian friendly areas throughout the suburbs of Bangkok that would be great for people looking for something different than Nimman but with comparable conveniences. I prefer Chiang Mai for living, Bangkok for visiting. I think Bangkok is harder for people to assess due to scale and many people go with the easier option.
Hey Brett, great video! In my only time in CM, I stayed a couple of nights in the old town, which was awesome, went for a walk around Niman and knew right away that this was not the place for me. Instead, I stayed at a wonderful condo, more like a resort setting, next door to Central Festival Mall. Which is only 5-10 minute right by the Baht Bus. And there is a free shuttle from Central Festival to Niman multiple times a day. Cost for that wonderful brand spanking new condo? 12K Bahts (for 1 month, could have easily gotten that to 10 even 8-9K/mo if I staying longer). Can't wait to return to CM and I know I'll be staying in that same condo complex upon my return! How are things in CM nowadays? Thanks my friend, keeper posting those awesome content! Merry Christmas and Happy New Years!
Great video Brett. Right on point as always. Always delivering fact and reality blended with common sense. Need to figure out how to best adapt to sourcing income online so that I can work anywhere, including Chiang Mai. Thanks again for always being real. Cheers.
Hi Brett. You did a video about finding cheap condos in Chiang Mai. It was great! Do you think you could do a similar one for houses/places with their own private garden. Location is not so important at all. I have a number of older American friends who also just want a quiet place with a garden to work in. Love your videos.
I thoroughly enjoy your straightforward assessment of the different areas of Chang Mai. It was interesting to learn how the areas have changed over time and how Covid-19 has impacted “business as usual.” Hope you had some sunscreen on that dome of yours! Cheers from Southern California, stay safe mate!
Its practically empty now😲 I was in Chiang Mai 2019 and that area was always teeming with people. I like you always avoided going there. So many cheaper areas to live. Coffee shops that are cheaper are practically in all parts of the city.
Brett, thanks for an excellent walk-around. Chiang Mai seems to have its own charm, calm and quite and very unlike Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya. Personally, I find Niman area quite posh and appealing that an extra $200 a month on rent would be worth it. Its a bit more organized and little westernized which is pretty good. I know its a popular place for Digital Nomads but how do you rate Chiang Mai for western retirees (as opposed to usual Hua Hin, Pattaya - Jomtien- Naklua, Phuket and Bangkok) ?
I didn't like staying in Nimman. It's much quieter in the Old Town at night and is better for healthy sleep. Nimman can get noisy with those bars with locals sitting outside all night and lots of motorbikes riding around all night. Plus, food places are more densely packed in the Old Town, so it's more choice what to eat without having to ride a motorbike at night. Not to mention those lady bars are close to Old Town hehe :)
im one of those who would choose to not use a motorbike on a daily basis, so i would stay in the upmarket area and pay more. i also would prefer to stay where there's more foreigners.
Very good Brett, and thanks again for honest, no BS bottom-line. I got more out of your first 10 mins as I could get watching a couple of hours of the typical cookie-cutter vlog. Were many of the Nomads in Nimman doing pretty well income wise or just surviving? Perhaps if nomads were making $3k+ a month another $600/mo seemed reasonable for the address?
Been ploughing through your vids as I'm considering relocating to CM, how do you get on with all the pollution when they crop burn, do you leave the area or stay there? Read it has the worst air quality in the world for a few months which puts me off a bit.

Is it safe to learn and ride a motorbike there? I am 64 years old and I have no previous experience with motorbike. Is there additional motorbike license in on top of driver's license?
Doing great was coming back to CM last time when that crazy air pollution thing hit, i told myself I'll stay for 2 months in turkey (İstanbul) to wait the storm out, and never left since, I'm in turkey for like 3 years now. Its awesome here just people doesn't speak english you'll need to make real effort to have a decent social life, but so far so good. I'll visir CM again at some point for sure.
I stayed in Nimman in Dec 2019 and I liked it but it was kinda dead. Went down to Warm up Bar and Beer Lab and nothing going on. Loved my Condo which was a new Building behind Salad Concept and one Soi South. Crossing the Street to go to Subway was really dangerous. Never made it to Old City to Party ( my fault). However, I did 3 Bike Tours which were a lot of fun. Weather was unbelievable in Dec ‘19. Nice and cool and Sunny. And 10 years ago I stayed just North of Old City and I had a Motorbike. However this trip particular trip (Dec2019)I saw the Police pulling over Foreigners on Motorbikes by CM Zoo before going up the Mountain so therefore I never rented a Motorbike because I heard the Police would give Foreigners a Fine if they didn’t have a Thai drivers license or an International drivers license. I still see Vids of Farang on motorbike but no one ever mentions whether or not Police still pull you over. Next time I will stay in Old City and see more. I really wanted to explore good Coffee Shops and Nightlife. I see Vids of the Vloggers going to all these cool places and I’m shocked I never ran across these cool places. I was on my own and never really found my way around like I do in BKK. I still had fun but coulda been better
If the Co-Working cafes charge around 200Bt per day, do they offer weekly, monthly or morely discounts and can you pay for half a day (or even by the hour)? Whenever I've paid for (ahem) "services" in Thailand, Short-Time has always carried a higher rate than Long-Time, relatively.
@@brett_dev Thanks. Wow. Phaeng. Two-thirds the cost of accommodation. You'd need to be hitting it daily (and productively) to warrant not adopting the pay-as-you-go plan (which would also allow you to butterfly from one cafe to another, as the fancy took you). IMHO.
Let's assume the digital nomads return to CM in the next two years. Where will they go? Will there be a new hotspot other than Nimman. Sad to see the demise of Punspace Nimman. Spent 6 months working there in 2018. I think the other two are still going.
