I read Anna Karenina earlier this year. Never have I ever found myself changing my opinions about a character within the space of a few pages. If a book can do that, perhaps we can be more open minded about the people we come across in real life?
Part 8 was mind blowing. I found myself exclaiming out loud as Tolstoy, via Levin, put into words my own thoughts...or had they been put there by Tolstoy during the previous 700 pages?!!

Anna Karenina has been on my TBR list for a very long time. I’m going to start reading it in April. I’m glad you got over being intimidated by the big books and read it. I just finished Les Miserables and LOVED it. I also read The Count of Monte Cristo a few years ago so big books doesn’t bother me. War and Peace is also on my TBR list this year. I also am excited to read Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov. My reading list this year is HUGE!!

I have just recently finished Anna Karenina. What a story! I agree with you about the characters. They actually feel like people I know, not just figures Ive read about. I'm older and have experienced many of the life events in the book and Tolstoy describes these all in a heart-wrenchingly beautiful way that I deeply relate to.
    This novel is everything!

Carolyn your video is utterly charming from beginning to end. Really picked up on what you said about Levin, how compelling & complex he is throughout the novel. He is very flawed but also a strong iconoclast, standing apart from the mainstream when the pressure to conform must have been overwhelming. Your insights were wonderful and subtle. I love her dialogue. The social engagement is on such a higher level than what is heard today. Nobody uses the filler word “like” or the repetitive words in vogue at any given time. Many of her characters possess a higher vocabulary so are able to not only be more clear but far wittier.

I feel you! It was one of my first Russian classics as well. I'm currently rereading it and Tolstoy's passages on art and death are the best in my opinion.I started noticing some flaws due to my habit of overanalyzing things, but that's ok. I'm not a Levin fan anymore, though I empathized with him 6 years ago. I'm less forgiving of him being a 19th century man and last year I learned too much about Tolstoy's life to admire him. He wasn't the man I wanted him to be. Oh well...
I still enjoyed most of his works. One of my favorite ones was his Confession, oddly enough considering the previous paragraph. One of the reasons some people compare Tolstoy and Dostoevsky is that both of them were not afraid to ask the most important questions and to actually look for the answers instead of accepting the ones offered by others.
You artwork is stunning, by the way!

Levin is the thinking woman's Darcy. :p
Seriously though, I liked the contrast between him and Anna. Levin went off and created his own happiness through effort and time. Anna seemed to keep looking for it, as if it's something that just happens to people in a moment, without prolonged effort.

Jane Eyre uprooted my entire rating system , and knock other books down. 😂 it’s difficult not to compare other books to your favorite. Anna Karenina is on my tbr list, more excited to read after seeing this. ❤

I am a 53 year-old lifelong bibliophile and just read Anna Karenina for the first time year. It was a life-changing read for me, as well. I am now enjoying Crime and Punishment and am now loving Russian literature.

It's always great to see and hear how books can change one's life. I'm also glad I discovered Anna Karenina. Can't wait to hear both your perspectives on this classic masterpiece.

I love to see the joy in your face as you describe the character of "Levin" in ANNA KARENINA. That is the way I felt long ago when reading Salinger's portrait of "Franny Glass" in his FRANNY & ZOOEY novel. Of course, It doesn't rise to the level of Classic, but Salinger's writing creates a wonderful sense of intimacy and affection around his characters. As far as Classics go, there's nothing to match Herman Melville's masterpiece MOBY DICK!

Yeah. I think this a groovy bookish topic. It will be fun to see what you have to say about 'Anna Karenina' and the other books you are thinking about down the road. 😃
Another thought here - I finished 'The Cossacks' awhile back. I love what Tolstoy did with that book.

Your taste in literature is the same as mine. Anna Karenina is my favorite book as well. My other favorites are Pride and Prejudice, East of Eden, 1984, Great Expectations, Caesar ( Shakesphere) , and anything Oscar Wilde. My goals are to read more Russian novels and more Dickens this year.

Did you know that Tolstoy was one of the first animal rights activists. He was a big party of shaping the vegan Philosophy and was strictly against the exploration of sentient beings.

I reread Anna Karenina this month and I was surprised at how different my reaction to it was this time around. I read it first as a teenager and really romanticized Anna’s love story 😬- definitely did not read it that way this time. I also noticed Levin and Kitty much more this time and walked away really appreciating him especially. This experience has made me want to revisit other books I read when I was younger.

Loved this video! Reading war and peace now and I only have a few hundred pages left and I can already say with certainty that this is my favorite book of all time. It's so epic, dramatic, tragic and romantic all at once. I really look forward to be reading Anna Karenina soon! Also the way you feel about Levin is pretty much how i feel about Prince Andrey lol😅🥰

Anna's character in last few scenes in the movie triggered me I don't know why? I felt Iike I know what she was feeling on the screen. And this connection Iam feeling with her is actually scaring me. Many have been commenting that movies adaptation (Kiera Knightley one) is not correct, so I really want to know what was going on by reading, but now Iam scared to go through this book, after what I saw and felt in movie because reading will have stronger effect I know for sure.

Does anyone know if Anna karinina and war and pice don’t is tiny writing? Like Jane Austen’s tiny book font? That’s why I DNFed the 6 books and I only read to of them so I might read the other 4 maybe in 20 or 30 years.

Yesss I loved this video idea so much! I started reading Anna Karenina recently and so far I'm in love! I hope you never shut up about Anna Karenina haha Also I'd just love to see more videos in this series! For me, one of the books that comes to mind as to which book has changed my life would probably be Great Expectations. I could talk for hours about that book alone (Joe as a character is so precious to me!) and Dickens' writing? I'm completely in love.
I don't have many close friends to discuss bookish things with so seeing your videos pop up really brightens my day! Thanks so much for creating these wonderful videos and happy 10k!
