I love everything about Ripley 8's characterization in the movie. All the little details included that says she's a hybrid. Sure there's the extra strength and agility, but then her vest that just happens to resemble the chest and shoulders of the Xenomorphs. to her swimming the way the aliens do in the underwater sequence. And then there's her attitude. Everyone else is crouched and creeping warilly, and she's just striding through confidantly. Just an entirely "I'm so done with this" approach to a station now crawling with xenomorphs.

One fun fact that you missed is that Sigourney Weaver actually made that reverse basketball shot for real. The look of shock on Ron Pearlman's face was 100% real and they couldn't hold the shot longer because he basically went from shock to "man, that was awesome".
I love the Alien franchise and originally, I thought this was a weird and quirky Alien movie. It wasn't my favorite. Over time it has grown on me and, as with most of the Alien movies, I have a preference toward the Director's Cut or extended cut in this instance.

I remember Sigourney Weaver talking about this fact when she went on her promotional late night talk show tour. The plan was originally to have it only look like sh3 made the shot and she did do several takes beforehand. But the take that wound up in the movie, she just happened to sink perfectly. Because the ball did go out of frame slightly she wanted to make sure everyone knew she made the shot herself and get the props she rightly deserved.

All four movies are distinct in tone and style. 'Alien' is a tense monster/haunted house movie set in space, and is a masterpiece of science fiction horror. 'Aliens' is more of an big budget action movie, but it just didn't feel as claustrophobic to me as 'Alien' did. 'Alien 3' definitely had it's own vibe, feeling more like a character study, especially when viewing the extended cut. It is dark and violent, but I don't think that it gets the credit it deserves. 'Alien Resurrection' is just a flat out popcorn horror movie, and there is nothing wrong with that. The action is taught, the characters are great, if not a little over the top, and it is visually appealing. The end result is four different, but worthwhile movies that you can pick from depending on your mood. Honestly, I grab 'Alien Resurrection' fairly often because it is just so damn fun!

Alien 1, 2 and 3 are epic movies. Each follow up the ladder and changes its tone to be something special on its own. Alien 1 is a lone survivor story. Alien 2 is an action masterpiece and Alien 3 the aftermath of both. Here Ripley is tired of the Xenomorph race and the fight for survival and welcomes the end after losing everything.

BONUS FACT: And I guarantee that Minty did not include it as most of us fans already know this one...
CGI was going to be used for the scene in which Ripley throws teh Basketball directly into the net - But the Shocked and Amused faces you see on screen are GENUINE as when they went to film the scene - Sigourney Weaver threw the ball over her shoulder and IT WENT STRAIGHT IN!!!! So instead of CGI, They just used that shot and said STUFF IT!
I do prefer Resurrection to Alien 3... While it does fail on many points - It was a genuinely exciting movie overall - Popcorn fodder for sure, but it did it well!
No Alien Movie can ever compare to the HORROR of the first... Or the All out action of the second... That simple - You have to take them as they come and realise that we can never recapture the magic that was the first two... So as long as they do entertain, They are doing the job! And for what its worth - Aline 3 and Ressurection BOTH ENTERTAINED ME!
Now if I can just invent that Mind Eraser from MiB and REMOVE the Memory of the AvP Series... I will be happy! (Maybe I should erase the Prequels too? I still think Dark Horse did a better job with the Alien Mythos... Until they also went for the Space Jockey creating them... The idea they were UNNATURAL but HAD PREDATORS was a great idea to me!!!)

To answer your question about why they didn't just go to one of the previous planets from the franchise to get more aliens.. It's the same planet in the first two movies. In both cases the aliens come from eggs found inside the crashed mystery ship which is not too far from the new colony in the second movie. Since that colony gets nuked at the end of that movie (theoretically taking the mystery ship with it?) the source of aliens from the first two movies is gone. Then in the third movie, the aliens were from eggs that came with the queen who secretly escaped from colony nuking. By then end of that one, both aliens are killed. So by the time of Alien Resurrections, the known sources of aliens at that point where all destroyed.

The android was originally Ripley. This movie copied the novel but changed a lot (I can't remember the name, I think it was Earth Hive)
The original story was far better as it made more sense and was ironic when you remember how Ripley felt about androids and one day discovered she was one.
At the end of the second movie when Ripley went into cryostasis, her mind and thoughts were copied by Weyland-Yutani and transmitted to Earth while she was asleep.
Earth became a wasteland with hives all over, so they built an android Ripley and uploaded the copy of her mind.

The Ripley character was thoroughly enjoyable, and I could tell Weaver was going all in with her snark and suffering. 1:58 no?! As we have only been to 2 planets, Alien and Aliens are both the same world, WY Corp somehow knew the xenomorph was on lv426 (I'm guessing at the number but it sounds right) that's why the nastromo was stopped there and when they didn't get back a message plans were made to set up a colony with the hope that they would be able to get hold of whatever it was.
The only trace of a xeno on Ripples escape ship was blown out the airlock and in Aliens the nest and everything around it including the spacejockys ship was nuked ""we take off and nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure"" Now as it happened the bases thermal reactor and teraformin plant went thermal nuking itself but if I was Ripple ied have dropped a nuke or 2 on the base as well just to be sure.
Then in Alien 3 WY Corp got hold of an egg casing and a whole suite of bloodwork that infected Ripple had done not knowing it was inside her (it was probably a ping from the bioscanner that made WYC get there so fast).

    1) the "cloning" is laughable in the film, even if you only have a high school bio knowledge of how DNA works. You can't clone a parasite by suing a blood sample from its host. Whedon needed to provide some better technobabble.
    2) Buffy (the movie) wasn't a big hit and the TV series only premiered as a spring replacement in 1997. It didn't get big for a while after that, so it likely played little if no role in Whedon getting the gig.

13:53 Actually, Newt is referenced several times in the scenes from the extended cut of the movie, so it does make sense to hint on her character. Furthermore, it's not completely out of place, regardless the character of Newt. Ellen Ripley is also a character that grew up discovering that monsters are real.

I agree with you, it's a guilty pleasure. But I like it because it's so weird and strange and it has some solid science fiction premises behind it such as Ripley's failed cloning attempts. Sure, it's the third-best Alien movie, but a close third behind Alien and Aliens.

Alien 3: Theatrical Cut = Garbage
Alien 3: Special Edition (aka Workprint Cut) = The film that SHOULD HAVE been released! The special edition is absolutely amazing and makes you REALLY appreciate how deep the 3rd film really is. With 35-40 minutes added back in, it helps develop the characters, story and mood so much more and it gives tons of needed depth to the film that the theatrical cut lacked altogether. The Special Edition makes the film worthy of being the ending to the full trilogy. A lot of folks dont like tragedies, and its understandable in our society of happy endings. But A3 Special Edition justifies itself being a tragedy 100%. After the first time watching it years and years ago, my entire opinion of Alien 3 changed. Growing up as a kid obsessed with the Aliens films... I hated A3 (mainly because I grew up reading the Aliens comics from Dark Horse which continued the adventures of Newt, Hicks and Ripley). But after watching Special Edition, I completely changed my opinion of the film.
Alien Resurrection = film that shouldve stuck to its original script and not gotten rid of the initial idea for the newborn which an all white alien with red veins that sucked the blood out of its victims via its tongue/second mouth... and the film also shouldve kept the AMAZING battle sequence on Earth via Ripley/Call vs Vampire newborn!
To this day, I still prefer Alien 3: Special Edition to Resurrection. I was 16 and in my Sophomore year of HS when it came out. I had a friend who got me a copy of the script before the film came out. I was beyond disappointed with how much was cut from the script (especially the green house chase scene). It literally felt like half the movie had be thrown away. And the updated Newborn was, and still is to this day, the dumbest Xeno idea ever IMO!

I was terrified of the alien series when I was little and I swore to myself that I would never watch any of the movies, ever. That all changed when I was 11/12 watching the trailer for resurrection. I thought the movie looked awesome and watching the aliens swimming in the water was enough to convince me to watch it. I was not disappointed and after watching it I swore to myself that I would watch all the alien movies I missed out on! This movie will always hold a special place in my heart! It was my introduction into the alien series and opened me up to the world of horror!!

My daughter talked me into going to see the second film (Aliens) at the theater. It scared both us, but we thought it a great film. Then when the third movie was in theaters, we went together again and we both intensely disliked it-- In fact, there wasn’t one person in the packed theater .... who didn’t leave without warning those in line to see the film!! Comments of: it stinks, don’t waste your money, hated it, and what a crappy movie!!! The fourth film is a heck of a lot better, than that third waste of time and money.

Ripley saying Newt's quote about monsters at the start of the movie is to reference the monsters cloning her, which we see immediately after she says it. The Aliens aren't the ones using each other for selfish gain, so they're not the real monsters.

This is definitely a “thrill ride” and fun kinda movie, and had it been released in the summer here in US, I believe the box office numbers would have been better!! Releasing this movie end of November, Thanksgiving US Holiday, probably had big holiday box office numbers but that probably quickly fell off due to Christmas holidays taking forefront in the culture.. Summer release is best for Alien movies because of teens going to watch several times being off from school, and adults looking for some escapism whilst said teens are running the streets!! 18:52 James Cameron apparently isn't known for paying attention. By the time that Alien Resurrection released(1997), and before he started on the script for Alien 5... Dark Horse Comics had already been publishing Aliens vs Predator material(1989). In fact, the books Aliens vs. Predator: Prey and Aliens vs. Predator: Hunter's Planet were already out by this point(1994). This wasn't "Fox mashing two properties they own together". This was Fox giving the fans what they wanted, a clash between the titans on the silver screen. Not defending AvP, just that Fox saw potential and decided to give what they thought the fans wanted.

Each movie reflects the decade it was made it. Except maybe 3 which was more the product of a troubled production.
But the first film captured the isolation and atmosphere that space movies of the late 70s captured so well.
Aliens was an all out serious bad-arse action flick that we all loved in the 80s.
Alien 3 was returning to it roots with the first one but initially attempted to adopt religious iconography, which I remember being a fad around the 90s.
But Alien Resurrection is what I refer to as a "99s movie." As in most movies of the latter half of that decade took to the trend of taking horror icons and making them comical and self aware. Just look at all the movie sequels that came out at that time and compare them to their predecessors. Freddy's dead, Jason goes to hell, Escape from LA, Warlock: the armageddon, Army of Darkness, Pet Semetery 2, Demon Knight, etc. They were all made to be popcorn flicks. So even though Resurrection doesn't feel like a proper Alien sequel there's a very good reason for that. It was a product of its time.

  • @marks9233

There is a very clear reason for the line at the beginning, "my mummy always said there were no monsters, no real ones, but there are". It sets a major theme of the whole movie! It refers to the humans, like Brad Dourif's character, team, and the project as a whole, who are monsters by creating horrific genetic combinations with monstrous disregard for the dignity of their creations. Who is more monstrous, Dr. Frankenstein or Frankenstein's monster? This is especially shown with the newborn hybrid, as well as THE ENTIRE SCENE of the Ripley/alien clones, numbers 1 to 7, many of which are horrendously kept alive in suffering. Not sure anyone could miss how awful and monstrous and meaningful that scene was. Trying at all to bring the alien back to life AT ALL could be viewed as a monstrous act. At the time, there was a lot of progress made in cloning and apprehension about human genetic engineering.
I thought it was pretty good up to a point. The basketball scene was pretty good. Ripley played the dual nature pretty well at the beginning, but abandoned the predatory side mostly towards the end. It would have been cooler to see her struggle with both sides continually. Unfortunately, it was just too ridiculous to me to watch the mother alien giving birth through a human reproductive system and the newborn hybrid itself (not really so scary as ridiculous looking, with its little Michael Jackson nose and gaping hips). They brought me out of the theme and entire movie completely, despite Brad Dourif's creepy narration. Yah, if Geiger had his way (and had been credited adding credibility), the baby hybrid's genitalia would have been more horrifying and shocking, truer to the Alien legacy. Separately, the aliens that entered the escaping spaceships at the end were unrealistically CGI and cartoonish, which was something that the other movies mostly did so well to avoid. Alien Covenant does CGI right in that the xenomorphs both virus-born and engineered by David are truly terrifying and believably awful and amazing. Fassbender did a lot to revive the whole Alien world, again. David was most monstrous in Covenant. Too bad that storyline seems to have been sidelined.
No added threat of the spider/ octopus/ scorpion/ ambiguously sexual rapist facehuggers in this one either.
Cole was always set up from the beginning as the most sympathetic member of the crew, so there was no potential or real threat from artificial humans in Resurrection, like Ash, Bishop, or David. The double potential threat and mystery of both alien and AI synthetic gone bad was like a war on two fronts in the best Alien movies. I get the ultimate takeaway that Cole/AI could be more compassionate than actual humans, which is thought-provoking, but that idea didn't palpably add to the movie terror like Mother/Ash or David did.

For me the horror of this movie was Ripley entering the lab where she comes face to face with the failed attempts to clone a hybrid creature using her DNA and the Xenomorphs then discovering an abomination begging her to kill it and end its torment. What a talent Sigourney Weaver is her gut wrenching reactions in this scene leaves no doubt about her acting ability and why she gets the big bucks

  • @filmfiend3190

Even though I loved the Ripley character, and I was excited to see Ripley in another movie, they should of dumbed the Ripley character after Aliens. Think of it like this. Many of the problems with the next two movies was because of what they did with that character.
Having Ripley stuck on a planet with a bunch of rapist prisoners while dealing Newts and Hicks death was just depressing. Also, them bringing her back in Alien Resurrection as this alien slash human hybrid changed the character in unfortunate ways. Also, it gave them the idea of making those other hybrids.
They had an interesting world and creature. They could of made new characters and other ways for those characters run into them. Of course the people in Hollywood might of screwed that up to.

Cloning was a hot-topic at the time which is what drove this movie. Dolly, commonly called the first cloned sheep, was in 1996 so it makes total sense that this movie had cloning themes since it was a product of it's time. The creature at the end screams out 'oh no' and I even hear 'mommy' in there when it looks at Ripley, asking her for help before being sucked out into space. On intial theatrical viewing in 1997 I found the offspring to be a joke and insulting to the Aliens universe. As I have matured I now almost have pity on the new creature and I feel the hurt in Ripley's eyes as it's getting destroyed.
Ultimately I find it a fun adventure 'B' movie with great themes, pretty good writing, and something I can laugh at with the silly nature of it.
