Superb video, thanks for sharing! Sorry about all drama, the crash, puncture, broken Garmin etc but the video was great and interesting to watch! Also, well done on passing that many people after that crash!
Hope you're having a speedy recovery. Your crash was a sad commentary on our society. Here's a rider on hands n knees, then doubled over struggling to breath, and not only did no one stop, I didn't hear anyone even ask if you were alright/needed assistance. Damn
Tough day. I was happy just to finish, nowhere near the front group. Glad to be back on the bike and it was a great day to ride even with the wind and cold start. Hope you’re healing & better luck in the next one!
I did the 60 also. I’m coming back from a while off the bike so still in the rebuilding fitness phase. I started mid-pack and finished there too lol; just enjoyed my ride!
Sorry you had such a bummer of a day and I hope the ribs are ok. We hope you do come back for revenge - We'll also have the Dirty Sheets Gravel Grinder in October that turns around mid-way, close to the start of this event, similar distances
Excellent video, thanks, and the time stamps in the description are fine. I would have liked a short description of the nature / cause of the crash. Also what camera / mount you're using and how was the battery life / management. Kudos for your efforts on the bike and sharing it with us!
Well....... It seems like this race attempt was kind of a comedy of errors and miscues. What with crashing in a pack and then cussing your head off when you flat and blasting through the mud in a neutral zone while others are pushing......Yes. In case you are wondering I have done hundreds of bike races in my life and have been a competitive cyclist since 1990 - so I have some perspective. @@astonrides
Yup it was definitely a comedy of errors 😂 Not sure why any of that means it shouldn’t have been posted. The race was well on after that mud, hence the 15 minute chase.
@@astonrides You did awesome man! Sorry I was just pulling your chain! I think I was a few beers under when I posted..... Keep up the racing and have fun! And keep posting the highlights.....and lowlights! I'll get something posted myself here soon.
Glad you posted this and I can certainly understand the language, which I'm sure was you just speaking a bit out loud to yourself and not at the top of you lungs. Appreciate the down-to-earth non elitist content.
Did no one ever tell you that fingerless gloves are an essential piece of kit for off road riding. your palms are almost always the first thing to hit the deck in a fall.
Honestly so am I. I think I was coming out the saddle slightly to adjust my position at the same time I hit the rock. Took me by surprise for sure! Healing quickly will ride next week 🙏🙏
I was in this race in the same group just towards the back lol That gravel section that he crashed on caused a lot of issues for other riders as well. There were multiple random holes/craters in the ground that are hard to spot if not looking closely, and they aren’t something you could just ride over. My assumption is one of those were the culprit.
@@boostenmkiv Watch again and see the guy in front of me hit a small bump. I think I was adjusting my sitting position, ie coming out the saddle ever so slightly and then the bump bounced me off the hoods. Just bad luck and timing.
@astonrides you popped up on my feed and I recognized the accent😅 Also recognized the agonized breathing🙈 excellent job on the catch-up, bummer about the puncture. Looking forward to watching the rest of your stuff👊
@@astonrides if your frame will allow, I’d def go up to the 45’s. I switched from 38’s to 45’s and it’s a big improvement in grip and comfort. Sorry you wrecked; totally sucks
@uknowbass definitely would’ve helped. I usually run 40+ but didn’t have the option to change them out. Also didn’t have my usual foam inserts which would’ve probably stopped that puncture. Next time💯
@@astonrides agree, but it’s never a guarantee. I just bought the Reserve 34/37 gravel wheels - should be here next week. Will put inserts and Rambler 45’s
Hope you are OK by now. That's why I never was fond of races. Competition causes careless driving. And you miss the basic meaning of cycling, that is enjoying the route, safely at your own pace, with as many stops as you wish. With company or alone. Quit racing my friend, it's an illness, just feeding your ego. You don't need to prove anything to anyone. Nice bike btw.
Started racing ‘cross at 47. It’s fantastic…. Structured training, goal setting, constantly trying to improve… yep, racing provides purpose and context. What’s an illness is the hubris of directing someone to ascribe to your opinions that represent a sample size of 1. Talk about ego…
@@mejdrichjCouldn’t agree with you more. I love racing so I have a reason to train! When I’m not racing my riding is without much purpose or context and I don’t feel much drive to improve.
That was a bizarre crash. I replayed it many times. I don’t think you hit anything. It appears you decided to go from the hoods to the drops with both hands at the same time and missed the hoods. Stop that!
Hahaha. I hear you but there was definitely a bump in the road. Watch again and see the guy in front of me hit it. I think I was adjusting my sitting position, ie coming out the saddle ever so slightly and then the bump bounced me off the hoods
100% this. As a pure roadie before, I used to do this. Simultaneously letting of hands from hoods to drops for fast and smooth transition. Looks and feels cool too. But for gravel riding, bad technique as roads are too uneven and unpredictable. I have freezed frame your vid and you were def reaching for the drops. And probably tether the Garmin cable to your bars too? You’ll come back stronger the next time for sure. Cheers.
@@VonJames-md5dm lol again… not what happened. Caught off guard by a bump while coming out the saddle to adjust. Why would I go for the drops in a 25kph neutral zone? Garmin was tethered until it got ground off.

I've had the same issues with those tires on a rocky descent and never went back to them, Tough day, you're a trooper.
Love the commentary. Gnar move to get back in lead group after that, thats resilience! You'll get 'em next time.
