  • In this video, I will show you different ways of sharpening pastel pencils. I will be using different brands of pencils as each brand has its own hardness of the lead and the consistency of the wood casing, as well as the diameter.
Pencil brands I used in this video are:
    Kohinoor Gioconda
    Stabilo Carbothello
    Derwent pastel pencils
    Conte pastel pencils
    Faber Castell Pitt Pastel pencils
In the video you can see three different ways of sharpening the pencils:
    generic and pastel sharpeners
    craft knife and sandpaper
    Swordfish crank handle sharpener
You can see how different brands of pencils behave with each of these sharpening methods and decide which one suits you best.
Hope this is insightful and if you have any questions or suggestions do not hesitate to leave me a comment below.
You can find more pastels tips and tutorial videos on my channel and long real time tutorials on my Patreon page.

I ordered CarbOthello set of 60's. I'm worried about how to sharpening them glad I found your video I think I'm going to use the automatic sharpener. I can't sharpen with cutter I have weak hands 😂

ty!! I just invested in carbothello set... now for a better sharpener... I use fantastix bullet point blenders, stumps and these do well for me as water soluble with a water brush. the faber castell perfection eraser helps with highlights, and when dry, can be layered with less muddiness even they aren't permanent.

I bought the swordfish and loved it. Then after maybe 100-200 sharpenings it started breaking leads. Now I've gone back to a razor blade and sandpaper
Maybe the blade has dulled, but the replacement blade is nearly as expensive as the whole sharpener!
So, what I'd suggest as a more valid review is to test new, like you did. But then add a durability test where the sharpener has been used for some length of time.
After all, the sharpener is only new on day one of use

@Mike Norton I read another review of someone who uses the swordfish sharpener. She had the same problem that you did, and what she suggested is buying woodless graphite pencils and periodically running them through the sharpener as if you would a pencil. Apparently the graphite lubricates, if you will, the mechanism and then it worked again beautifully after that.

New subscriber here and I’m soooo glad I found your channel! I just got a very nice set of pastel pencils and I have been worried about sharpening them. I’ve gone through like 50000 sharpeners and have become totally frustrated. Glad to know it’s not just me! Thank you for this! 🌺🌸🌻

Some say you should turn the sharpener,, not the pencil so you might try that..

Wow that sharpener is way easier than the craft knife. Why would you use anything else? I love that fine point you got and you do not have to mess with the craft knife. Have you tried the same brand only electric? I cannot find the hand crank one like you have. I checked on Amazon. Thanks for any help you can give me. I just purchased a set of pastel pencils and I'm hoping to find an easy, effective way to sharpen my new pencils.

I think that the electric one is as good as the one I have :) as long as you don't drop your pencils you should not get broken tips

Is it the really the swordfish you recommend or work other brands with the same way of sharpening too?

    • @KatiaKotelnikova
      @KatiaKotelnikova  5 ปีที่แล้ว

other brands work well too but then again it all depends on how fast they get dull and also you have to pay attention to the diameter of the sharpener as well, the one in the video works well for me as I use Carbothellos and Giocondas but for Derwent I would need another model or brand :)

@@jolandadejong9050 didn't have to do it still, as using mostly soft pastels and pencils for details :)
