Ford 6.7 Turbo Diesel No Start condition we've NEVER seen before. First time for everything!

- Time to revisit some more of the diesel work we do around here, this time we're diving into a No Start condition on a Ford F250 with a 6.7 turbo diesel under the hood and rather quickly discover we're battling an issue we have NEVER seen before. Also included, even we professionals make mistakes and we're willing to show it!
Diesel repair work isn't fast and flashy, and it's often quiet stinky but these machines and what they move about are a big portion of what keeps the economy pumping. As the 6.7 Powerstroke came out over a decade ago we're starting to see more and more service work coming for these vehicles. Well if you're in the Columbus Ohio area / Central Ohio area and need diesel repair work, we're more than happy to help! It's not ALL just hot rods and fun rides around here!
So uhhh, anyone else seen this as an issue?
Somebody spiked the punch.
@@USN_Ret- you might be onto something.. 🤔
We use to add transmission fluid to tractors years ago. It would actually make the old ones run quieter
@@brandontittle5762 thing with trans fluid is it doesn't separate from diesel once it's added. And tends to be a much deeper red than this pink
I was going to say it looks like some dropped a little off-road fuel or tranny fluid in it until you pulled the filter off. But nope, that’s something different. Strawberry quick is no good on a cp4. 😂 hell regular US spec ULSD isn’t even good on a cp4.
3:18 the bolt falling out! 😂🤣 if there ever was a sign.
Can’t wait to see what happens here. Good luck to you and the owner of the truck. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed this one Joe, we'll certainly put up a follow up video to this to at least update everyone and answer some questions!
Oh how cool it was to see that bit of white smoke trickle out of the tailpipe. Sinister looking. Never seen that before.
She was certainly a bit smokey and not happy! Kinda cool how you can see the puffs of smoke as the cylinders compress and push.
Probably my favorite thing to witness with a non running diesel engine. Pretty cool to think about the air flow and mechanical side of things as they said in the other comment.
I comment as I watch so I may say things that are found later in the video or I get proven incorrect so just lettin' ya know how I comment. Once when I worked at a dealership in Philly, I did a set of brakes on a supra. We gave it back to the customer and she drove off. I was cleaning my tools for the next job and noticed I had forgotten to put the bottom bolts back in both calipers. She came back saying there was a thumping in the front end. I told her "I bet I know exactly what that is. I'll have it fixed for you no charge in a matter of a couple minutes". I brought it back in, put the bolts in and she looked at me like her hero lol. Oopsies do happen.
Indeed they do, no matter how good we are or how experienced we are, oppsies happen just own it and move on. Part of what we try to show in our videos is the "real world" side of this business that even as professionals mistakes are made and we aren't afraid to show a bit of pie on the face. Fortunately no damage was done to any components in the making of this video!
Yes please! Show us a follow up vid to let us know what the scoop is/was!
Waiting to see if anyone tosses up a winning answer on this one, it certainly through US for a loop! Glad so many people are interested :)
Don’t leave us hanging! I’m going to need a follow up video on this one.
We'll give a resolution oh don't you worry about that! :) Glad so many people are actually interested our diesel stuff doesn't usually get much attention!
Awesome…more powerstroke videos….thank you
We try to squeeze a few of them in here and there among all the other stuff we have going on 😀
Throughout the years we have sent fuel samples to diesel dealerships to have fuel analyzed. The bigger dealerships like Cat and Detroit and Cummins have the ability to analyze fuel and oil to help solve mysteries
Yes indeed a very important bit of information to mention! So, with that said, what do you think caused this fuel issue?
@@LucoreAuto the strawberry milkshake description has me baffled. I’m leaning towards red coolant. I have drained coolant from fuel systems of trucks where the injector cups or o rings have failed. I’m not that familiar with the PowerStroke so I’m not sure how the injector bores are sealed on those.
The way you described the fuel separating from the mystery liquid makes me lean towards coolant.
Do those engines have a fuel heater that uses coolant similar to an oil cooler?
Early 6.7’s had issue with glow plugs breaking off and taking out a cylinder. Defiantly sounds like it has a dead hole. Might check too excessive crank case pressure when cranking. 🤷🏼
You can certainly hear there's something not happy as this thing cranks over, unfortunately you can go down a rabbit hole with that thinking.. and hope it's not something serious. Step 1 though was trying to get this hateful thing actually fired up. And lots of praying.
I`m sure you`ll figure it out, Rich.
Thanks for always believing in us Billy but this one was a head scratcher for a bit ;)
Make sure you keep us updated on this one if the customer says go forward on it !! The mystery!!!!!!
We certainly will keep you all updated, it's not often WE run into something none of us have ever seen before. Probably wouldn't have even shared this video if it weren't for that fact. Inquiring minds need to know!
We live in strange times.....new one on me....30 yrs a tech.... Really would like a follow up on this one....
Indeed! This was certainly not what expected to find and you can kind of hear that in the conversations. Like... what... uhh... what?
I have a 100k mile truck. Sounds the exact same. Just replaced the whole fuel system. Pumps lines, filters, rails, cp4, injectors, everything and also an s&s bypass kit. Dropped and cleaned the tank. Fresh diesel, sounds the same. Brand new batteries, voltage good and even with jumper on starter hangs up like its vapor locking. Pulled the glow plugs, turned it over many times and no evidence of excessive fuel. No water, no smoke, fuel pressure demand and actual basically the same.
When turning over, it hits like its trying to start but doesn't, then engine binds and stops. Had a friend come look at it and he says sounded like the starter is bad. Funny, it has a new starter. But its an ultima select so I just pulled it off and heading back to oreillys to get a motorcraft starter and see if anything changes.
Did you ever figure this out? I am dealing with the same symptoms. Thanks.
@nathananderson6203 I put a new Motorcraft starter on, and it did the same thing. It's not normal to cut the oil filter open when diagnosing, but I wish I would've done so before I spent all that money. The oil filter is full of metal bearing glitter. So I have a seizing bearing. Now I have a ton of money in it and have to find another engine.
@@okhotrodder thank you! I will cut the filter open this week.
Rich I know that several guys where I live are using old trans fluid and filtering it before putting it in there trucks anywhere from 50 percent to 75 percent trans fluid with diesel and it works fine in pre emissions trucks don't know if that's what you got going on. Keep us posted and as always be safe 👍
That had occurred to us as well but that leaves the fuel red and it doesn't sort out. This pink actually sorts out from the fuel when it sits.
@@LucoreAuto just asking would it make a difference what kind of trans fluid or type of fluid
As a mobile service tech I Used just about any kind of oil when field servicing a unit but it was always new. It worked just fine but to actually run one on it long term? I dont think that I would try it on anything after 2000.
@@rayrussell6064 It COULD change the coloring depending on the type of trans fluid but anything we've ever seen won't separate out like this stuff does. Once there's trans and diesel mixed it stays mixed.
@@handyman75657 the incredible thing about a lot of old diesels is they can run on all sorts of things beyond their intended fuels. Certainly not the case with this new fangled stuff, a little bit of water in the fuel or exhaust issue and they FREAK out!
What color is the antifreeze? We have a DD15 at the shop right now with 930,000 miles on it that had cavitation in the injector cups put antifreeze in the fuel system. The antifreeze is red and it has turned into a milkshake in the filter housing with a clear bowl. The engines are known to have injector cup issues but they also have a fuel cooler in the secondary filter base on the engine that will do the same thing and return antifreeze to the fuel tank.
6.7's don't have injector cups and the fuel cooler on the frame rail by the water separator. TYPICALLY you'll get fuel in the coolant but not the other way around.
Change the water/fuel filter? If the tabs on the canister dont meet when you screw the canister back on get vastly reduced fuel flow. Ask me how I know. Throws no codes.
I know here in Iowa farmers who suspect someone is stealing fuel from their bulk tanks will sabotage it.
Ohhh that's a tricky tricky move! Depending on what they are adding to it, can cause some serious damage. Any idea what special sauce they are adding?
@@LucoreAuto I heard it was eggs but not sure if that's true
to me the pink milk shake is just water in off road diesel(recently cleaned my fuel tank). would have been nice if they did a follow up video
I'll make sure I don't bring my Truck in There for Service Thanks for the heads up Pal
What was the diagnosis of the pink milkshake?
What’s the outcome? How do I find the follow up video?
Part 2 ??
Good old Ford Diesel. Rich she is smoking but she ain't stroking 😂😂
Was there a follow up? I cant find anything.
Come on man!! You can’t keep us hanging like that!! WHAT IS THE MILKSHAKE!!!!!
Since so many people are interested we'll be sure to address this in a follow up video, normally most people aren't much interested in our diesel fixin stuff!
Pepto bismal lol. Please keep us updated on the outcome.
It very well could be ATF. The Fuel cooler and Transmission cooler are on the secondary cooling system. What does the secondary coolant look like??
Or coolant from fuel cooler? Is the coolant red like heavy duty coolant?
I’m stuck in the same situation
Time for a locking fuel cap
So , What was the outcome ?
Looks like pepto bismol to me, maybe someone thought it had a belly ache. Lol
That's exactly what I (Austin) said! It's Pepto Pink!
I had a customer that went through 6 pumps in a period of 2 years even tho he was only putting 20 thousand miles a year on it. Then his Ford tractor went down and it was getting maybe 20-40 hours a year on it. I eventually found that he was using a 500 gallon above ground gravity feed tank for his fuel supply and he was using all kinds of different types of oil that he would mix in a 250 gallon tote. That included old hydrolic and transmission oil. He was also adding cooking oil to it from his commercial cooking wagon. You talk about a mess? He paid dearly for his ignorance... He had been listening to the web??? Partially anyway.
I did find one time where a customer had done his own service and pinched a return line and it caused a severe starting issue.
Red algae contaminated fuel ?
Somebody has enemies
Ohhh? What makes you think that? 🤔
@@LucoreAuto I grew up in a shop in the 70s, cleaned out a lot of fuel tanks.
Isn’t off road fuel red
It's definitely not PINK!
...okay, now I'm curious,hmm...
So were we! Get the gears a moving in that mind!
😎 !!
Always appreciate the support Sir!
@@LucoreAuto Not everyone has the voice and story telling ability. You and Bill Hoskinson have it ?
@@Amxracer That's high praise indeed, Bill certainly has a great grasp of story telling and editing. Thanks for including us :)
That’s nestle strawberry quick all day long
It sure as heck looks like it! And it separates out from the diesel fuel ...
So what happened
And don't leave your records in the sun.
Good rule of thumb :)

@@thisisyourcaptainspeaking2259 Just when I think I'm cultured, sliding in the comments with something I've NEVER heard before!
Did he say put an engine it due to high mileage hahaha wow
it is not pink it is purple farm fuel.
We thought that too at first but when it sits the cor sorts out from the diesel fuel
Someone dosed that truck
You're not that finicky, no fender cover
Why dont you answer all the questions ? Wtf happened. ?
What's your question? It's hard to keep up on questions and comments across 600 plus videos
what was the final diagnosis with the 6.7? i was very anxious to hear how things finished up ..... sorry if i seemed pushy......thanks in advance and keep up the great videos.@@LucoreAuto
Where is second video ? How did you resolve the problem? What was the issue? I have same problem and no answer
Im having the same problem but not anything with milkshake issue
Gasoline in the fuel
it knows the problem its a ford
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Farm fuel
Good guess, but nope! The pink sorts out from the diesel when it sits
My guess would be a ex girlfriend or wife spiked his fuel tank lol. Don't ask me how I know I got spiked with atf in a zr2 s10 4.3 bad deal.
You might be onto something with this thought, but what would it be spiked with? It couldn't be ATF these things can burn ATF
@@LucoreAuto Man ain't no telling , maybe windshield washer fluid?? They do also make a red antifreeze!!!
@@shoresharp8349 they do indeed! ;)
Just put an engine in it?????? WTF kind of shop is this total BS find out what the issues are and fix it right. Oh yea, we don't have mechanics anymore just parts changers.
