    That's one Awesome Bug & the fact that it's a father & sons build just makes it even cooler. Great job guys & gals, having the ok & backing from significant others is a big plus both financially & spiritually.
    Once again, Awesome Job!

    Great story.
    Similar with my youngest Son, he acquired a 1956 oval window beetle as a rusty shell when he was 14. His build took 3 years and went on to be one of the main feature articles in an edition of the Australian volkswagen magazine and also inspired him to start & complete his University studies - Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering. He is now a Mechanical Engineer.

    Great video, GREAT BUILD!!!And to top it off, the 8 year +(including the rail build)bond with your sons!!! You're a blessed man, and there are many more life lessons your sons have learned than just building a car that will come into play as they grow into the grown men that you have set the mold for. There's a special place in eternity for a man like you.

    a beautiful build ... that's the way a bug should be build .... and look alike ....no weird stuff like V8 in the rear .... simple , but really nice bug .... for me this is exactly what's all about bugs , they jump really well .... blessed the fact that you spent a lot of time teaching a your son how to work .... not only priceless , but also , no one can ever take it away from you ... I wish my son had so much interest and patience .... God bless !

    Great Job--My son and I work on VW as a Hobby I we started going to vw shows with his 1978 bus when he was just 3 years old; when he turned 12 we pulled it off the frame for a complete redo--Mike Yager at Mid-America helped us with parts; he 29 now helping me with my 1967 bus --we have had and still create life time memories with our air cooled VW's

    i still remember going to silver lake michigan to get parts for out old bugs off the shelf, we would get lots of looks from people in our fairly stock old slugbugs, and in supper there was a line over a mile long chicks sunbathing on the roofs of cars and every kickass toy u could imagine waiting their turn to play on the dunes. I never build a full blown baja bug though, maybe someday i might

    I'm glad I came across this video. Your build came out awesome! I had been searching for a red Tamiya Sand Scorcher buggy build which is a 1/10 scale Rc model. I planned on painting it red but could not find one done in the same paint as yours, it made me think it may not look good red. Seing your build is what I needed to commit to the all red body. It looks awesome and when I'm done with mine it should look a lot like this... Thank you for the inspiration, very nice! 👍 When I'm done it will be on my channel for sure! 👊😎

    i switched to duals on my bugs when i had em, went from fixing manifold leaks to synconizing and linkage adjustment, but the 32/36 was a good setup as long as it wasn,t cold out, the dual webers annoyed lots of people though, i ran a later model fuel injected muffler so it sounded stock till you revved it then it made that weber bark and before I knew it there were new speedbumps everywhere in my neighborhood

    6 years later I would love to see what it looks like now!!! Now my dream bug same ride stance but 4x4 with a bullet proof Ls love vw's but hard to beat the easy turn key of a modern day LS motor and the bug would be a rocket

    • @arkansaswookie
      @arkansaswookie 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I got the chance to ride in my friends LS powered 71 VW baja, built with long travel suspension, and holy crap when he put his foot down on the gas pedal, my skull slammed into the head rest, and i swear we were full on skeletons for a few seconds because there was so much ridiculous horsepower, that the flesh came off of our bodies.Whatever V8 powered muscle car that was in the lane next to us making wisecracks about the baja, got fully roasted when the light turned green I've been in a lot of fast cars in my life, but nothing as light and powerful as that thing.

    Nice bug! I've had several over the years but never got to build one like I wanted to, which is pretty similar to your build.
    I learned to drive in a bug, well actually learned to drive on a bug frame since we pulled the body off and bolted up some brackets and stuff to support the steering wheel column, use a 2 gal lawn mower fo the gas tank. The engine was assembled by my Dad and I, it had the 92mm big bore kit on it so I believe it was an 1835cc also added dual port heads and a single progressive carb on it. I believe it was a Weber, but it ran on 1 barrel, and the 2nd barrel kicked in manually at around 3/4 throttle.
    My Dad decided to remove the starter stating that if you have to push start it every time you stall it out you'll learn how to use the clutch and drive a standard shift, allot faster. That was a bit tough but it was VERY effective.
    Ended up putting a Karmin Ghia body on it latter.
    Sure wish I had those now, it was a blast.

    What a great looking car! I'm really surprised after all that time and hard work on the thing that you would put a garbage Pinto carb on to it. Those carbs are well known to be a tuning nightmare, take it off and throw a set of duals on there. You will get way better tunability, more power, and better fuel economy.

    I seen that these link pin beams bolt directly to the vw bug stock head frame. I currently have a 1974 Baja bug with the front uncut with stock bj beam. My question is could someone ever fit a link pin beam without cutting the front end and making it fiberglass. I was looking at +6 inch wider and +8 inch taller beams and was just wondering could it ever go one there with the stock front uncut and some fabrication. if it’s possible I’ve never seen anything done on this? Any help is appreciate.

    I see that you have "heater" in your set of switches. What, if in fact, are you using for heat?

    • @willow450
      @willow450 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      the way vw did it was with heat exchangers on the engine which transfered engine heat to these pipes that ran up to the blower motor. These would heat up with the engine and give you some heat inside the car. A really old school way was having a gasoline burning heater inside of the car, I don't think they used them past the 1950s cars as you can imagine it wasn't very safe.

    • @Vgrizzw
      @Vgrizzw 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +supercowmoo3
      If you read my question I refer to an electrical switch labeled "heater" on his dash. I would be willing to bet that he didn't add servos to the heater boxes (most vw bajas discard heater boxes anyway) and I doubt it ignites an eberspacher gas heater (wouldn't want that in an open "trunk" of a baja). I was wondering if he had experience with a 'good' electrical heat source, which I've never had....or what that switch is even referring to?

    • @prtyof4156
      @prtyof4156 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Grizz Ly I'm guessing it's for the intake manifold heater he talks about, that helps the engine run without icing over the intake manifold.

    I know this is a old build. But I’m building a 1962 Baja that’s a original California car. No rust. It’s a 70’s build and sat for many years. I’m going to build with a 6in wider beam and trailing arms. Who built the tube front clip? I’m a fabricator but don’t have a tube bender. I would like to just buy the tube front clip. I found a company that builds a 10 point cage for a beetle. Be nice to buy a front clip and connect it to the inside cage. I hope someone can answer this on a 8yr old video..Thanks
