I cannot leave links because youtube deletes links. Here are the names that can be easily searched on here. Grind Stone Ministries, Cajun Navy Relief, Perma Pastures Farm, Bear Independent (he is the creator and president of Grind Stone Ministries), Western NC Operation Mountain Relief, On Three, The Benghazi Rabbit and many churches. Ramdino, they officially closed all trails to Katahdin including the AT at 1pm on October 14. I got to the ranger station at Katahdin Stream Campground at around 4:30 pm. They never reopened the trail and then announced the fall season closure on 10/17. Many hikers were hoping it would reopen with the impending warming trend, but park officials did not. It was disappointing because we thought it would reopen for the weekend at least to let the last hikers reach the summit.

I ran into a few younger hiker’s on the AT in Vermont and I ask them why they were so late and they essential said they jerked around and took to many days off. Everyone knows how the trail works. Hike your own hike but know there are repercussions for not taking care of business. They close the mountain for a reason. This is nothing new.

@@mtadams2009 Yeah, I agree with this. This is going to be a shocker for hikers, but the park staff isn't just there for them. Reminded of that guy who set the trail record and celebrated with popping bottles of champagne and the ranger promptly gave them all citations and they were all like we just did this amazing thing how could you do that? Well, it's his job, he's not there to coddle hikers, not to keep it open until you show up, I suspect if hikers were to spend a week in park rangers shoes they'd see the other side of things. I admire through-hikers but sometimes they think they can get a little self-absorbed...

I've been doing day hikes over the last month or so between ~ Bear's Den to SNP just inside the border* Have run into two through-hikers doing the HF to Katahdin, then flipping down to Springer and return to HF. Wed Oct 16 I ran into "PUZZLES" an older guy with a large backpack. Actually, gave him a ride from Front Royal to the trailhead at Trumbo Hollow/I66 not an inconsiderable road walk. I asked him about his pack, he replied "If I buy an UL pack then I'd have to buy UL equipment" I laughed. He also said he was just going to get to the Manassas Gap shelter, maybe 2-3 miles in from the highway. For someone who's got maybe a week to go to finish, he's taking his time: the pure of heart! :^) I made a comment to him that by virtue of making it north of the Helene destruction in time, he might be the last contiguous day through-hiker... but then a week later Oct 23rd ran into "DOCTOR SRIRACHA" who was doing the same HF->K S->HF flipflop, had an interesting conversation asked her about blowdowns etc. (mentioned some blow down around the Weary Feet hostel but of course, all that info is stale by now) so maybe she'll be the last contiguous day through-hiker! (unless she passes PUZZLES, tee-hee) *back in 1976 hiked south to Blacksburg from Dickey Ridge in SNP so happy moment for me to "tag-up" where Dickey Ridge hits the AT. Anyway, might repeat some of this next time if anyone is interested in PUZZLES and/or DOCTOR SRIRACHA, I'll presume they've finished their through-hikes now by climbing the stairs to the Rabbit Hole restaurant :^)

Unless a washed-out or destroyed portion of the Appalachian Trail is posing a significant threat of a future down slope landslide that will threaten human lives, residences, or businesses, then federal monies should be spent on rebuilding infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and communications nexuses in order to restore some semblance of normalcy back to those areas of Appalachia that Hurricane Helene devastated.
I'm well aware of the tourist dollars that day hikers and through hikers on the Appalachian Trail bring to the hundreds of towns and communities located adjacent to the Trail. That being said, until those communities, the businesses located within them, and especially the roads servicing those communities that depend on Appalachian Trail income for survival, are restored to a point where daily/weekly/monthly truck resupply is a reality, then those communities are of little use to anyone utilizing the Appalachian Trail for recreational purposes.

It definitely seems like the closure of trail towns has had an impact on the SOBO hikers. It's a tough situation for everyone involved!

@@Burner62984 they have in fact not. I am pretty sure I am one of the few who did stop. Every single other sobo I met said flat out they don’t care and will keep going until they are turned back by rangers or police.

Wow, thanks so much Ramdino! I really appreciate this video. Great informing video. I'm hoping to get on the AT as a Thru-Hiker in 2026. I fell last year and got a Herniated Disc, had surgery in December and my Herniated Disc came back. Unfortunately I'm also a fall risk. So I'm hoping to recover from this one without having repair surgery. As soon as I'm able I'm going to hit the trails backpacking. So my goal is the AT for 2026!!
I'm sending positive vibes daily for all the devastation from Helene and Milton. I have family in SC so I try to keep up that way.
Thanks for all you do Ramdino!! I sure appreciate you and I'm sure I'll see you out there eventually!!
