HEADS UP TO ANY NEW PS5 OWNERS OR ASTRO USERS - At the Audio Output screen, you may not be able to switch the HDMI Device type from TV to AV Amplifier as the option will be grayed out. The steps in this video are backwards. Skip that step and go down to OUTPUT TO HEADPHONES and switch it from ALL AUDIO to VOICE CHAT AUDIO. This will unlock the HDMI Device menu where you can now select AV Amplifier.
This didn't work for me any other suggestions?

The headset manufacturer doesnt need a PlayStation license to use USB. That's Xbox. The Astro Mixamp was designed for consoles with an optical audio port, which Sony decided not to include. Astro is just trying to do what they can to not make the $150 purchase people made for the Mixamp not a complete waste

@@davidsimpson9771 again, blame playstation for not including an optical audio port or not buying the Dolby license to let you use Dolby Atmos for headphones. Astro is trying to make sure the headsets people may have already bought for their PS4 is usable with Dolby audio.

Please make a hdmi 2.1 port like the ps5 have, not like the ps4 hdmi 2.0 port yes sound is good but picture quality is just as important. You guys are one of the top brands and I am sure you guys can do this. I'm a big fan of astro and one day will own a pair of the legendary a50 headphones but come on guys.
All these cables to get sound from my tv and headsets is insane but thank you this works. I play horror games on my twitch channel and have ppl watching in person so now they can hear the game instead of me just hogging the sound. Makes no since but the Astro A50 I have on my Xbox series X works find sound in tv and system. Thank you PlayStation for making this difficult.
I had the same problem as a lot of people on here.
If you are having the problem where you can’t hear unless you have it set to all audio All I did as stupid as it sounds was to plug the mix amp to a usb on my extension cord rather than the ps5 then I connected it back to the ps5 and it started to work perfect like explained on this video

Guys check you might just have it muted on the little black thing that’s attached to the cable from the headphones there’s a little mute up and down button

Dolby Atmos on console is a gimmick and I don't know why they did it. To answer your question, it's Dolby Audio. That's the same as the older style named "Dolby Audio". You can thank some fudd at Sony for trying to reinvent the wheel 😂.

Why aren't TH-camrs showing people how to achieve this same thing without the adaptor. It gives you all the audio benefits and doesn't limit your HDMI to 2.0 rendering your 2.1 useless.
How might one achieve this? If it's via the TV's optical out (if it has one) - I tried this method, but on the Sony X89J the sound coming from the optical was noticeably worse than via a USB wireless dongle in one of the rear PS5 ports (using an Arctis Pro Wireless). Not sure what's happening to the sound inside the TV when it comes back out of the optical port, but it sounds compressed or messed with in some way.
@@sparxies you have to do two things. Use the optical cable that came with the A40's and also set the TV sound to pass-through. This allows the sound to pass through the TV and let the mix amp do its thing instead of the TV.
@@sadistic_veteran Thanks for the info, my TV was set to passthrough, but only compressed audio, so there's more settings to fiddle with on the TV so it passes through the digital source without any compression (will vary from TV to TV) - after looking into this a bit more, there's also something else you have to do for this as well. Set the PS5 HDMI audio out to amplifier (not TV) then set the audio out to playback bitstream - then it will pass Dolby Digital to the TV and the TV will pass the Dolby Digital back to the headphone DAC and you should get the best quality (surround) sound. Unfortunately I haven't tested this as I sent back the Arctis Pro due to the headphones not sounding any better than my Blackshark V2 Pro's, but now I might try the Astro A50s with this setup and see if it's any better!
@@sparxies You are correct on all accounts my fault for assuming all other settings were done correctly. I use my A40's every day as I prefer wired head sets. The A50's are the same just wireless. The settings you listed are exactly what I use for my PS5 and TV.
@@sadistic_veteran Thanks for confirming - I completely missed the PS5 audio output side, I just thought it would output a nice digital audio signal to the TV as standard, but the PS5 does its own 3D audio to TV, which is where I went wrong.
I am going to order the Atro A50 and see if it's better than my Blackshark V2 Pro, which has amazing sound (and tight bass) on my PC wirelessly, but the settings for that don't carry over to the PS5 - still sounds better than the Arctis Pro even with better settings saved to the headset and fiddling with the inline DAC.
I think the Blackshark V2 Pro is seriously overlooked - tested both the Arctis Pro Wireless and Blackshark with multiple sources and FLAC audio via PC, then different games on PS5 and the Blackshark sounded better in every test.
Now let's see what the Astro A50 can do! Looking forward to seeing if the Dolby Digital direct to headset makes a huge difference. Thanks again for the advice!
I connected mix amp into ps5 USB and that’s it haha works like a charm
So I don't need an adpator and all that shit? I can just plug and play? I have one for the Xbox and it required an update before using. I have been hesitant on buying this mixamp
@@mr.gameandteach7197negative. For the ps5 you need the adapter. You can run it without it, but won’t get the full crisp Dolby audio, it’ll just be a mono headset like every other one on the market.
The adaptor should come with the headset and charge more but great video. Right to the point and helped a ton. Thanks for posting this.
The headset came out way before the adapter that’s why it’s separate . The adapter wasn’t needed on old gen
They're still making the headset though so you'd think they'd either add the adapter or redesign the mix amp to work with current gen. It's partially Sony's fault for cheaping out and not adding an optical port on the PS5
Not everyone has a PS5, or they might have an optical out on their display. No point in charging more when some people might not need it

Astro needs to release an HDMI 2.1 mixamp so this whole device will be unnecessary.

the adapter is cable of only inferior signals compared to a PS5, HDMI 2.1 cables and most TVs.
Everything today can do 4K resolution at 120 frames per second, using HDMI 2.1. The adapter is 2.0 and can only do 4K at 60fps or 1080p at 120 FPS.
Unacceptable in my option. I paid a lot of money to maximize my video output only to have it ruined by this bottleneck. No thanks.
Exactly why not produce X amount of 2.1 adapters or go by preorders .. anything give effort. Paid too much to have this restriction
@@Zoze13 So I’m getting PS5 on Friday, and my monitor I have is a 120HZ 1080P monitor and I was excited to get 120 FPS with the ps5 and I’m confused and I’m thinking I’ll only get 60FPS because of this adapter, is that not the case. The only problem is with 4K
@@GrimReaper_3535 your monitor is 1080p? Then you absolutely get 120hz. Just make sure all your wires and inputs are HDMI 2.0. That’s two point zero, or higher.

This hdmi optical splitter is only hdmi 2.0b meaning you don’t get full 120hz at 4K such a let down here from Astro. Will be selling my a40’s & my a50’s to switch over to the steelseries pro wireless as they do not need optical input for independent adjustment of game/chat.

I’m using a benq gaming monitor that doesn’t have a optimal cord and whenever I try using the adapter and change the setting to voice chat only to headphones I can’t hear any game volume from my astros. Do I even need the adapter because it worked fine without it

I'm not a fan of this HDMI to optical adapter at all. It's only 4K 60 Hz, instead of 4K 120 Hz. If you have an optical audio output on your TV, use that for the Mixamp instead. It's more versatile as the sound from any input on the TV can get passed through to the Mixamp, and you still get 4K 120 Hz.
John Glasscock did a great job covering this exact topic th-cam.com/video/kVNSOR1HM90/w-d-xo.html. For one thing, there are more affordable adapters than the one made by Astro. More importantly though, any TV with optical audio output works great, and many 120 Hz native TVs will have that anyways due to being more on the high end(depending on the model you choose).

@@Patchowyes but to be honest it wouldn't be that much different if the adaptor would allow 1440p at 120 but for many monitors it doesn't. 90% of games will never hit actual 4K at 120. Any game that claims they do is Variable 4K which means if not much is going on the image stays 4K. All 4K 120 games are usually 1440p 120 when a lot is going on. The issue is the Astro adaptor only allows 1080p 120 on most monitors so you're still losing a lot of pixels.

Hey Astro. If you are reading this. I think you have a problem internal with your adapter.
Since may I used this adapter daily. Everything worked flawlessly. Pro tip. Turn off 3D audio for better overal sound. Because 2 engines in one makes the audio not legendary… because I know how legendary the sound of Astro is.
Anyways. We are now 18 july. Since 16 july I started to have problems with my adapter. Something In the booth up… because my mix amp gives direct power. My Ps5 is also on. But the screen is black.
Maybe it has to do something with Sony’s new performance update. But I rather think something is wrong with the power supply or recognize part to boot up.
Because if I detach the adapter and put my hdmi straight to Ps5. Everything works fine….
Day 2 same problem. I unplugged every cable put it back in as a fix. Once correctly booted I can go night and day without problem. But once I power off my ps5…. The adapter again won’t boot up properly. Took me more then 15 minutes to have a screen. The adapter is completely dead or over heated intern.
So now i am forced to play without my astro’s. Because without mix amp they sound silent and completely not good. But without adapter no mix amp optical port…. So, I play just without headset now.
So 3 possibilities:
Ps5 update from a week or 2 ago changed something that caused a bug?
Astro ps5 adapter can’t handle 48+ hours sessions? Yup, my ps5 is in the weekend very long on. I use it as a charger… or just go hardcore. Just like my sport life 🤦🏼♂️☯️.
Anyways possibility 3. Something internal is not right designed. Once booted up it works like a charm. The problem is… it doesn’t recognize the boot up.
Extra possibility is the loose cable design for usb power. But I think that is ok. Just a piste.
An easy fix is an updated Ps5 adapter with a led indicator build in. Then you know if the power is on or not.
Will buy a new one or replace with guarantee. But I have the feeling my new one will face to the same problem…

I have exactly the same problem as of today.
However, my mixamp works without the adapter. I only connected the adapter to the playstation via USB. I think there must have been an update and you just don't need the adapter anymore.
@@tranensacktv8924 no, you are right. Overlooked that one… but I play only with dolby else I just don’t use it. Still, it is surprising how good the a40’s are. It is a side solution.
Just switched to all audio instead of chat audio. Because there is only one hdmi. And setted it on linear pcm. And off course turned off 3D audio.
It is insane how good the Astro audio is on mix amp. I have like pro music headsets…. Their range are way higher. But are not ment for gaming. These a40’s on the other hand are just insanely good. With Dolby it’s legendary.

That's up to Sony because Xbox paid Dolby for their official device license to be able to use Dolby on any official device. That's why Xbox has the Dolby Access app and we don't. Sony wants people to use their new 3D audio which I will say is very good, but only in games specifically made to use it like exclusive PS titles like GOW and Spider-Man
1:26 You have to chose HDMI as Output device (thats where the extractor get dolby sound from), not the usb connected mixamp or you get stereo and this whole workout is pointless.

@@Ruhmove I cant relate to that myself, but some people prefer Stereo to Surround sound. Especially harcode Audiophiles kinda look down on Surround sound.
I'm no engineer or whatnot to get hired by Astro, just a guy who knows a little bit of that and this.
NOTE: If your PS5 is not detecting your MixAmp, try another USB cable. This was the solution for me.

@@Zoze13 Probably not, in fact there may be more by passing it through an additional adapter (though i'm hoping not). One thing that's annoying about passing it through the TV is that I have to change my TV output back and forth when not using the headset.

If anyone is having random video output drops since using this splitter here's a solution that worked for me
On your ps5, go to screen and video settings. On Video Output, select Video Transfer Rate and switch from automatic to -2.

If you are watching this, realize this adapter limits the framerate to 60 at 4K. It should be 120, so don't waste your time.

@@CrunchEnhancer The work around is to use an Optical output from the back of the TV to connect to the mixamp instead of relying on this adapter. Works great, but make sure your PS5 input and output audio is set to 'USB Headset'. If you choose HDMI out, the game and chat audio still comes in, but you can't use the fader on the mixamp correctly.
You can do 120 at 1080 p most people buying these are fps player ....who don't really care about 4k

When I check my Audio format (priority) setting I only got the options of Dolby Atmos & Dolby audio instead of bitstream Dolby, which one is the correct one to set out of the 2?

It’s not their fault. These were made when the playstations had optical ports. Sony is who you should be mad at for removing the port from new consoles.

You don't need the adepter on some brand new tvs i just use the dolby entrance on my tv my sound is just as good as on ps4 or with the adepter that i got years ago at its release... youjust need to set the main audio to go true the dolby
BUYER BEWARE - This Astro adapter runs inline from ps5 to source (TV or AVR)....so this will kill 4K120 HDMI 2.1 since the adapter is only rated at 4K60.

Okay it’s been a year and I now people are still buying this and all and if you have a problem with it not letting you change the AV amp don’t sweat it I got you first set headphones output to headphones to chat audio first then go back to AV AMP TURN IT ON THEN GO AND CHANGE IT TO 5.1ch or what ever you like…

You can use any usb power solution as the usb is only carrying power and not data.

Only problem is with the splitter the HDMI doesn't support 120hz past 1080p so if you play 1440p or 4k 120hz it is a no go. At least for me it was. Unfortunately had to pick up a new headset. But I loved my a40s

For sure a compremise, you give up most of the usb slots, you no longer get 4k 120Hz, the HDMI adapter gets superhot. This is suppose to be next gen ?
Why isn’t my mixamp showing up on input device? The only option I have is microphone on controller. Any ideas??
Where you able to solve this problem? I'm currently dealing with this situation. Even thought my mixamp is glowing white my ps5 isn't picking up the mixamp to change the setting from controller mic.

ANOTHER PSA FOR NEW PS5 OR ASTRO USERS - If you are looking for the correct Audio Format, select "Dolby Audio" not Dolby Atmos. Dolby Bitstream is now called Dolby Audio thanks to some geniuses at Sony.
NOW, if you are playing competitive shooters for example like me, you will want to experiment between Dolby Atmos and Dolby Audio in game to see which one you are going to get improved directional sound out of, but for the most part I am recommending the tried and true that has been great up to this point.
Question..... I just got a pair of A40tr with the mixamp and the astro HDMI to optical adapter. My question is, when updating my setting on the PS5 and selecting the audio output device, should I choose USB headset (Astro A40) or HDMI device (TV)?
Just released Gen 5 already that doesn't need adapters and that doesn't compromise 120hz with higher res.

Happy Thursday! My brand new Astro Mixamp Pro just arrvived, very excited but there appears to be something missing. In this video and the instruction manual there’s a second box to connect to that’s not included 😱 Is this needed and if so where can I purchase it please? 🙏 ✨ ✨ ✨
I wish there was a video for how to do this if we have an optical port on the TV already. I know that when I switch to Dolby sound there is a sharp static sound that happens which I don't know if that's normal.

@@joshuabaker9687 I've been using the optical port on my tv this whole time. I still have the adapter but never use it. I never did get a clear answer for how to set things up but my recommendation would be to look at the PS4 slim setup video as well, because that was before astro put out their own adapter.
I literally have the static as well!! But it comes & goes for a few seconds, it actually did it 6 times today

Would definitely be related to the optical output not being used in the pc

So, doing it the way you've shown, you lose 2 (out of 3) USB ports on the PS5 and you can no longer output HDMI 2.1 (4K 120Hz). More of a massive compromise, than a solution.
Ok then use another usb connected to power. Not that difficult. And the ps5 is currently not playing at 120HZ in true 4K only 1440P so that’s irrelevant.

I noticed and hooking it up to the PS5 everything that was shown in the video, everything works but you're capped at 60 hertz, and it's not as loud as it used to be when it was hooked up to the PS4

I’m upset, I’m getting screen dimming issues. Not sure if it’s from the connections, the console itself being defective, or perhaps my monitor? I do not have a 4K tv. Any suggestions or info would be nice thank you.
Does anyone else have a problem with it getting super hot? Is there a chance it can damage the cables or worse.
That's normal
It's normal for it to get warm. As long as it doesn't reach boiling temp it's fine. Your playstation gets hot too, there's just 2 inches of plastic that keep you from feeling how truly hot it is. As long as the inside doesn't reach boiling temp 100 C to where the motherboard would melt, it won't cause damage.
My a40sdidnt come with the little hdmi adapter?

Question: Is there no 7.1 surround option that uses the mixamp? Using optical only goes up to 5.1 and using USB makes the mixamp redundant. What am I missing here?
This was explained in the video, the usb signal is used for chat and the optical for game surround, there is no 7.1 support with these earphones or mixamp and as far as I know there is no mention of 7.1 by astro for any product they sell.

That's for xbox series on the ps4 you need the adapter because PlayStation didn't doesn't have a third party sound person Xbox uses Dolby Atmos to make up for the fact that the next Sam doesn't have the presets so all you have to do is update it and plug in USB

Edit: I think i figured it out. If you are using an adapter from amazon you probably have the ‘ARC’ setting switched on, switch it to ‘EXT’ instead. Not sure what these settings do, but switching between them solved my issue.

You don’t necessarily have to. The usb from the splitter is strictly for audio. So you can plug it into a socket or a usb outlet on your tv if your tv has one

I just got the headset and every time I use Bitstream Dolby it makes my monitor make noises.
Got the same issue, have you resolved it yet? I think that's why they said at 01:58 to turn the volume down but that's not a proper resolution though.
Have you managed to get it working properly? When I go to change the audio to my headset it won’t give me the option to change from the controllers mic to the mix amp

There's an easier way than using this adapter. th-cam.com/video/kVNSOR1HM90/w-d-xo.html. If you have a TV with optical audio output, I recommend using that for two reasons. First, it allows any source connected to the TV to output audio to the Mixamp. Second, you simply don't lose 120 Hz output because the PS5 is able to remain connected to the input which supports 120 Hz. I always used the optical audio output on the TV because it made the Mixamp and even A50 Base Station far more versatile. Anything that was connected to my TV could output to Mixamp.

The 3D audio doesn’t work so do what I done sell you A40’s and buy steelseries arctis 7p oh plus using this adapter you can’t play 120 fps it’s limited to 60

You don't need the hdmi adapter if your TV has an optical port. Just plug a optical cord into your TV and plug it into the Amp 😉👌. Enough likes and I'll make a vid of my setup.

Can anyone help with this problem? I set the headset up just as he does in this video, but there’s constant buzzing in the headset at all times, and when I talk in voice chat everyone can hear it too. I’ve tried resetting everything including the ps5, yet the problem persists. It’s a brand new headset and adapter so I really don’t know what it could be

ok every time i click on dolby (bitstream) it only says dolby but i click on it and it doesn’t play any sound and makes a loud scratchy screech noise when my speakers are on on my monitor. any thing wrong w linear pcm??

I think its bacause the splitter only supports hdmi 2.0. And we need 2.1 or 2.2 . But no one makes a splitter like that.
