I have been stung so many times. Not by box jellyfish but others. Once we started our vacation right when the jellyfish had laid there eggs I kept seeing these eggs in a string and wondered what they were a few days later I found out the hard way. As soon as they hatch they can sting. While a few stings were not that bad but I had swam Up to a jetty to look at the fish there I ended up getting into a soup of tiny jellyfish that stung me all over. I got away from them but they were still so many all over me. I was pulling off my bathing suit in the water to try and get them off of it and me. I didn’t care who saw me. I did have my back to the beach but really I was in so much pain it just didn’t mater. My boyfriend wasn’t too happy with me doing so but I just wanted them gone. I got most off me but we had to take a boat back to the mainland where we were staying. It took 3 hours before we got back to our room and I could wash off. I tried put vinegar in them but at that point I think it maybe was just to late to help.

That had to be an awful experience!! When my young daughter was with my ex and his new family, they went to a nearby isle and a tropical storm had hit that area- just a couple of days ago. That storm resulted in Portuguese Man’O Wars (colorful and huge jellyfish) being pushed closer to shore. The lifeguard came running when he heard her screams and pulled the tentacles off (he had gloves on) using a vinegar solution. Then he treated the sting areas with gauze pads, that were soaked in Aldoph’s Meat Tenderizer (at the hospital where she was taken, they continued to treat the stings the same way for two days).

The active ingredient that kills box jellyfish stings is acetic acid. Vinegar contains a 4% solution of acetic acid, though most fermenting fruit solution (wine or spirits) can also contain a lesser solution. Only a 2% solution is required to deactivate the nematocysts (tiny stinging harpoons on the jellyfish's tentacles.) Vinegar happens to be the most widely used and available.

I am toying with the idea
    that
    irukandgai jellyfish
can continually sting over many hours to many days and that they can use the sun to navigate
that they mate with something much larger or smaller. like the red back spider
and that the face and brain is particularly reactive to irukandgai venom.
    face can blush
the same cells that produce red when blushing are the exact same cells
that are effected by irukandgai jellyfish sting.
    skin deep sensory network
    of some type
I believe once stung by irukandgai
%100 of cases should shower straight away
in a bucket of vinegar and hot soapy water.
an antibiotic that targets skin be used immediately
irrespective of lack of evidence of infection or fever.
    to the irukandgai jellyfish.
we could also use flashes of light to persuade irukandgai to swim somewhere else.
i do think that irukandgai tentacles are sticky and the pain stops when all the stingers die off.

I just got triggered! Back in the 70s when I was a bikini babe ny family and I went to Bora Bora. We were on a snorkeling trip by boat. The instructor was this tall muscular brown mustache hunk. Auntie was swooning. We were on the edge of a rocky coral and he suddenly had this dead look on his face and said. “Don’t panic but their is a swarm of jellyfish (box I believe) and it’s floating to our direction we have 5 minutes to swim to the boat or we will for sure die painfully!” Suddenly a bunch of fish start facing passing us, some pumping into our torso, I swear I even saw a big sea turtle and dolphin racing in a panic, I look down and it’s like a beautiful crimson blanket. We all swam as fast as Micheal Phelps . They were inches away from our toes it was terrifying. I am so glad we didn’t have grandma or any of the kids with us then. When we got to our boat the whole surface was covered in these beautiful but deadly animals. This planet and life are sure worth saving and living.🌎🌍🌏

Pee on it. For real I got hit by one in new Smyrna Beach and that’s what the lifeguards told me to do and it was very painful but definitely didn’t last three days and I had the same Rope looking marks from the tentacles wrap it around my arms

You were in the right place at the right time Doctor - because you would not be telling us all about how best to treat these jellyfish stings otherwise

To the doctor at 1.08 in the video, not true. You've never heard of Dr Jaime Seymour? He's dedicated most of his life studying these animals.

Oh my gosh, I grew up getting bit by jellyfish lol. I fell onto a bed of them once and had sun poisoning too. I remember hallucinating from the fever but was never taken for medical help. Use ammonia as soon as you get stung, apple cider vinegar or pee. Lol, yep… urine will neutralize the venom/poison.

The medical advice is to not urinate on the sting area nor rub sand nor salt water.

I have recently turned on notifications for this channel and like every other video shows "this uploader has not made this video available in your country". What's up with this attitude National Geographic? Censorship on knowledge based on location? Really? I find this very upsetting. I suppose it's called national not international geographic for a reason :/
