    In regard to the chemical spill and resulting fish kill ~ the unincorporated community of Puttstown is located in Hopewell Township, Huntingdon County ~ at least sixteen miles east of Roaring Spring ~ NOT five miles downstream. It is very doubtful that the single chemical spill would have contributed substantially to the shut down of the mill. There had been a couple similar spills in past decades, and the mill never shut down because of any of them. The fines were paid and life went on. Perhaps more importantly to the shut down of the mill was the decline in the market for coated papers. Also, this video mixes certain views of the mills in Wisconsin with the Spring Mill. It is misleading to do that. Was the creepy music background really necessary? And one additional note ~ At the point 12:33 the camera pans left to right and the brick building that can be seen 'behind' the greenish-grey metal dumpster is one of two of the oldest structures that date to circa 1886 when the original wooden buildings were replaced by brick structures. A second, brief view of the building appears at 12:54. The building's facade is additionally seen at 13:05 and 13:16 to 13:32. In the late 1990's the brick building was renovated inside and out, and few people who even worked there knew that the building was historic for the plant. The other building dating at least as old was called the "Clay Building". It was my privilege to work as the Stores Supervisor for eighteen years and as such I came in contact with nearly all the employees at one time or another. I can say that everyone with whom I came in contact at the Spring Mill were diligent and conscientious workers who were proud to work at the company that people from the region claimed would never shut down. For the last four years of my employment, I designed watermarks for the company. I lost my job through downsizing in January 2006 and this video brings back fond memories.

      Thank you for taking the time to address these things. I do my best with these videos with the limited amount of information I can dig up on the internet. My main objective it to showcase the location in its current state before its gone forever. Thank you for watching and sharing.

    Chem spill had nothing to do with the shutdown and liss of jobs, however im glad i got to see the mill in which i worked one last time.

      @JOEYUNDERGROUND  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I know the spill isn't what closed the mill but I just wanted to go into the spill due to never hearing about it myself. I know the documentary part was a little confusing but my main purpose was to get footage of the mill before it was torn down. Thank you for checking it out.

    Cool video. Place was around for around 160 years. Sad loss to the community i really hope they leave a historical site there to remember this industry and the men and women that worked there.

    "They say it was competition but while I was doing my research I stumbles upon a disturbing story which was also a kind of cover up"
    Yes you did

    • @JOEYUNDERGROUND
      @JOEYUNDERGROUND  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, they said it was competition that shut down the mill and while researching it I found out the spill. That doesn't mean the spill shut it down it just means while researching the reason I found out about the spill. Sorry my TH-cam video upset you. I'm literally just presenting fact and history on the mill. Idk why this is so bothersome. I didn't run the place or have any involvement with its closure. I simply made a video about the history of the Appvion Paper Mill and its current state. My deepest apologies if you are not satisfied with it.

    Sad to see it go. I am from that area originally and I still to this day try to buy Roaring Spring notebooks.

      We didn't make notebooks at this mill you are thinking of Roaring Spring Blank Book Co.

    We had a few people that lost their jobs from the paper mill come to my company for work. I remember it being big news since, like you said, the stinky paper mill was a staple to the Roaring Spring area.

      Yeah man, it's crazy to see it almost gone. I knew a lot of people that worked there and had to scramble to find a place to work. Definitely a rough situation.

    Interestingly they said competition was the reason for shutdown. But in reality they sold our products and customers to another mill in PA

    That mill has been polluting that area for decades. As for that spill into the river that is just one of MANY that has happened. Yeah 300 jobs were lost and that is a bummer but reality is that mill was primarily a good old boys club with there hiring practices since the beginning of time. So certain families and social circles made out like bandits generationally. While the only thing that the vast majority people in that area got from that plant was the whole entire town smelling like rotten eggs 24/7/365. The inside of their cars smelled like it. The inside of people's houses smelled like it. Their clothes smelled like it. You couldn't escape it. So bummer for the loss of those jobs. But cheers to Roaring Spring for not being a toxic waste dump anymore and actually being a enjoyable town to visit and not have to breath in that sulfur smell anymore.

      Thank you for giving me an honest perspective. I got a lot of hate for making this documentary and discussing the chemical spill. People really took it personally and were mad at me for reporting public knowledge. You're the first to give an opposing opinion on it. Thank you for your honesty and for checking it out.

      @@JOEYUNDERGROUND I grew up in that area. Still have friends and family in that area. All I said was the absolute truth. It saddens me to see the other comments that were obviously biased by the small group who benefited from that toxic dump. Shame on them and quite frankly I want to welcome them all down off of their economic thrones and down to the level the vast majority live at in the geographic area. Their generational economic domination and better then everyone else attitude is over and I am happy for that quite frankly. Their comments really show how little they do truly care about Roaring Spring. They are bashing you because they wanted to continue lining their pockets and polluting the whole ecosystem of that beautiful area. If they truly cared even a little bit they would be happy knowing Roaring Spring now has an opportunity after decades of pollution to recover and be a healthy happy environment for its population.

    So you're implying the spill is what caused the shutdown? I think it was more piss poor management. You also failed to mention the millions of dollars the employees lost from the stock. Weird video

    • @JOEYUNDERGROUND
      @JOEYUNDERGROUND  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not implying that at all. Just repeating public knowledge and history of the place. I only mention the spill because many people have no knowledge of it and it's a very important issue. The video clearly discusses the dates of the spill compared to the shutdown. This video isn't meant to deceive anyone and my heart goes out to everyone who got screwed in this situation.
