That poor kid was nearly decapitated, they cut so deep. (I read the book that was written about this, it had everything from the trial, all the evidence etc.) I remember the day this happened...ugh. So scary, so terrible.
Thankfully my 10-year-old is cool with me and her dad going through her phone. We've talked to her about how people can pretend to be who they aren't and try to trick kids. She's very aware and on the lookout for creeps, and before she starts talking with anyone, she has us check to make sure they are who they say they are (i.e. that they're really one of her friends that we know), and she knows that even adults can be fooled sometimes, but that we're less likely to be. On the rare occasion that she talks with someone she doesn't know in person, she lets us know where and to whom, and has it in her own profiles that she's 10 and her parents keep an eye on her account and will call the police if anyone says anything inappropriate. I think that, if parents talk to their kids and don't act like only kids can be fooled, then it's amazing how open kids will be back. She's got friends more secretive with their parents because their parents don't talk so openly with them and who act like only kids make mistakes in judgement.

Ten years was not enough, I support rehabilitation but not in her case. I see people saying she was also a victim bc of Jeremy but the level of cruelty she displayed with her brother & the general lack of remorse tells me she deserved to serve more time. We have the YCJA here, she was rehabilitated and changed her name after. A newspaper article a few years ago came out saying that she felt remorse and how she's now a successful, functioning member of society.
That record needs to follow her everywhere she goes. It's a big enough gift to give her rehabilitation and freedom, but erase it? No way. That sends the wrong message to all the other 12 year olds. It's great they took care of her, but she needs to be made an example of what your life will look like if you do something so horrific. She killed her little brother, and that brings her crime to a whole new level, imo.

I like the idea of rehabilitation vs punishment, especially for child criminals. However, she definitely should have received more time, and should not be allowed to have her crimes erased from record.
She actually went to my university, and another university in my city under an unknown identity. I also heard that profs were speaking about this incident while she was in the classroom and they didn’t know it was her.
As someone with two younger brothers, this one really was tough to listen to. I usually have no issues, but I just can't imagine what that little boy went through before he was killed.

My parents accepted my goth phase. My mom would help me shop for clothes and let me dye my hair dark (I was a redhead). I think it really helped me not go off into the bad side of the goth scene (there is a bad side to every scene). It allowed me to express myself without being judged by my family. Parents, accept your kids and their phases. Teach them right from wrong, but let them express themselves in a safe environment.
She was not just 'goth', they drew the line when she dated a 23 year old when she just started her teen years, probably not even having her first period. For a catholic girl she was very accepted for her behaviour until she started being weird about blood, satanism, etc. I agree though that punishment can lead to the bad side of something, but not in her case.
Yes! My high school looks were filled with ripped tights, band tshirts, black chipped nails, doc martens and bright red dyed hair (we obviously didn't have a dress code in my school 😂). And my parents never tried to influence me in what I should wear, what should I listen and how I should look, and I think it's one of the best thing you can do for your kid, let it express himself in it's own way. It's probably gonna pass anyway, and if not, you have a healthy, happy grown up being comfortable in who he is! 😊

When I was 16 I was on a cruise and a 20 year old was interested in me and at that time I didn't think anything of it because I thought it was just a four year difference but then I told one of the cruise employees that a 20 year old was interested in me and they told me that's not normal and if anything happens to tell her and now that I'm 22 and looking back on it, I realize how weird that whole dynamic was and honestly that cruise employee was the real mvp for being the one to tell me that it wasn't normal and looking out for me.

I thought we were soft on crime in Australia but Canada takes the cake. Here she probably would've had to go to a juvenile correctional facility until she was 18 and been reviewed at the end of that. Then possibly off to adult prison for 10-25 years. The crime was particularity horrific and cruel and the public would've cried out for justice.
Debra (the mother) was my moms bestfriend, they grew up together in Ontario and my mom was there visiting just 3 months before this tragedy. The fact that Jasmine is out now disgusts our whole family and country...

My husband grew up in Medicine Hat and I was born there. That crime is incredibly notorious within Alberta and most people I know are not impressed with how lax Jasmine's sentence was.
Ten years was not enough, I support rehabilitation but not in her case. I see people saying she was also a victim bc of Jeremy but the level of cruelty she displayed with her brother & the general lack of remorse tells me she deserved to serve more time. RIP Richardson family but especially the little brother.

We have the YCJA here, she was rehabilitated and changed her name after. A newspaper article a few years ago came out saying that she felt remorse and how she's now a successful, functioning member of society.

I like the idea of rehabilitation vs punishment, especially for child criminals.
However, she definitely should have received more time, and should not be allowed to have her crimes erased from record.
She actually went to my university, and another university in my city under an unknown identity. I also heard that profs were speaking about this incident while she was in the classroom and they didn’t know it was her.
As someone with two younger brothers, this one really was tough to listen to. I usually have no issues, but I just can't imagine what that little boy went through before he was killed.

My parents accepted my goth phase. My mom would help me shop for clothes and let me dye my hair dark (I was a redhead). I think it really helped me not go off into the bad side of the goth scene (there is a bad side to every scene). It allowed me to express myself without being judged by my family. Parents, accept your kids and their phases. Teach them right from wrong, but let them express themselves in a safe environment.
She was not just 'goth', they drew the line when she dated a 23 year old when she just started her teen years, probably not even having her first period. For a catholic girl she was very accepted for her behaviour until she started being weird about blood, satanism, etc. I agree though that punishment can lead to the bad side of something, but not in her case.

Yes! My high school looks were filled with ripped tights, band tshirts, black chipped nails, doc martens and bright red dyed hair (we obviously didn't have a dress code in my school 😂). And my parents never tried to influence me in what I should wear, what should I listen and how I should look, and I think it's one of the best thing you can do for your kid, let it express himself in it's own way. It's probably gonna pass anyway, and if not, you have a healthy, happy grown up being comfortable in who he is! 😊

When I was 16 I was on a cruise and a 20 year old was interested in me and at that time I didn't think anything of it because I thought it was just a four year difference but then I told one of the cruise employees that a 20 year old was interested in me and they told me that's not normal and if anything happens to tell her and now that I'm 22 and looking back on it, I realize how weird that whole dynamic was and honestly that cruise employee was the real mvp for being the one to tell me that it wasn't normal and looking out for me.

When I was 14, i had a guy interested in me that I thought was 18... turned out he lied to me and was actually 21. My cousins boyfriend, at that time, threatened him and i never heard from him again.. thankful that he stepped in when he seen that something was wrong..

I thought I commented on this but maybe not! This is my city. The Richardson’s lived across the back alley from my in-laws. I went to school with him and ick. There was something wrong with him for years before this. It was a matter of time situation. I hadn’t seen him for about 5 years before. The girl who took them to Leader Sask (next province over) also went to high school with us. It’s such a bizarre feeling knowing she’s out and living a new life now and I went to school with that psychopath. Oh and the Catholic schools here are just like public schools, not all girls or anything. Normal schools. Jasmine is a teacher now apparently. She lives in Edmonton, Ab. That’s about 6 hours North from our city.
