FIRE WAS FOUGHT BY THE MAPLEWOOD FIRE DEPARTMENT ALONG WITH MANY OTHER NEIGHBORING FIRE DEPARTMENT'S FROM THAT ENTIRE IMMEDIATE AREA. I USED 2 SEPARATE IPHONES SIMULTANEOUSLY TO RECORD THIS EVENT AND THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY THERE ARE 2 DIFFERENT VIDEOS OF THE FIRE. GOD BLESS ALL OF THE FIREFIGHTERS ALWAYS FOR EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO FOR ALL OF US ALL YEAR ROUND. HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE 2ND VIDEO: • (READ DESCRIPTION) - ...

Okay I stand corrected on any previous comments about this being an accident. This fire was directly due to negligence on the parent company's side Avalon Communities LLC. Whilst it may have been legal by State Building Code Avalon used substandard materials in the construction of this complex. Despite knowing the inherent rangers of using lightweight wood they choose to do so anyways. Lightweight would has a much lower ignition point than standard dense and hardwoods (think basically compressed sawdust) making it not only extremely flammable, but also this allows any fire that does start to spread extremely rapidly faster than any fire department can get control of, and this type of wood releases way more embers than other woods due to how fast and violently it burns. This material was directly responsible for both of the other Avalon Communities apartment fires in New Jersey that destroyed both of those complexes. This even prompted the state to consider changing building material codes in 2014. Nothing changed and Avalon is still using this substandard material in their buildings. Basically where it isn't explicitly banned these Avalon apartments are just tinder boxes waiting to ignite. Shame on Avalon Communities LLC for continuing to use this dangerous material just because they can.

"Oh my God in Heaven..." The tone of your voice... In all your videos I've watched so far, I have never heard you react like this (and I agree). Even in the big ones, like the grocery store that was set ablaze by the lithium-ion e-bike battery. Goes to show just how bad this one was. And somehow made the video even more real, and more scary. A miracle everyone was okay, and I'm so thankful for that, and for the first responders. My prayers to all involved, first responder and civilian alike. Stellar job, as always.

Another brilliant piece of coverage John. Building of this type would never be allowed in UK. Bricks, mortar, concrete & steel are main structures. Wooden roofs and internal walls only. We don't even get it right after that dreadful multi storey tower block in London recently where many lives were lost due to the type of cladding on the exterior walls being a fire hazard!! We didn't even have a ladder high enough to get to the higher flats it was so tall.

      Murray Hall
On reflection, although the LFB did the best job they could, especially the crews that were sent in, the whole thing was a mess; the lost of containment was so rapid, that they found themselves 'outgunned' by the tragic inferno ...
Until the Inquiry publishes its findings, it is to soon to say what more could have been done. Personally, though, the massive cuts, to the FRS throughout the UK, thanks to HM Treasury, meant not enough of the right equipment was on hand, and not enough warm bodies. Personally (and no offense to the LFB ...), I am jelious of the range of equipment that the FDNY as at hand. Perhaps if they had 4, 200ft Tiller Ladders (one per 'quarter' of Greater London; two modern versions of Mack 'Super Pumpers' ( which, ironically, where each powered with a Napier 'Deltic' engine ... yup /that/ Deltic ...), with two 'Super Tenders' each (for each 'half' ), then two 'Major Incident Command Units' (instead of having mutiple Command Units ordered on ...), stationed at Lambeth, perhaps maybe they could have had a better chance ...
What scares me about Inner London is that it is scattered with tower blocks, and large, labyrinthine, estates. Granted, after WWII, with so much housing stock gone, building enough homes, to replace that stock gone, was a priority: so the idea was to build up, leading to mutilple tower block estates ...
In terms of internal structure, most have nothing much wrong with them ... allegedly. But now so many are managed by Housing Associations, which are either good, bad, or indifferent, who the hell knows just how many remain 'fit for purpose' ...
About a dozen years, or so, ago, I nearly got flooded out, all because of fautly drainage in the bedsit above me. I live on the 3rd floor of a five floor block (well, six, since the place is 'capped' with masonettes ...); what suprised me was the sheer volume of water that poured through my bathroom ceiling. It actually was enough to go through my floor, and in to the bedsit below. Had the LFB not effected an entry with their universal key (aka a 45lb sledgehammer ...), more than likely it would have made its way to the ground floor ... I had long suspected that my bathroom ceiling was a 'false' one, which turned out to be true ...
In addition, in the corner of the bathroon is a large trunk that serves for the sewage lines. Fair enough. But having had to take the 16"x16" plywood inspection hatch off, it isn't capped below, nor above. In short, there is a chimney in my bathroom ... which I am not sure how it's ventilated ...
Now, I am not worried too much; but given this thing is directly behind my shower, and the plywood hatch underneath it is showing signs of shrinkage/warpage, with a increasing gap all the way around, I am really tempted to replacing it with a metal one, with at least two 'o' rings for a tighter fit, since my landlord isn't gonna do anything about it. I doubt it will go up in flames any time soon, but anything could happen; after all, fire + methane = a rather large bang ...

It kind of makes you wonder who exactly did what or wasn't paying attention in the initial fire phase to allow it to grow this enormous. Honestly you would think that with early detection (people paying attention) that no fire by normal means (without some sort of accelerant) would ever get this big. So that begs the questions. A how did this fire start and was it deliberate? Because it sure looks like accelerant was used. B how did no one see the telltale signs of a fire before this reached flashover point (spontaneous ignition)? I love it. JJ walks into the parking structure "I think I may have found an angle here" large chunk of building material crashes into the parking structure "I think I'm going to go around to the other side". Yeah JJ I think that was a good idea that parking structure may have provided a good angle, but was waaaaaay too close to be any semblance of safe.

Great job. Love how you survey the whole scene. I just ask that you be careful and be aware of your surroundings. Please don't try to get to close. Be aware of collapse zones and over head wires and other dangers like propane tanks and such. I don't know if you know the progression of fire but it goes like this. Red flames are the coolest and easiest to put out. Then going up the scale is orange, yellow, and the hottest white. This way you can tell easier how well they are doing to get it out. Thank you for all these videos. I am enjoying each of them. Be careful and keep up the good work.

There are three or four other fire videos on TH-cam of similar wood-frame apartment structures burning with equal ferocity. As I remember, most or all of them were also under construction. I hope this means that when completed, they'd have fire sprinklers which would insure that a fire like this could not happen when the building was occupied by residents. On the other hand - why is it legal to build wooden structures this big in the first place? Wood burns!

    • @THEMAJESTIRIUM1

    • @Nash1a
      @Nash1a 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Ive been saying the same thing. One the one hand, until all the sheet rock is in place, the whole structure is more vulnerable than what is safe. So "under construction" means bon fire. BUT on the other hand, building 3 and 4 story wood structures is OBVIOUSLY a bad idea since a fire in one causes so much radiant energy it can easily ignite other buildings (even complete ones) not connected to the original. This is why whole complexes are going up. Because 3 or more stories are just too tall for wood structures unless you want to leave MUCH MORE space in between them, and who wants to do that? I doubt it will take legislation though. The insurance underwriters will stop this in its tracks by refusing to insure the construction.

Put a line at that what already burned and gone, to help knock down heat. But put more work to contain and stop the spread. Think they could figure that out! Know people going to say they are doing all they can ETC. And easy to arm chair a fire working! But it is to Obvious.

I don't think there was good use of that deck gun at all. It could have taken the intensity of that corner and to the left because it certainly wasn't reaching the building it was attempting to hit. When cooling those propane tanks you should do 5 seconds on the tanks and 10 seconds on the heat source unless you can not penetrate the heat source which is rarely the case. Why you wouldn't extinguish a power pole for 5 seconds so it doesn't become a hazard i'll never understand.

Fires no matter how horrible they are to see, can be beautiful to. That being said, my heart just sank when I saw this fire and seen how far it had gotten. But then you turned around to get another shot and I saw the tree and the pole that had been or was still on fire, It was stunning the way the wind was blowing it. I need a screenshot of that. Great job as usual. You do a fantastic job even if your fingers are freezing or you are inhaling smoke.

those are 65lb propane tanks and I counted 10 of them, even with the biggest propane heater, one of those tanks would run the heater the hole night, a 20lb tank runs my RV heater for 2 days. if it was a propane heater that caused this, there would be a explosion, but those type of heats has a shut off if there was a problem, my furnace if it has a problem, the fuse would trip it and it would shut down. That is why I can't believe it was a heater, too many safety systems are there and the building went up way too fast.

I just thought about the same thing happened with a Avalon company complex in edgewater, n.j. back in January of 2015. That was caused by a contractor trying to fix a pipe under a sink.but anyway this complex being of the same overall problem of trying to get condo developers to put these things into areas of blue collar and other hard working people, who have been living here for years. This particular area is heavily populated by commercial property. I think that New Jersey transit is not too far away from this address on boydon Avenue in maplewood. Who needs a million dollar condo to be in this area. I don't know what banks up front the developers so called gold coast properties. May they should consider building these buildings in California or Florida. Just venting my opinions. Great job on this thing stay safe and happy new year to you

My viewing of this video being six years after the fire, Google Maps shows that the project was finished, but of course the framing of the apartments is not visible. I assume it was rebuilt using the same materials as originally. It's a big complex.

As a firefighter in the FDNY that is at least a 5 alarm fire we would need a lot of hands for this. Obviously this is an exterior only fire. We would use multiple tower lines at least 3. My question is how bad is their fire department you got there before anyone else. And this fire as been burning for at least 1 hour. The fact that building is fully involved . Makes me believe this was an arson for sure, multiple areas were started at the same time ( fire starters)

Elizabeth Cherry hi,in California we have to install full fire sprinkler systems in all new structures, commercial or residential.ant these systems have paid off several times even in my small community. I live in the Sierra Nevada foothills,we are very wildland fire prone, and sprinklered structures have with stood direct onslaught attacks. That said the past couple of years we've seen entire towns disttroyed in wildland fires.

Hi, did many of the nearby home catch on fire. With all them embers you would think some of them might of. Wood frame construction is no good as far as I am concerned. On my old dept it would be a surround and drown. It is like drawing a line. Leave what is to far gone and try to save the rest. Protect the exposures. 3 things a fire dept has as main jobs. Life safety, incident stabilization and property conservation. in that order. Excellent video!!! Keep it coming.
