    "For God's sake Boris, you were the one that mattered most". The mutual respect that developed between Boris and Legaslov makes for such a powerful scene here.

    The scene between Boris and Legaslov was so moving. They first met as almost enemies, but in the end where filled with only mutual respect, admiration, and friendship. Ned Stark said "you find your true friends on the battle field", but now I think we can also say "whilst staring into an open nuclear reactor".

      Indeed, Vichnaya Pamyat = Eternal Memory
      In the Roman Catholic Faith there is a prayer for the deceased that begins, "Eternal rest grant unto them O Lord"; in the Eastern Orthodox Catholic Faith (which is practiced by a majority of those in the former Soviet States) there is a similar phrase said for the deceased, "Vichnaya Pamyat", Eternal Memory. In fact, the music playing over the end credits is the Orthodox Chant of Vichnaya Pamyat from the end of the Funeral Liturgy, courtesy of the Homin Lviv Municipal Choir.

    Vichnaya Pamyat (Memory Eternal) is a chant used at the end of an Eastern Orthodox funeral or memorial service.
    The chanting of "Memory eternal" is introduced by a deacon, as follows:
    Deacon: In a blessed falling asleep, grant, O Lord, eternal rest unto Thy departed servant (Name) and make his/her memory to be eternal!
    Choir: Memory eternal! Memory eternal! Memory eternal!
    It concludes with the line "with the saints, grant her/him rest o Christ, memory eternal!"

    “That’s how an RBMK reactor core explodes; lies”

    After watching this reaction I just noticed something. They said the flaw was 1st discovered in 1975, but Boris said reactor 4 (the one that exploded) 1st went online in 1983. I guess that means, They kept building that design after they found out.

      @blakewilliams5627 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Bill Dean I get not telling anybody about the flaw, but you would think they would stop building reactors of that specific model, & design a new one. They said in the show that there were 17 of that model operating at that time, so I wonder how many reactors did they build between 1975(discovery of the flaw)-1986(Chernobyl).

    • @tchoupitoulos

      @@blakewilliams5627 When I say not telling anybody about the flaw, that includes the people whose job it is to make the building decisions.
      AS for numbers, it's hard to discern from this which reactors had their designs corrected, as there were a number of redesigns whose details it doesn't go into. But here is some raw data on the reactor build and operation timeline: www.world-nuclear.org/information-library/nuclear-fuel-cycle/nuclear-power-reactors/appendices/rbmk-reactors.aspx

    And that right there tells you what you need to know about both Soviet and present day Russian accountability.

    13:47 Dyatlov doesn't fix the problem himself because he wasn't trained as an operator. Despite all of his arrogance he couldn't actually operate the machine, only Akimov, Toptunov (and the other assembled workers in the room) could.

    • @dwnkaomwn3953
      @dwnkaomwn3953 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Then why the fuck was that man in charge of a nuclear power plant if he didn't have the necessary skills to run it?

    • @Misslt27
      @Misslt27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @DWN KAOMWN
      I know it sounds ridiculous but it was actually very typical nuclear power plant bureaucracy!
      Dyatlov’s job was Deputy Chief Engineer, a managerial position, whereas Akimov and Toptunov et al. were reactor engineers, their job literally was to operate the reactor. This isn’t to say that Dyatlov was stupid or didn’t know how the reactor worked, in fact when he had taken the job at Chernobyl he immersed himself to the point of obsession reading everything he could get his hands on about RBMK reactors. He knew the reactors at Chernobyl intimately because he made a point of routinely inspecting every last inch of them. At Chernobyl, though he was considered domineering and hard to work with, he was actually highly respected for his knowledge on RBMKs. What Dyatlov didn’t know about RBMKs wasn’t worth writing about (obviously this would turn out to be very wrong. CATASTROPHICALLY WRONG.) He just couldn’t operate them in the sense of pushing the buttons, moving the rods in and out, because that wasn’t the job he was trained to do.
      I feel like his expertise also explains his stubbornness; nothing he had read said that RBMKs could explode, therefore in Dyatlov’s mind, they couldn’t explode. Also, his previous job was with the military, installing reactors on nuclear submarines (he also survived a nuclear accident then too!). And what do you do in the military? You do as you’re told, you trust the orders that have been given to you. I’m not claiming to be an expert on Dyatlov’s psychology but I do believe these two factors can reasonably account for his stubbornness and nigh on unshakeable belief.
      Also, interesting fact about Viktor Bryukhanov, the plant manager: he was a very talented engineer who made his name working at coal powered electricity plants. The Party picked him up and sent him to rural Ukraine charged with the task of building the nuclear power plant which would become known as Chernobyl. He was literally responsible for planning and building a nuclear power plant AND the city of Pripyat from the ground up. All at the age of 35. Remember the bunker scene in episode one? When the old Party chief asks the assembled men if they know the real name of the power plant? Remember who answers? Viktor Bryukhanov. Of course he knows its real name! HE BUILT IT!

      Leigh-Ann Turnbull wtf dude. Dyatlov was an engineer

    • @tchoupitoulos
      @tchoupitoulos 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@dwnkaomwn3953 Because he's management now. His job is to know and run his staff, it's their job to run the plant. No one can keep up with the constant change of cutting edge technology forever while taking on greater organizational responsibilities. This is a very common circumstance in technology-based orgs.
      The young better understand things that change, like the evolving tech. Older people better understand the things that don't change, like human and organizational behavior.

    • @Misslt27
      @Misslt27 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @lilmoni I guess my original comment is somewhat confusing, but as I later explain (and as Bill Dean succinctly puts) Dyatlov's job at Chernobyl was MANAGERIAL. Yes, he was a trained engineer, but that is a very broad field. Just because you're trained to work on nuclear submarines, doesn't mean you're trained to operate an RBMK reactor. He seemingly did his best to educate himself for the job by reading a lot of literature on RBMKs, but the fact remains he wasn't specifically *trained* to operate them.
      I've edited my original comment to specify more clearly that he wasn't trained as an operator.
