On the string through basses you can also use medium scale strings generally. Great job here, very accurate info. Many items discussed that most reviewers ignore.
Nice video! I bought the TMB30 on a whim and it is a deal for sure. I did a little work on mine. The only essential thing was a string change (stock strings were atrocious), but I also polished the frets, rolled the edges of the fingerboard, cleaned up some tiny rough patches on the neck, and tinkered with the action. Now it plays just about as well as any bass I have, including one that is currently about 10X the price new. Even the pick ups are decent, especially the P. Honestly, it has me thinking about going all in on short scale basses and selling off the 34"s.
Hey, I've been looking for answers, but what oil do you use for the jatouba fingerboard on tmb30. I use it myself. It's awesome.
@@ariffazuki7296 I just used Formbys lemon oil, which I've been using on guitars for decades. I apply it maybe once a year or so. You don't need much, but it really varies depending on the guitar. I just applied it to an Ibanez Mikro that I bought used, and it was dry the fret board had taken on a whitish color. It really sucked it up. But normally you would just put on a light coat, and wipe it off after a few minutes, and then buff it a little with a clean towell to get a nice shine.
Can you recommend me some good strings for the TMB30, I am a newbie and want a better sound on the bass. Thank you!
@@kumo9102 This is a big personal preference thing, but to get started you could try some GHS pressure wounds or Ernie Ball strings. The are high quality for a good price.
I bought a Sterling Stingray SS-4 and I absolutely Love-it. The sound and playability (neck, frets, pickup) exceeded my expectations. Sounds Amazing with my Fender Rumble 100 amp. Nice job with this information. Enjoyed your presentation. oNe LovE from NYC
Thank you for a great comparison video. I ordered the TMB30 yesterday from Sweetwater. Same color as yours. I'm not a bass player, so I just wanted something very reasonably priced to get acclimated on. I've played Fender Telecasters all of my playing years, and for me, there is no finer guitar for different music genres. My opinion of course. I have watched many reviews on TH-cam regarding the TMB30, and I'm convinced it would suite my needs, especially being a short scale which makes for an easier transition for a guitar player like myself. My only concern is fit and finish. I am a stickler for that. I saw some photos of the TMB30 that showed slight paint bleeding from the black painted top of the headstock to the back maple portion. I know it's a less expensive bass, so I can't expect perfection. Did you notice any finish abnormalities on yours, and in particular, paint bleeding at the headstock? A trick i use to fit even the huge bass string into a small hole is to tie a smaller string and cut the longer heavy string past the nut. Wrap the newly looped small string and looped big one together then wrap thread and white glue around the tied looped joint Its easy compared to peeling off the big strings outer wiindings to reduce diameter and make it fit the tuning machine.

Great comparison. I have the Fender Mustang Player and the Ibanez TMB30. The Fender is a great bass that is solid, very well built and excellent pickups. I got the special edition butterscotch color that Sweetwater did a while back. Very nice bass overall. The Ibanez was 1/3 the price. While the fit and finish on the Ibanez is not quite up to the Fender, but it actually plays a little better. The Ibanez has a little less thud that most short scales have and I am impressed with it. I also like the chunky neck on the Ibanez as well. The Ibanez was $179 pre-covid and was a steel at that price.
I tried the Musicman short at the local Guitar Center. The first one tried sounded strange on the E string. I tried a couple others and never could get the sound I wanted. Felt nice but I don't think that pickup is the best choice for that bass. I've never tried the Squier VM but have tried the newer Affinity Jaguar and those are nice for the price.
I have 3 limited production mustang pj's...a 2018 butterscotch, a 2020 buttercream, and a 2022 surf pearl...in my opinion, the butterscotch one is the best instrument overall, hope you like yours too
@@jasondorsey7110 I do like my Mustang. I put LaBella flats on it and think that gave it the identity it needed.
I really want a short/medium scale bass to mess around on, and I'm thinking about getting that TMB30, I haven't really heard any negative things about them.
@@jas1nFor the price, the TMB30 can't be beat in my opinion. After a few years the neck is stable and I still really like mine. I've thought about swapping pickups with the DiMarzio Relentless or the Sixies PJ set, but it sounds good without doing that.
Ibanez makes/markets solid instruments. This is no exception.

I adore my Jaguar SS and use it as my only bass guitar. It does everything I want beautifully. This is coming from a guy that had a top-of-the-line P-Bass. I think 30" should become the standard.
I have owned the short scale Sterling Stingray, Squier Jaguar, Ibanez TMB 30 and many others including a Dan Armstrong Plexiglass, Gibson SB 300 + SB 350 and EB-3, Marcus Miller, Schecter Banshee, G+L Fallout, Squier Modified Mustang, Epiphone EB-0, Paranormal Rascal and Newport. I modified many of them with various pickup configurations and different strings. I have thousands of videos posted on my channel here on TH-cam named Robert Charles Ellison.

For the money, the Ibanez TMB 30 is hard to beat. I bought 2 of them new and they were setup well and high quality. The recently reissued Epiphone Newport that I bought left a lot to be desired.
It might have been kinda slick if you demo out those bass for the video. I do have the Fender mustang it is a really funky little axe that no 🐂 jive 👶
Is the Sterling neck-heavy?
You guys are missing the G&L Fallout/ Fallout Tribute bass.
If Ibanez made a gig quality tmb30, I'd sell my mustang and current tmb.
Have you checked out the Sire U5?
Try to find one. They have been out of stock on Sire's website for quite sometime. I've checked around and nobody has any stock available for sale. At least the big stores like Sweetwater, Guitar Center, etc. That was the bass I had my eye on. Still do, but in the meantime, the TMB30 will have to do.
@@kelalamusic9258 I just picked one up on the Guitar Center site. In their used section. Got it for $483 shipped. Beautiful shape, like new. I think they had another one. Check Reverb also.
